Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common disease affecting younger people and may lead to vision loss. CSC shares phenotypic overlap with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As recent studies have revealed a characteristic increase of choroidal thickness in CSC, we conducted a genome-wide association study on choroidal thickness in 3,418 individuals followed by TaqMan assays in 2,692 subjects, and we identified two susceptibility loci: CFH rs800292, an established AMD susceptibility polymorphism, and VIPR2 rs3793217 (P = 2.05 x 10(-10) and 6.75 x 10(-8), respectively). Case-control studies using patients with CSC confirmed associations between both polymorphisms and CSC (P = 5.27 x 10(-5) and 5.14 x 10(-5), respectively). The CFH rs800292 G allele is reportedly a risk allele for AMD, whereas the A allele conferred risk for thicker choroid and CSC development. This study not only shows that susceptibility genes for CSC could be discovered using choroidal thickness as a defining variable but also, deepens the understanding of differences between CSC and AMD pathophysiology.

Relationship between visual acuity and visual field and its reproducibility in patients with retinitis pigmentosa

Ryo Asaoka, Manabu Miyata, Akio Oishi, Yuri Fujino, Hiroshi Murata, Keiko Azuma, Ryo Obata, Tatsuya Inoue

Summary: This study investigated the association between visual acuity and visual field in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The results showed that the association between visual sensitivity and visual acuity was strongest at the fovea and decreased towards the peripheral region. Additionally, as visual acuity decreased, the reproducibility of the visual field tests increased.

Remote Perimetry in a Virtual Reality Metaverse Environment for Out-of-Hospital Functional Eye Screening Compared Against the Gold Standard Humphrey Visual Fields Perimeter: Proof-of-Concept Pilot Study

Kang-An Wong, Bryan Chin Hou Ang, Dinesh Visva Gunasekeran, Rahat Husain, Joewee Boon, Krishna Vikneson, Zyna Pei Qi Tan, Gavin Siew Wei Tan, Tien Yin Wong, Rupesh Agrawal

Summary: This study investigates the performance of a novel remote perimetry application designed in a virtual reality metaverse environment to enable functional testing in community-based and primary care settings. The results show that the remote perimetry application has good concordance with the gold standard perimetry and could potentially be used for functional eye screening in out-of-hospital settings.

Novel Manifestation of Retinal Hemangioblastomas Detected by OCT Angiography in von Hippel-Lindau Disease

Ayako Takahashi, Yuki Muraoka, Sho Koyasu, Yoshiki Arakawa, Eijiro Nakamura, Akitaka Tsujikawa

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of atypical retinal vascular proliferation in patients with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease using OCT angiography (OCTA). Among 57 patients with VHL disease, 12.1% showed atypical flat retinal hemangioblastomas (RHs). These flat RHs appeared as retinal hemorrhages or faint abnormal retinal vessels and displayed abundant blood flow in the lesions on OCTA. During a mean follow-up period of 20.4 months, no significant changes or complications were observed in flat RHs.

Delving into gene-set multiplex networks facilitated by a k-nearest neighbor-based measure of similarity

Cheng Zheng, Man Wang, Ryo Yamada, Daigo Okada

Summary: In this study, a modified association function was used to detect similarities among gene sets, and multiplex networks of gene sets were constructed for the first time. It was found that these context-based multiplex networks differed significantly from knowledge-based networks. Furthermore, the structural coefficients of gene sets provided insights into their diversity and facilitated the selection of specific gene sets.
