Summary: Alterations in the gut microbiome and immune system may play a role in maintaining and exacerbating eating behavior dysregulation in disorders like anorexia and bulimia, and could potentially serve as biomarkers for increased risk of developing these eating disorders. Research focuses on studying gut dysbiosis, peripheral inflammation, and neuroinflammation in each disorder, as well as exploring data from preclinical rodent models to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying eating disorders. This knowledge is crucial for developing novel and effective treatments for these often difficult-to-treat eating disorders.

Summary: This study investigates the potential triggers for eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Using real-world data from the WHO safety database, the study finds a correlation between certain drugs such as isotretinoin, lamivudine, nevirapine, and zidovudine, and the development or relapse of AN and BN. It suggests that mental health conditions should be assessed before treatment initiation to identify patients at risk.

Summary: From the literature review, it can be concluded that orthorexia nervosa is closely related to trait and disordered restrictive eating symptoms of anorexia nervosa, as well as weight control motivations for food choice. However, it is less consistently related to binge-spectrum eating disorder symptoms, emotional eating, uncontrolled eating, or body dissatisfaction/shape and weight concerns.

Summary: The study reviewed the literature on the relationship between orthorexia nervosa (ON) and eating disorder (ED) symptoms. The results indicated that ON is consistently related to trait and disordered restrictive eating symptoms of anorexia nervosa, as well as weight control motivations for food choice. However, ON was less consistently related to binge-spectrum eating disorder symptoms, emotional eating, uncontrolled eating, or body dissatisfaction/shape and weight concerns.

Summary: This study found high rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders in 9-10 year old children with eating disorders, particularly anxiety, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and mood disorders. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of eating disorders in this age group and the associated severe comorbidity, considering referrals for specialty mental health care.

Summary: Eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have shown increasing trends in incidence and burden from 1990 to 2019 in China. The prevalence of AN peaked at 15-19 years old, while the prevalence and DALYs of BN peaked at 30-34 years old. Females had a higher burden of AN, while males had a higher burden of BN.

Summary: This study investigated the telepsychiatry regulations in different countries/regions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that most regions relaxed their regulations on telepsychiatry during the pandemic, allowing for greater use and implementation of telepsychiatric care. These findings provide valuable information for future policy and regulatory decisions.

Summary: This study explores thalamic structure in different phases of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and finds that patients with acute AN have reduced thalamic volume and complexity, while patients who have fully recovered from AN show alterations only at the level of specific nuclei. These findings suggest that patients with AN have widespread reductions in thalamic volume and complexity in the acute phase, but these alterations almost completely normalize following weight restoration, indicating the involvement of malnutrition-related mechanisms.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of task-irrelevant food distractors on the motor actions of patients with restrictive Anorexia Nervosa (AN-R) compared to healthy controls (HC). The findings revealed that AN-R patients showed an increased deviation towards low-calorie foods and a reduced deviation towards high-calorie foods compared to neutral objects, indicating an implicit mechanism sustaining calorie restriction in AN-R patients.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of virtual social inclusion or ostracism on eating psychopathology, emotions, perceived stress, and the drive to binge or restrict in patients across the eating disorder spectrum. Different reactions in cognitive and emotional states of patients with eating disorders after different interpersonal scenarios confirm the impact of inclusive or exclusive relationships on eating psychopathology.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) to question their initial impressions and integrate new information. The study found that AN patients were more likely to disconfirm their previous judgments compared to healthy individuals, particularly those with a binge-eating/purging subtype. Abstract thinking skills and cognitive flexibility were positively correlated with cognitive bias in both patients and controls. This research is important for understanding the complexity of AN.

Summary: In recent years, studies have highlighted the importance of assessing behavioral tendencies towards different food stimuli, but inconsistencies due to heterogeneities in experimental approaches and small sample sizes exist in this field. This study used a mobile approach-avoidance task to investigate behavioral tendencies towards healthy and unhealthy foods, compared to neutral objects, in a large community sample. The results showed an approach tendency towards food stimuli in the general population, with decreasing tendencies towards healthy foods as BMI increased and increasing tendencies towards healthy foods with perceived hunger.

Summary: This study investigated the cortical thickness and gyrification patterns in patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) before and after short-term weight restoration using graph theory analysis. The results showed that patients with acute AN exhibited less organized cortical thickness networks compared to healthy controls, but these networks partially recovered after weight gain. The baseline gyrification networks in patients also showed reduced global efficiency and small-worldness compared to healthy controls. Associations were found between local clustering of cortical thickness and BMI-SDS, as well as clustering/global efficiency of gyrification networks and duration of illness.

Summary: This study aimed to assess barriers and facilitators in accessing specialist care for eating disorders (EDs). The study found that most patients did not directly access specialist care, but sought treatment through mental health professionals and general practitioners. The involvement of multiple health professionals in seeking help, seeking treatment for general psychiatric symptoms, and lack of family support were associated with delayed access to ED units.
