Background: Facemasks are increasingly worn during air pollution episodes in China, but their protective effects are poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the filtration efficiencies of N95 facemasks and the cardiopulmonary benefits associated with wearing facemasks during episodes of pollution. Results: We measured the filtration efficiencies of particles in ambient air of six types of N95 facemasks with a manikin headform. The most effective one was used in a double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover study, involving 15 healthy young adults, conducted during 2 days of severe pollution in Beijing, China. Subjects were asked to walk along a busy-traffic road for 2 h wearing authentic or sham N95 facemasks. Clinical tests were performed four times to determine changes in the levels of biomarkers of airway inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and oxidative stress within 24 h after exposure. The facemasks removed 48-75% of number concentrations of ambient air particles between 5.6 and 560 nm in diameter. After adjustments for multiple comparison, the exhaled nitric oxide level and the levels of interleukin-1 alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-6 in exhaled breath condensate increased significantly in all subjects; however, the increases in those wearing authentic facemasks were statistically significantly lower than in the sham group. No significant between-group difference was evident in the urinary creatinine-corrected malondialdehyde level. In arterial stiffness indicators, the ejection duration of subjects wearing authentic facemasks was higher after exposure compared to the sham group; no significant between-group difference was found in augmentation pressure or the augmentation index. Conclusions: In young healthy adults, N95 facemasks partially reduced acute particle-associated airway inflammation, but neither systemic oxidative stress nor endothelial dysfunction improved significantly. The clinical significance of these findings long-term remains to be determined.

Discovery of emerging organic pollutants in the atmosphere through an omics approach

Zhen Cheng, Xinghua Qiu, Xiaodi Shi, Xing Jiang, Tong Zhu

Summary: Ambient air pollution is a significant risk to public health due to the presence of numerous known and unknown compounds. This study reviews the analytical techniques for air pollution, focusing on the omics approach, including sample preparation, analysis, compounds prioritization, and identification. High-resolution mass spectrometry combined with chromatography allows for the digitalization of complex environmental matrices into full-component data. Chemical fingerprints, suspect lists, and biological effects are essential strategies for screening critical and hazardous substances. The omics approach provides a paradigm for discovering emerging air pollutants, but further advancements in instruments and databases are needed to assess the health risks associated with key pollutants.

Summary: This study developed and validated a simple and rapid LC-MS/MS method for the quantification of low-abundance lysoglycerophospholipids (Lyso-GPLs) in plasma. The method showed good accuracy and sensitivity, and enabled the quantification of different types of Lyso-GPLs. The application of this method can improve understanding of the roles of circulating low-abundant Lyso-GPLs in health and diseases.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of the stable boundary layer (SBL) in haze pollution events using observational data. The study finds that the decoupled SBL dominates in haze pollution events and has notable differences in turbulent structure compared to the coupled SBL. The existence of the decoupled SBL requires further research and attention to improve the accuracy of pollutant concentration forecasting.

Landscape fire smoke enhances the association between fine particulate matter exposure and acute respiratory infection among children under 5 years of age: Findings of a case-crossover study for 48 low- and middle-income countries

Jiajianghui Li, Yutong Samuel Cai, Frank J. Kelly, Martin J. Wooster, Yiqun Han, Yixuan Zheng, Tianjia Guan, Pengfei Li, Tong Zhu, Tao Xue

Summary: The study found that PM2.5 from landscape fires had a stronger association with ARI among children under 5 years compared to PM2.5 from non-fire sources. Each 1 μg/m³ increment of fire-sourced PM2.5 was associated with a 3.2% increase in the risk of ARI. The proportion of fire-sourced particles significantly mediated the association between total PM2.5 concentration and ARI.

Source sectors underlying PM2.5-related deaths among children under 5 years of age in 17 low- and middle-income countries

Summary: This study analyzed the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 from different sources and under-five deaths (U5Ds) in vulnerable children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The results showed that PM2.5 from desert dust, solid biofuel combustion, and open fires had the greatest impact on child health. Public health interventions should consider the source profile of PM2.5 to effectively protect child health.

Summary: In the past 25 years, atmospheric chemistry research in China has grown rapidly, focusing on the concept of air pollution complexity. Over 24,000 papers on air pollution, authored or co-authored by Chinese scientists, were published in 2021. This paper reviews representative studies on various aspects of atmospheric chemistry in China, providing a starting point for understanding the field. The advances discussed in this paper have established a theoretical framework for air pollution, supported effective air pollution control policies in China, and created opportunities for education and career development.

Summary: This study examined the effect of long-term exposure to PM2.5 from different sources on birthweight in low-and middle-income countries. The results showed that exposure to PM2.5 from sources such as international shipping, solvents, agricultural waste burning, road transportation, waste handling and disposal, and windblown dust was significantly associated with a decrease in birthweight. The changes in birthweight varied geographically and were determined by both the concentration and source profile of the PM2.5 mixture.

Effects of endogenous and exogenous reductants in lung fluid on the bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential of ultrafine particles

Ya-qi Yu, Tong Zhu

Summary: The health risk posed by ultrafine particles (UFPs) is potentially increased by the reducing substances present in lung fluid, mainly consisting of metals and quinones. The bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential of UFPs were analyzed, and it was found that UFPs containing Mn had higher values than those containing Cu and Fe. Both endogenous and exogenous reductants can increase the bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential, with greater increments observed for composite UFPs. The findings highlight the importance of the bioaccessible metal fraction in UFPs for inducing oxidative stress and provide novel insights into their toxicity and health risks.

Summary: Phage therapy, a century-old treatment for bacterial infection, was abandoned after the availability of antibiotics but revived due to antimicrobial resistance today. While there are many articles on its clinical application, little research has focused on phage therapy from a regulatory perspective. This study divides sections into different regions to explore the regulations of phage therapy, providing new insights into China's regulations. The authors hope to inspire ideas on how countries can learn from each other's legislation to overcome regulatory hurdles.
