Summary: Skin lesions caused by UV radiation seriously affect people's life quality. The natural composite gel derived from fish scales (SE-gel) has been found to effectively protect and repair UV-irradiated skin by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. SE-gel demonstrated good UV absorption, water absorption, moisturizing, and free radical scavenging abilities. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that SE-gel could improve cell viability, reduce oxidative stress, and prevent UV-induced skin damage and inflammation, suggesting its potential application in UV-irradiated skin damage prevention and repair.

Summary: Redox flagging is crucial for the normal functioning of cells, and maintaining a proper level of antioxidants is essential. Skin aging is influenced by genetics and environmental triggers, especially ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and skin type. UVR not only causes DNA damage, but also triggers the breakdown of collagen and impairs its regeneration, leading to wrinkled and atrophic skin. While the role of antioxidants in protecting against UVR-induced damage is still uncertain, research has led to the development of strategies for skin rejuvenation and slowing down the process of photoaging, primarily through plant-based products.

Summary: An unripe apple extract (UAE) has been found to have beneficial effects on wrinkle improvement, skin moisturizing, skin inflammation, and antioxidant activities in UVB-irradiated hairless mice. UAE prevented UVB-induced wrinkle formation and skin water loss, reduced skin edema, neutrophil infiltration, and pro-inflammatory cytokine production, while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokine levels. Additionally, UAE exhibited anti-oxidative stress properties by increasing glutathione content and inhibiting lipid peroxidation and superoxide anion production.

Summary: PON2, an intracellular protein, plays a protective role against cell oxidative stress and apoptosis. This study explored the modulation of PON2 in human dermal fibroblasts exposed to UVA radiation and found that PON2 is up-regulated immediately after UVA exposure and gradually decreases in the post-exposure phase. This upregulation may be related to the increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and could play an important role in mitigating UVA-induced damage and preventing the consequences of UV exposure.

Summary: Cryptotanshinone (CTS) can ameliorate UV radiation-induced skin photodamage by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, attenuating DNA damage, activating Nrf2 signaling pathway, improving mitochondrial dysfunction, and inhibiting apoptosis. Furthermore, CTS can promote mitochondrial biosynthesis in skin cells by activating the AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1 alpha signaling pathway. These findings provide a theoretical and experimental basis for the application of CTS as an anti-photodamage and anti-aging agent for the skin.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive environmental contaminants that induce neurotoxicity in various organisms. This study revealed that photoaged polystyrene (P-PS) caused more severe neurotoxic effects compared to virgin polystyrene (V-PS) in zebrafish. Exposure to P-PS altered antioxidant enzyme activity, neurotransmitter levels, and behavior in larval zebrafish. Furthermore, the expression of genes related to neurotransmission and oxidative stress was significantly affected by PS exposure. These findings provide new insights into the potential risks of MPs in the environment.

Summary: According to WHO statistics, millions of couples and individuals suffer from infertility, with varicocele identified as a leading cause of male infertility. This review examines the role of oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathophysiology of varicocele and its impact on fertility. High levels of ROS can lead to infertility by damaging DNA, affecting lipid peroxidation, and inactivating enzymes and proteins involved in spermatogenesis.

Summary: Relevant studies have shown that Oroxylin A promotes senescence in hepatic stellate cells (HSC) by activating the cGAS-STING pathway. The activation of this pathway is dependent on the downregulation of DNMT3A, which suppresses cGAS gene DNA methylation. Oroxylin A prevents the production of methionine metabolites, leading to a decrease in SAM levels and consequently a reduction in DNMT activity. In vivo experiments also confirmed the induction of HSC senescence by Oroxylin A, with partially offset by DNMT3A overexpression.

Summary: In the formalin pain test, the EM-2 analogs EM-2-Me, EM-2-Et, and EM-2-Bu showed significant analgesic effects with reduced tolerance and gastrointestinal side effects. These effects were mediated through central opioid mechanisms, with EM-2-Me possibly involving dynorphin A release and EM-2-Bu directly activating multiple opioid receptors.
