We report here high rates of detection (50.8%, 31/61 pigs) of Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) in kidneys of slaughter-age, apparently healthy pigs on St. Kitts island, Lesser Antilles. TTSuV1 and TTSuVk2a were detected in 23 (37.7%) and 13 (21.3%) pigs, respectively, including mixed infection in five animals. By nucleotide sequence identities and phylogenetic analysis, significant genetic diversity was observed among both TTSuV1 and TTSuVk2a on St. Kitts, with TTSuVk2a showing higher genetic diversity than TTSuV1. Fourteen (45.2%) and 10 (32.2%) of the TTSuV infected pigs tested positive for porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and porcine parvovirus (PPV), respectively, revealing high rates of co-infection of TTSuV with PCV2 and PPV. This is the first report on detection and genetic diversity of TTSuV from the Lesser Antilles. Also, PCV2 and PPV were detected for the first time in the Lesser Antilles. Considering the impact of pig farming on the regional livestock economy, the increasing demand for local pork and lack of information on emerging and re-emerging porcine viruses in the Lesser Antilles, the present findings have important implications on swine health.

Meiji Soe Aung, Thida San, Noriko Urushibara, Nilar San, Myat Su Hlaing, Pan Ei Soe, Wut Hmone Win Htut, Ingin Moe, Win Lei Yi Mon, Zar Chi Nyein Chan, Nobumichi Kobayashi

Summary: The study revealed the prevalence and clonal diversity of MRSA/MSSA in children in Myanmar, with MRSA accounting for 19.7% of isolates and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes detected in 61.5% of all isolates. ST239 MRSA isolates exhibited the highest resistance rates to antimicrobials, and quinolone resistance was found in the dominant MRSA clones and some MSSA lineages.

Summary: This study identified novel penicillin binding protein (PBP) profiles and mutations associated with penicillin nonsusceptibility in nonencapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae (NESp). The results revealed that the PBP profiles 13-16-ne1 and 13-7-ne4, as well as PBP1a type-13 and-131, PBP2b type-7,-ne1, and-ne2 were closely associated with penicillin nonsusceptibility in NESp.

Molecular Epidemiological Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus argenteus Clinical Isolates from a National Tertiary Care Hospital in Myanmar: Co-Isolation of Multiple Clones and Identification of Novel Staphylocoagulase Genotype

Win Kalayar Kyaw, Meiji Soe Aung, Thida San, Win Win Maw, Khin Khin Mu, Win Lei Yee Mon, Mie Mie Than, Nilar San, Cho Cho Than, Noriko Urushibara, Nobumichi Kobayashi

Summary: A study conducted at Yangon General Hospital in Myanmar analyzed 226 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus/Staphylococcus argenteus to investigate antimicrobial resistance and genetic features. It was found that methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) accounted for 19% of the isolates, with mostly SCCmec type IV or V. The detection rate of Panton-Valentine leukocidin genes was higher in methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (39%) than in MRSA (22%).

Antimicrobial Resistance, Virulence Factors, and Genotypes of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium Clinical Isolates in Northern Japan: Identification of optrA in ST480 E. faecalis

Meiji Soe Aung, Noriko Urushibara, Mitsuyo Kawaguchiya, Nobuhide Ohashi, Mina Hirose, Kenji Kudo, Naoyuki Tsukamoto, Masahiko Ito, Nobumichi Kobayashi

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of virulence factors, drug resistance and its genetic determinants, and clonal lineages of E. faecalis and E. faecium clinical isolates in northern Japan. The results showed that E. faecalis isolates had a higher prevalence of virulence factors promoting bacterial colonization compared to E. faecium. There were evident differences in resistance to certain antibiotics and its determinants between the two species. Additionally, the first identification of optrA gene in ST480 E. faecalis in Japan was reported.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 100 cases of positive blood cultures for Staphylococcus aureus, and the Xpert MRSA/SA BC assay was used to detect MRSA and MSSA. The results showed that this assay accurately identified MRSA and MSSA, but over half of the MSSA isolates showed positive results for the orfX-associated region, which may cause confusion in the identification of MRSA.
