A systematic review and meta-analysis of the probiotics and synbiotics effects on oxidative stress

We performed a comprehensive search of medical bibliographic databases to identify interventional studies reporting the effect of probiotics (or synbiotics) supplementation on biomarkers of oxidative stress. Twenty seven articles that included 1363 subjects (709 cases and 699 controls) were included to our analyses. Oxidative stress parameters levels, including total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (0.31 mmol/L, 95% CI: 0.13-0.50, P < 0.001), glutathione (GSH) (SMD: 0.44 mu mol/L, 95% CI: 0.26-0.62, P < 0.001), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (SMD: 0.48 U/mg, 95% CI: 0.16-0.81, P = 0.004) and nitric oxide (NO) (SMD: 0.57 mu mol/L, 95% CI: 0.19-0.94, P = 0.003) were higher in probiotics (or synbiotics) group compared to controls. Moreover, malondialdehyde (MDA) (SMD = -0.45 mu mol/L, 95%Cl = -0.63 to -0.26, P < 0.001) level was lower than controls. Probiotics and synbiotic supplementation improve antioxidant resistance and increase the amount of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of UDCA in treating neonates with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia undergoing phototherapy. The results showed that UDCA combined with phototherapy enhanced the decrease in total bilirubin level, but it did not decrease the duration of phototherapy and hospital stay from a clinical point of view.

Summary: Although the rates of incidence and death in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR) were relatively lower in 2017, the number of transport-related fatalities is increasing. There are significant differences in mortality rates among different countries, highlighting the urgent need for action.

Summary: Data sparsity is a major limitation for estimating dementia burden on a national and global level. This study developed an algorithm using validation samples from nationally representative surveys to predict dementia prevalence. By classifying dementia status based on cognition and function scores, the algorithm was able to accurately estimate dementia prevalence across different age and gender groups.

The criticism of bases and claims of post-structural geography

Summary: In contrast to structuralists, who aimed for a fixed framework of meanings, post-structuralists believed that knowledge is not constrained by fixed structures and meanings, but rather fluctuates and evolves through a continuous process of semantic dialectics. In the field of geography, meanings are produced in the communication between spaces, and there are no independent meanings and identities for geographical space and place alone. The authors of this article argue that post-structuralism is a non-scientific and non-epistemic viewpoint, and it has conceptual and epistemic contradictions.

Summary: This study included 5 RCTs and found that cinnamon supplementation significantly reduced insulin resistance scores in women with PCOS and may improve certain IR markers. Cinnamon is suggested to lower IR by promoting insulin action, stimulating insulin signaling pathways, and enhancing insulin sensitivity.
