Waste management regulation is generally impacted by Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation, such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The main goal of this article is to explicit the WEEE chain and flows using the material flow analysis (MFA) method and to contribute to the understanding of the EPR implementation in a specific case study by examining operational activities of WEEE regional and urban flows. A detailed case study of the EPR implementation for WEEE in the Midi-Pyrenees Region and the Toulouse's urban area was conducted. Based on a MFA of the WEEE chain, results give an insight into operational activities dealing with circulation of waste material. It reveals the main dysfunctions of this WEEE management system, including lack of involvement of local authorities and consumers, dispersion channels and a low recycling rate at the local level. The roles of recycling operators, social economy companies and EPR compliance are also important to recover more resources from waste and to close the recycling loop.

Characteristics of industrial hazardous waste generation in South Korea from 2008 to 2018 based on decoupling and decomposition analysis

Daye Lee, Junbeum Kim, Hung-Suck Park

Summary: This study analysed the generation characteristics of industrial hazardous waste in South Korea from 2008 to 2018 and found that factors such as industrial output and characteristics of hazardous waste generation-to-energy are major driving factors influencing the increase of industrial hazardous waste generation. Meanwhile, industrial structure and energy efficiency affect the decrease of industrial hazardous waste generation in most industries. It was also confirmed that different industries have varying driving factors affecting industrial hazardous waste generation. These results provide insights for the South Korean government to improve and customize hazardous waste management policies.

The stock-service productivity of the European road transport infrastructure

Thi Cuc Nguyen, Alessio Miatto, Tomer Fishman, Junbeum Kim

Summary: An efficient transport infrastructure is crucial for connecting markets and people, and it has a positive impact on economic activity, development, and growth. However, little research has been conducted on the interaction between the material resources of in-use stocks of transport infrastructure and their service provision. This study quantifies the mass of materials in the European transport sector and analyzes the interactions between in-use stocks and service provision, contributing to a better understanding of the relationship between resource use and provided services.

Drivers of urban metabolism: Toward a framework for urban transformations

Anastasia Papangelou, Jean-Baptiste Bahers, Lynda Aissani

Summary: This study presents a framework that systematically identifies the drivers of urban metabolism and critically engages with them for the development of transformative future visions. The framework categorizes the drivers into seven thematic categories (demographic, economic, cultural, political, technological, environmental, and infrastructural) and includes an eighth category (power) to examine the interactions between drivers, activities, and flows in the city. Applying this framework to a case study of biowaste management in Rennes, France, revealed its usefulness in identifying overlooked drivers. This proposed framework can become a useful tool for solution-oriented urban metabolism research.

Unveiling the economic and environmental impact of policies to promote animal feed for a circular food system

Alessandro Gatto, Marijke Kuiper, Corina van Middelaar, Hans van Meijl

Summary: This study examines the economic and environmental effects of transitioning towards more circular food systems in the European Union (EU27) by feeding animals with low-opportunity-cost feed and better utilizing local feed resources. The results show that providing subsidies for circularity and promoting the use of low-cost feed can increase animal production, but also have negative impacts on land use and emissions. On the other hand, promoting domestic feed sourcing through import tariffs can decrease animal production and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. However, complementary policies are needed to mitigate drawbacks and enhance benefits of a more circular agri-food system.
