Summary: New technologies, market-based solutions, and regulation have not been effective in addressing today's human-caused ecological crises, suggesting the need for fundamental changes in detrimental social practices. Social innovation could be one approach for change, but a comprehensive understanding of research on social innovation in relation to ecological challenges is currently lacking. Moving towards strong sustainability in social innovation research could help to unlock more of its potential in addressing our current ecological crises.

Summary: Non-market valuation (NMV) is an effective method to understand the value people place on ecosystem goods and services without market prices. Despite conceptual and methodological limitations, NMV has been increasingly applied to Indigenous contexts in the past 20 years. A global systematic literature review and meta-synthesis of 63 peer-reviewed studies on NMV applied to Indigenous peoples' values reveal important knowledge gaps in non-market valuation for other geographic areas.
