PCV3 is an emerging swine virus associated with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), reproductive failure, respiratory diseases and systematic inflammation. Although first identified in 2015, the earliest case has been traced back to 2009 in the United States. In China, PCV3 infection was first detected in 2015, but little information has been available about its occurrence and prevalence there before 2015. In this study, 200 porcine clinical samples collected from 20 provinces, five autonomous regions and four municipalities between 1990 and 1999 were analysed for PCV3 infection by PCR. Results showed that 6.5% of the porcine samples collected from eight provinces and one autonomous region were PCV3 positive, with the earliest cases occurring in 1996. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that PCV3 strains obtained in this study shared 96.6%-99.7% and 97.1%-99.4% sequence identity at the ORF2 gene and genome levels with all available reference strains from China and other countries, indicating the high genetic stability of PCV3 over the past 20years.

Summary: This study reported the first successful isolation of a porcine astrovirus 5 (PAstV5) strain, as well as the coinfection mechanism of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and PAstV5 with CSFV, which significantly enhanced the replication of PAstV5 by suppressing interferon response.

Summary: Pigs are a major meat source worldwide and a pillar of Chinese animal husbandry. A comprehensive study has been conducted to delineate the pig virome, establishing a viromic baseline for disease prevention and control. The viromic strategy developed in this study has the potential to revolutionize surveillance measures for pathogenic viruses in animal species.

Mammalian birnaviruses identified in pigs infected by classical swine fever virus

Zhe Yang, Biao He, Zongji Lu, Shijiang Mi, Jianfeng Jiang, Zhongdi Liu, Changchun Tu, Wenjie Gong

Summary: A novel porcine virus, porcine birnavirus (PBRV), was unexpectedly identified from classical swine fever virus-infected pigs by viral metagenomic analysis. PBRV strains were found in diseased pigs from nine provinces/autonomous regions in China spanning 21 years, showing replication in the pigs. Genome-based sequence comparison revealed genetic distance from existing members within the Birnaviridae family, with PBRVs forming an independent genotype separated from other genera. Phylogenetic analysis suggested the classification of PBRVs into two or three subgenotypes (PBRV-A1-2 and PBRV-B1-3) based on nucleotide sequences.

Summary: This study conducted a transcriptomic analysis of game animals in China and identified numerous potentially high-risk viruses for humans and domestic animals. Civets were found to carry the highest number of these high-risk viruses. The study also revealed the transmission pathways of coronaviruses between different species.

Summary: This article mainly introduces the taxonomy, geographic distribution, and unique traits of bats as virus reservoirs, as well as the origin, intermediate hosts, and interspecies transmission mechanisms of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and other viruses associated with bats. The molecular interactions between viral surface proteins and host cell receptors are also studied, comparing these interactions in humans, intermediate hosts, and bats.

Divergent Viruses Discovered in Swine Alter the Understanding of Evolutionary History and Genetic Diversity of the Respirovirus Genus and Related Porcine Parainfluenza Viruses

Jin Zhao, Jiumeng Sun, Xinxin Li, Gang Xing, Yifang Zhang, Alexander Lai, Guy Baele, Xiang Ji, Shuo Su

Summary: Paramyxoviridae is a rapidly growing family of viruses, and it is difficult to predict the harm of newly emerging viruses to humans and animals. By analyzing the genomes of porcine parainfluenza virus (PPIV), a new species named PPIV-2 was discovered, and a revision of the species classification criteria for the Respirovirus genus was proposed. Recombination events and high genetic diversity were found in PPIV-1, indicating the importance of recombination in the diversity of the Respirovirus genus.
