The effect of methylamine vapor on luminescence of Eu(III) tris-benzoylacetonate (I) immobilized in thin-layer chromatography plates has been investigated. It has been revealed that interaction of I with analyte vapor results in increase of the intensity of Eu(III) luminescence. The mechanism of the effect of methylamine vapors on intensification of the Eu(III) luminescence has been suggested using the data of IR spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. The mechanism of luminescence sensitization consists in bonding of an analyte molecule with a water molecule into the coordination sphere of Eu(III). As a result, the bond of a water molecule with the luminescence centre weakens, rigid structural fragment including europium ion, water and methylamine molecules forms. The presence of such fragment must naturally promote decrease of influence of OH-vibrations on luminescence of the complex I. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermoluminescent Tb(III) and Dy(III) complexes with redox-active ligands: experimental and theoretical study

Tatyana B. Emelina, Anatolii G. Mirochnik

Summary: Thermoluminescent materials and persistent luminescent materials with delayed emission have been widely studied for their potential in optical information storage. In this study, the thermoluminescence mechanism of ternary Ln(NO3)(2)Acac(Phen)(2) complexes (where Ln represents Tb(III), Dy(III), or Eu(III)) was investigated through experimental and theoretical methods. The results showed that the terbium and dysprosium complexes exhibited thermoluminescence properties, while the europium complex did not. The study proposed that the phenanthroline molecules in these complexes act as "chemical" electron traps, allowing for the freezing and storage of the excited state of the complexes. These thermoluminescent materials with "chemical" traps have great potential in optical information storage and anticounterfeiting applications.

Self-Absorption Effect in Polymer Films Doped with Difluoroboron β-Diketonates

A. A. Khrebtov, E. V. Fedorenko, V. A. Reutov, A. G. Mirochnik, L. A. Lim

Summary: The spectral properties of difluoroboron beta-diketonates in a polystyrene matrix were investigated. A bathochromic shift of the fluorescence bands was observed in the steady-state luminescence spectra during the transition from solutions to polymer films, which is attributed to dye self-absorption. It was demonstrated that using a mask to excite a small portion of the film is a simple and convenient method to prevent the effect of dye self-absorption on the fluorescence spectrum structure.

Mechanism of Luminescent Chemosensor Response in Europium Chelates

N. Petrochenkova, T. B. Emelina, A. G. Mirochnik

Summary: This study investigated the chemosensor properties of Eu(III) carboxylatodibenzoylmethanates as applied to ammonia vapors. The experimental results showed that the luminescence intensity of Eu(III) increased linearly with increasing analyte concentration in the range of 3-300 ppm. The study demonstrated that the luminescent response was reversible and the ammonia detection limit was 3 ppm. Quantum-chemical modeling revealed that the optical effect mechanism involved the formation of a rigid H2O-NH3 structural fragment, which eliminated the quenching effect of high-frequency OH vibrations. The proposed chemosensors exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity, suggesting their potential use in food safety control and environmental monitoring for ammonia sensing applications.

Techno-economic assessment of waste mandarin biochar as a green adsorbent for binary dye wastewater effluents of methylene blue and basic fuchsin: Lab- and large-scale investigations

Ahmed S. El-Shafie, Evana Rahman, Yasser Gadelhak, Rehab Mahmoud, Marwa El-Azary

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Non-invasive analysis of reference glass and historical mosaic tesserae by means of reflectance infrared spectroscopy

Maria Cristina Caggiani, Germana Barone, Paolo Mazzoleni

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
