Leaf water relations in epiphytic ferns are driven by drought avoidance rather than tolerance mechanisms

Courtney E. Campany, Jarmila Pittermann, Alex Baer, Helen Holmlund, Eric Schuettpelz, Klaus Mehltreter, James E. Watkins

Summary: The study surveyed 39 fern species in Costa Rican tropical forests to explore epiphytic trait divergence, finding that epiphytic ferns exhibit water conservation traits. Both epiphytic and hemi-epiphytic ferns have adaptations for water stress avoidance through anatomical and structural traits in response to the canopy habitat pressures.

Synergistic adaptations: freezing tolerance is associated with desiccation tolerance and activation of violaxanthin de-epoxidase in wintergreen ferns

Helen Holmlund

Summary: The study reveals that three desiccation-tolerant fern species are also tolerant to freezing at -7 degrees C, identifying traits that may confer both freezing tolerance and desiccation tolerance in these plants. The authors discovered freezing-induced activation of violaxanthin de-epoxidase in desiccation-tolerant ferns in the absence of light, providing further evidence for overlap between desiccation tolerance and freezing tolerance in the plant kingdom.

Chemical Cues from Entomopathogenic Nematodes Vary Across Three Species with Different Foraging Strategies, Triggering Different Behavioral Responses in Prey and Competitors

John M. Grunseich, Natalie M. Aguirre, Morgan N. Thompson, Jared G. Ali, Anjel M. Helms

Summary: Chemical cues play crucial roles in predator-prey interactions. Different predator species with varied hunting strategies can elicit distinct responses in prey organisms, indicating potential for future research on chemical communication between predators and prey. Further studies are needed to investigate the interactions among belowground organisms, which have received relatively little attention in the past.

Foliar water uptake via cork warts in mangroves of the Sonneratia genus

Callum Bryant, Tomas Fuenzalida, Alonso Zavafer, Hoa T. Nguyen, Nigel Brothers, Rosalie J. Harris, Holly A. A. Beckett, Helen Holmlund, Oliver Binks, Marilyn C. Ball

Summary: A novel foliar water uptake pathway was characterized in Sonneratia species, with slow and steady rates of water uptake over a 12-hour period. Leaf conductance to surface water (K-surf) increased with longer leaf wetting durations and more negative leaf water potentials at the start of wetting, but declined by 68% between wet and dry seasons. Results suggest that foliar water uptake via cork warts may be rate limited and regulated in Sonneratia sp.

A Beneficial Plant-Associated Fungus Shifts the Balance toward Plant Growth over Resistance, Increasing Cucumber Tolerance to Root Herbivory

Loren J. Rivera-Vega, John M. Grunseich, Natalie M. Aguirre, Cesar U. Valencia, Gregory A. Sword, Anjel M. Helms

Summary: Plants allocate resources dynamically and plant-associated microbes play an important role in influencing this allocation. In this study, a beneficial fungus, P. inflatum, was found to significantly enhance cucumber plant growth and reproductive potential, but did not improve resistance to cucumber beetles. However, inoculated plants showed increased tolerance to root herbivory.

A reduced role for water transport during the Cenozoic evolution of epiphytic Eupolypod ferns

Jarmila Pittermann, Alex Baer, Courtney Campany, Steven Jansen, Helen Holmlund, Eric Schuettpelz, Klaus Mehltreter, James E. E. Watkins Jr

Summary: The Cretaceous-Cenozoic expansion of tropical forests created canopy space for diverse epiphytic communities, including Eupolypod ferns. Eupolypods proliferated in this niche, and the transition to the canopy was associated with reduced xylem content and smaller tracheid diameters. However, no differences were found in species vulnerability to embolism and pit membrane thickness. In Eupolypod epiphytes, traits associated with water conservation, such as thicker leaves and lower stomatal density, favored water retention and may have contributed to the radiation in the canopy.

Undercover operation: Belowground insect herbivory modifies systemic plant defense and repels aboveground foraging insect herbivores

Morgan N. Thompson, John M. Grunseich, Laura O. Marmolejo, Natalie M. Aguirre, Pius A. Bradicich, Spencer T. Behmer, Charles P. -C. Suh, Anjel M. Helms

Summary: It has been found that belowground larval herbivory enhances aboveground plant defenses and deters aboveground herbivores. The larvae-damaged plants emit higher amounts of a key volatile compound, and belowground herbivory may also influence aboveground herbivore foraging decisions through plant nutrient content.

Plant communication across different environmental contexts suggests a role for stomata in volatile perception

Natalie M. Aguirre, John M. Grunseich, Andreisa F. Lima, Stephen D. Davis, Anjel M. Helms

Summary: Plants can enhance or prime their defenses against future herbivore attack by detecting herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) from their damaged neighbours. The extent to which plants are able to perceive and respond to these cues across different environmental contexts remains poorly understood.

Deep Learning-Based Classification of Plant Xylem Tissue from Light Micrographs

Sean Wu, Reem Al Dabagh, Anna L. Jacobsen, Helen Holmlund, Fabien Scalzo

Summary: Traditionally, anatomical studies of plant hydraulic traits involved manual measurements of light micrographs. Our research introduces a deep learning-based model that accurately classifies plant cells by utilizing both cropped cell images and broader cropped images that incorporate contextual information. The results demonstrate the importance of local context in accurately classifying cells, and suggest potential future applications in automatic cell-type detection in plant tissue images.
