We have fabricated a racetrack-shaped spliceless double-pancake test coil with GdBCO coated conductors and investigated its performance in air and magnetic cores. We have been developing a high-temperature superconductor induction/synchronous machine (HTS-ISM) for electric vehicles. To improve the specific power and torque density of the fully superconducting HTS-ISM, an increase in the current capacity of the HTS stator windings is crucial. The fabricated test coil was wound with two GdBCO conductors in parallel, which were transposed at a coil end. Thus, the self-inductances of the two conductors were equal, and the coil was free from splice resistances due to transposition. We confirmed the soundness of the transposition method by critical current measurements. We also investigated the critical currents of the test coil by placing it in a magnetic core and observed a decrease in the critical current compared with that in the air core. This is caused by the increase in the component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the coated conductors. To overcome this issue, magnetic materials were used for magnetic-field correction. We methodically compared the results of the critical current measurements and evaluated the results by numerical magnetic-field analyses.

Splice joint resistances of commercial REBCO-coated conductors and their reduction

Mitsuho Furuse, Shuichiro Fuchino, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Yasuhiro Iijima

Summary: The applications of high-Tc superconducting magnets are actively developed worldwide, requiring low resistance and convenient joint technologies for REBCO-coated conductors to reduce heat loads of cryocoolers and improve energy efficiency. Joint resistances of commercial REBCO-coated conductors were evaluated, with improvements in electrical connectivity showing potential for significant reduction in resistances. Demonstrations of quasi-persistent operation of REBCO-coated conductors with soldered joints in a conduction-cooled high-Tc superconducting magnet were successful, with induced current decay dependent on joint resistance.

Summary: This paper reports the fabrication and test results of a high temperature superconducting magnet used for an aluminum billet heater in aluminum extrusion processing. The magnet combines HTS coils with iron cores to generate a stable magnetic field of 1T in the working region. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the magnet's design and force balance.

Summary: This study investigated the deposition of Ag-doped REBCO films using the hot-wall pulsed laser deposition method on Hastelloy tapes and evaluated the joint resistances of lap or bridge joints made by soldering. The results showed that the joint resistances were low and a double layer structure with a thin Ag-doped REBCO film on a high-Ic REBCO film exhibited good joint performance.
