A large number of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for meat quality and carcass traits has been reported in pigs over the past 20 years. However, few QTL have been validated and the biological meaning of the genes associated to these QTL has been underexploited. In this context, a meta-analysis was performed to compare the significant markers with meta-QTL previously reported in literature. Genome association studies were performed for 12 traits, from which 144 SNPs were found out to be significant (P < 0.05). They were validated in the meta-analysis and used to build the Association Weight Matrix, a matrix framework employed to investigate co-association of pairwise SNP across phenotypes enabling to derive a gene network. A total of 45 genes were selected from the Association Weight Matrix analysis, from which 25 significant transcription factors were identified and used to construct the networks associated to meat quality and carcass traits. These networks allowed the identification of key transcription factors, such as SOX5 and NKX2-5, gene-gene interactions (e.g. ATP5A1, JPH1, DPT and NEDD4) and pathways related to the regulation of adipose tissue metabolism and skeletal muscle development. Validated SNPs and knowledge of key genes driving these important industry traits might assist future strategies in pig breeding.

Impact of maternal protein supplementation during mid or late gestation on skeletal muscle energy metabolism of beef calves

Leticia Maria Pereira Sanglard, David Esteban Contreras Marquez, Walmir Silva, Marta Maria dos Santos, Thais Correia Costa, Dante Teixeira Valente, Mateus Pies Gionbelli, Nick Vergara Lopes Serao, Claudia Batista Sampaio, Marcio de Souza Duarte

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of maternal protein supplementation during mid or late gestation on energy metabolism of beef calves' skeletal muscle. The results indicated that lack of protein supplementation in pregnant cows alters the energy metabolism of their calves and leads to metabolic inflexibility.

Time-Domain Electromagnetic Characterization of Reaction Wheel for Space Applications

Marc Pous, Dongsheng Zhao, Marco A. Azpurua, Teodor Bozhanov, Ferran Silva, Johannes Wolf

Summary: The electromagnetic characterization of reaction wheels is essential for space science missions to meet the ac magnetic field cleanliness requirements and prevent interference on sensitive instrumentation. This article proposes a complete assessment, including measuring the magnetic flux vector under different operational modes and dynamic conditions, using a test setup based on multichannel acquisition and multidomain postprocessing. The focus of the measurement campaign was on the low-frequency range, and capturing the B-field in the time-domain enabled complementary analysis for understanding the reaction wheel's electromagnetic performance.

Genomic prediction in Brazilian Guzera cattle: application of a single-step approach to productive and reproductive traits

Eula Regina Carrara, Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz Peixoto, Alessandra Alves da Silva, Frank Angelo Tomita Bruneli, Henrique Torres Ventura, Lenira El Faro Zadra, Luiz Antonio Josahkian, Renata Veroneze, Paulo Savio Lopes

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of using single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) for genomic prediction of productive and reproductive traits in Guzera cattle. The results showed that ssGBLUP was feasible and could increase the accuracy of breeding values without significantly impacting predictive ability and bias. Although the number of genotyped animals and the size of the database were small for some traits, the individual accuracies of breeding values were evidently increased in the genomic evaluation.

Estimation of genetic parameters and inbreeding depression in Piau pig breed

Leticia Fernanda de Oliveira, Paulo Savio Lopes, Layla Cristien Cassia Miranda Dias, Leandro Magno Dornelas e Silva, Hugo Teixeira Silva, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes, Daniele Botelho Diniz Marques, Delvan Alves da Silva, Renata Veroneze

Summary: This study estimated genetic parameters, effective population size, inbreeding, and inbreeding depression in Piau pigs. The results showed low direct heritabilities for birth weight and weaning weight, while average pre-weaning daily weight gain showed moderate heritability. There were high genetic correlations between weight at birth and weight at weaning, as well as weight at weaning and average pre-weaning daily weight gain. Inbreeding increased over generations and led to a reduction in effective population size. Inbreeding had a significant effect on average pre-weaning daily weight gain, with a decrease of 0.005 g for every 1% increase in inbreeding coefficient. Increasing effective population size is necessary to control inbreeding and preserve genetic variability in the Piau pig population.

NASA POWER satellite meteorological system is a good tool for obtaining estimates of the temperature-humidity index under Brazilian conditions compared to INMET weather stations data

Eula Regina Carrara, Paulo Savio Lopes, Aricia Chaves Zanetti Reis, Jessica Xavier Silva, Layla Cristien de Cassia Miranda Dias, Erica Beatriz Schultz, Daniele Botelho Diniz Marques, Delvan Alves da Silva, Renata Veroneze, Ricardo Guimaraes Andrade, Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz Peixoto

Summary: Heat stress has negative effects on livestock production and reproduction. The study compared THI estimates from INMET weather stations and NASA POWER meteorological information sources, finding that NASA POWER satellite-based weather system is a suitable tool for obtaining accurate average and maximum THI values in Brazil, providing additional data for analyzing the impact of heat stress on livestock production.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pre-weaning nutrient supplementation on adipogenic determination in beef female calves. The results showed that early nutritional supplementation can enhance fat and muscle development and promote the conversion of adipogenic progenitor cells into adipocytes.

Genomic analysis of feed efficiency traits in beef cattle using random regression models

Pedro Vital Brasil Ramos, Gilberto Romeiro de Oliveira Menezes, Delvan Alves da Silva, Daniela Lourenco, Gustavo Garcia Santiago, Roberto A. A. Torres Junior, Fabyano Fonseca e Silva, Paulo Savio Lopes, Renata Veroneze

Summary: Feed efficiency is crucial for the profitability and sustainability of the beef cattle industry. This study proposed genomic evaluations for feed efficiency traits using random regression models. The models were compared based on goodness-of-fit and genetic parameter behavior. The findings provide evidence for new selection strategies in the beef cattle industry.

Assessment of runs of homozygosity, heterozygosity-rich regions and genomic inbreeding estimates in a subpopulation of Guzera (Bos indicus) dual-purpose cattle

E. R. Carrara, P. S. Lopes, R. Veroneze, R. J. Pereira, L. E. F. Zadra, M. G. C. D. Peixoto

Summary: This study quantified runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity-rich regions (HRR) in a subpopulation of Guzer & aacute; cattle and examined ROH and HRR islands. The results showed that the inbreeding coefficients determined by ROH were higher than other cattle breeds' and higher than pedigree-based inbreeding in the Guzer & aacute; breed obtained in previous studies. Additionally, genes identified in ROH and HRR islands were associated with dairy and beef traits, reproductive traits, and disease resistance.

Summary: The particle size of limestone in the diet of laying hens affects the apparent retention and digestibility coefficients of calcium. This study aimed to determine these coefficients for limestone of different particle sizes. The results showed that the coefficients increased linearly with increasing calcium concentrations in the diet, regardless of the particle size of limestone.
