Hormonal alterations in Eating Disorders (ED) may result from the biochemical stress of malnutrition/starvation. The correlations between some hormonal impairments, particularly of the somatotropic axis, and the psychopathological aspects of ED are still undefined. We measured the plasma concentrations of the somatotropic hormone (GH) and the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in 136 patients with various forms of ED, 65 with restricted Anorexia Nervosa (ANR), 19 with bingeing-purging Anorexia Nervosa (ANBP), 12 with purging-non hinging Anorexia Nervosa (ANP), 26 with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), 8 with ED not otherwise specified-anorexic type (EDNOS-AN), 7 with ED not otherwise specified-bulimic type (EDNOS-BN) and in 30 healthy controls. Psychological assessment of patients and controls was performed using two outpatient rating scales, the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). Significant negative or positive correlations were observed between GH-IGF-1 concentrations and impairments on several EDI-2 subscales (drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, interoceptive awareness, sense of ineffectiveness, interpersonal distrust, maturity fear) and on SCL-90 subitems (depression, hostility, obsessivity compulsivity, anxiety), suggesting a possible hormonal modulatory effect on specific aspects of ED psychopathology.

Kane, Peter Yellowlees, Taishiro Kishimoto

Summary: This study investigated the telepsychiatry regulations in different countries/regions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that most regions relaxed their regulations on telepsychiatry during the pandemic, allowing for greater use and implementation of telepsychiatric care. These findings provide valuable information for future policy and regulatory decisions.

Summary: By analyzing the language network of euthymic bipolar patients, researchers found altered asymmetry in the language hubs, suggesting a link to the origin of psychosis. Moreover, the study revealed significant correlations between the low-frequency fluctuation index of the language network and residual manic symptoms as well as depression scores.

Volume and complexity of the thalamus in Anorexia Nervosa: An exploratory evaluation

Enrico Collantoni, Valentina Meregalli, Renzo Manara, Paolo Meneguzzo, Elena Tenconi, Angela Favaro

Summary: This study explores thalamic structure in different phases of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and finds that patients with acute AN have reduced thalamic volume and complexity, while patients who have fully recovered from AN show alterations only at the level of specific nuclei. These findings suggest that patients with AN have widespread reductions in thalamic volume and complexity in the acute phase, but these alterations almost completely normalize following weight restoration, indicating the involvement of malnutrition-related mechanisms.

Food induced distractibility in restrictive anorexia nervosa: Different motor patterns for different foods as revealed by a mouse tracker evaluation.

Valentina Meregalli, Ettore Ambrosini, Elena Tenconi, Philipp A. Schroeder, Valentina Cardi, Angela Veronese, Paolo Meneguzzo, Angela Favaro, Enrico Collantoni

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of task-irrelevant food distractors on the motor actions of patients with restrictive Anorexia Nervosa (AN-R) compared to healthy controls (HC). The findings revealed that AN-R patients showed an increased deviation towards low-calorie foods and a reduced deviation towards high-calorie foods compared to neutral objects, indicating an implicit mechanism sustaining calorie restriction in AN-R patients.

Virtual Rejection and Overinclusion in Eating Disorders: An Experimental Investigation of the Impact on Emotions, Stress Perception, and Food Attitudes

Paolo Meneguzzo, Valentina Meregalli, Enrico Collantoni, Valentina Cardi, Elena Tenconi, Angela Favaro

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of virtual social inclusion or ostracism on eating psychopathology, emotions, perceived stress, and the drive to binge or restrict in patients across the eating disorder spectrum. Different reactions in cognitive and emotional states of patients with eating disorders after different interpersonal scenarios confirm the impact of inclusive or exclusive relationships on eating psychopathology.

Belief Inflexibility and Cognitive Biases in Anorexia Nervosa-The Role of the Bias against Disconfirmatory Evidence and Its Clinical and Neuropsychological Correlates

Elena Tenconi, Valentina Meregalli, Adriana Buffa, Enrico Collantoni, Roberto Cavallaro, Paolo Meneguzzo, Angela Favaro

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) to question their initial impressions and integrate new information. The study found that AN patients were more likely to disconfirm their previous judgments compared to healthy individuals, particularly those with a binge-eating/purging subtype. Abstract thinking skills and cognitive flexibility were positively correlated with cognitive bias in both patients and controls. This research is important for understanding the complexity of AN.

Easy to get, difficult to avoid: Behavioral tendencies toward high-calorie and low-calorie food during a mobile approach-avoidance task interact with body mass index and hunger in a community sample

Enrico Collantoni, Valentina Meregalli, Umberto Granziol, Cristiano Gerunda, Hilmar Zech, Philipp A. Schroeder, Elena Tenconi, Valentina Cardi, Paolo Meneguzzo, Matteo Martini, Enrica Marzola, Giovanni Abbate-Daga, Angela Favaro

Summary: In recent years, studies have highlighted the importance of assessing behavioral tendencies towards different food stimuli, but inconsistencies due to heterogeneities in experimental approaches and small sample sizes exist in this field. This study used a mobile approach-avoidance task to investigate behavioral tendencies towards healthy and unhealthy foods, compared to neutral objects, in a large community sample. The results showed an approach tendency towards food stimuli in the general population, with decreasing tendencies towards healthy foods as BMI increased and increasing tendencies towards healthy foods with perceived hunger.

Summary: Preliminary data suggest that bone mineral density (BMD) is lower in transgender adults before initiating gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) compared to cisgender controls. This study examines bone metabolism in transgender adults before GAHT, along with its correlation to biochemical profile, body composition, and lifestyle habits.

Intra-individual cortical networks in Anorexia Nervosa: Evidence from a longitudinal dataset

Enrico Collantoni, Francesco Alberti, Brigitte Dahmen, Georg von Polier, Kerstin Konrad, Beate Herpertz-Dahlmann, Angela Favaro, Jochen Seitz

Summary: This study investigated the cortical thickness and gyrification patterns in patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) before and after short-term weight restoration using graph theory analysis. The results showed that patients with acute AN exhibited less organized cortical thickness networks compared to healthy controls, but these networks partially recovered after weight gain. The baseline gyrification networks in patients also showed reduced global efficiency and small-worldness compared to healthy controls. Associations were found between local clustering of cortical thickness and BMI-SDS, as well as clustering/global efficiency of gyrification networks and duration of illness.

Summary: This study aimed to assess barriers and facilitators in accessing specialist care for eating disorders (EDs). The study found that most patients did not directly access specialist care, but sought treatment through mental health professionals and general practitioners. The involvement of multiple health professionals in seeking help, seeking treatment for general psychiatric symptoms, and lack of family support were associated with delayed access to ED units.
