Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) are important parameters for patient assessment. However, current measurement techniques require attachment of sensors to the patient's body, often leading to discomfort, stress and even pain. A new algorithm is presented for monitoring both HR and RR using thermal imaging. The cyclical ejection of blood flow from the heart to the head (through carotid arteries and thoracic aorta) leads to periodic movements of the head; these vertical movements are used to assess HR. Respiratory rate is estimated by using temperature fluctuations under the nose during the respiratory cycle. To test the viability and feasibility of this approach, a pilot study was conducted with 20 healthy subjects (aged 18-36 and 1 aged 50 years). The study consisted of two phases: phase A (frontal view acquisitions) and phase B (side view acquisitions). To validate the results, photoplethysmography and thoracic effort (piezoplethysmography) were simultaneously recorded. High agreement between infrared thermography and ground truth/gold standard was achieved. For HR, the root-mean-square errors (RMSE) for phases A and B were 3.53 +/- 1.53 and 3.43 +/- 1.61 beats per minute, respectively. For RR, the RMSE between thermal imaging and piezoplethysmography stayed around 0.71 +/- 0.30 breaths per minute (phase A). This study demonstrates that infrared thermography may be a promising, clinically relevant alternative for the assessment of HR and RR.

Investigation of Three Potential Stress Inducement Tasks During On-Road Driving

Marcel Mathissen, Nikica Hennes, Fabian Faller, Steffen Leonhardt, Daniel Teichmann

Summary: The study successfully induced stress using the n-back task with high inter-individual variation on a group level. Performing the n-back task simultaneously with a tactile detection response task doubled average response times. Stress-inducing secondary tasks led to sympathetic nervous activation, resulting in increased heart rate, respiration rate, and decreased heart rate variability.

Composite performance of variable stiffness actuator for exoskeleton administrated via impedance control and disturbance observer

Lin Liu, Steffen Leonhardt, Lukas Bergmann, Berno J. E. Misgeld

Summary: This paper presents an integration of reducing the output impedance and the vibration at the trajectory tracking into one variable stiffness actuator (VSA) system. The VSA operates within the cascade impedance control framework with the unknown input observer (UIO) in the inner torque control loop. By utilizing gain-scheduled UIO and the low and high physical stiffness of VSA, the paper achieves low-output impedance and steady trajectory tracking.

Summary: This study investigates the application of a conditional generative adversarial network to augment limited neonatal image datasets by using edge detection frames from neonates to generate RGB images. The quality of the generated RGB images was evaluated using a multistage survey and the FID score. The promising results indicate the potential of conditional generative adversarial networks for training and application in neonatal care.

The D-Bar Algorithm Fusing Electrical Impedance Tomography with A Priori Radar Data: A Hands-On Analysis

Summary: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is limited in spatial resolution due to sensitivity to noise. We investigate a technique to improve EIT reconstructions by incorporating a priori information into the D-Bar algorithm. Our paper aims to explain the behavior and implementation of the D-Bar algorithm, as well as the effect of adding prior information from a radar setup. We analyze different parameters of the reconstruction algorithm using GREIT figures of merit and find that even limited prior information can significantly improve reconstruction quality.

Summary: With the increasing level of automation in vehicles, it is crucial to have robust driver monitoring systems to ensure driver intervention at any time. A portable cushion with multiple sensors is presented in this paper to monitor the heart and respiratory rates of a vehicle driver. The initial study with twenty participants in a driving simulator showed promising results in accurately measuring heart and respiratory rates, as well as the potential for monitoring changes in the electrocardiogram. These measurements can be used to detect drowsiness, stress, and predict cardiovascular diseases.

Evaluation of Different Contrast Agents for Regional Lung Perfusion Measurement Using Electrical Impedance Tomography: An Experimental Pilot Study

Thomas Muders, Benjamin Hentze, Steffen Leonhardt, Christian Putensen

Summary: Monitoring regional blood flow distribution in the lungs is useful for optimizing ventilation therapy. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) can measure regional lung perfusion using different contrast agents. The study evaluated the suitability of five clinically approved solutions as EIT contrast agents. NaCl 5.85% and sodium-bicarbonate 8.4% showed the best results, while Iomeprol and Glucose 5% also produced usable signals. Isotonic balanced crystalloid solution was not effective. Further research is needed to determine optimal doses and balance reliability with potential side effects.
