Summary: In 2020, there were 98,421 cases of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCC) worldwide, with human papillomavirus (HPV) being recognized as the leading cause. This review conducted a literature review on the relationship between OPSCC and HPV, focusing on the clinical differences, prognosis, and treatment between HPV+ and HPV- OPSCC. It also analyzed various HPV diagnostic methods. By presenting key information in an organized and accessible way, this review helps healthcare professionals gain a better understanding of the HPV-OPSCC relationship and contributes to the prevention of various cancers caused by HPV, including oropharyngeal cancer.

Summary: The prevalence of oropharyngeal high-risk HPV was found to be 6.7% in patients undergoing tonsillectomy, with a higher rate in younger individuals and men. Patients undergoing tonsillectomy for infectious indications had a significantly higher risk of high-risk HPV positivity compared to those with non-infectious indications. This study is the first to report the correlation between recurrent tonsil infections and HPV positivity in tonsil tissue.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of adverse lifestyle factors on outcomes in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Alcohol use was found to increase the risk of disease relapse in HPV-positive OPSCC patients, while heavy smoking age >= 30 pack-years was associated with increased risk of death and disease relapse in OPSCC patients. The combination of alcohol use and heavy smoking further increased the risk of disease relapse in HPV-positive OPSCC patients. These findings suggest that adverse lifestyle factors may influence the treatment outcomes of HPV-related OPSCC.

Summary: The study found that genes in HPV-negative OPSCCs are related to the immune system, while those in HPV-positive OPSCCs are mainly involved in glutathione derivative biosynthesis and xenobiotic metabolism. A potential prognostic biomarker, AKR1C3, was identified, and inhibition of it can enhance the effectiveness of Cisplatin.

Summary: This study analyzed the cases of HPV-related OPSCC patients and found that p16, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and multinucleated tumor cells (MuNI) play a role in predicting patients' prognosis. The results showed a strong relationship between tumor immunity and oncologic outcomes in OPSCC regardless of HPV status, which may provide opportunities for the development of biomarkers and the application of precision oncology approaches.

Summary: This study investigated the outcomes of salvage surgery for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer. The results showed that adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, negative margins, negative lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), and lower stage were associated with a lower risk of recurrence. Summary: While HPV status is known to have a positive impact on prognosis in initial treatments of HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), its effects on patients who receive salvage surgery (SS) are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the role of SS for patients with locoregional recurrence (LRR) of HPV-positive OPSCC and its impact on survival rates. A scoping review of literature was conducted, including 995 individuals, and survival endpoints were analyzed. The findings highlight the limited reporting of survival data on SS for HPV-positive OPSCC, making it difficult to assess the potential benefits and drawbacks of this therapy for clinical decision-making.

Summary: Oropharyngeal cancer is increasingly caused by HPV, possibly due to changing sexual behavior. Sexual intercourse elicits a stronger immune response to HPV compared to oral sex, potentially leading to a weaker immune response in individuals who have their oral sex debut before or at the same time as sexual intercourse, increasing their risk of developing persistent oral HPV infection and oropharyngeal cancer.

Summary: The study revealed that P16 tumor status is the main predictive factor of synchronous primary neoplasia (SPN) in OPSCC patients. Patients with SPN were more likely to receive non-curative treatment, while there was no impact of SPN on treatment strategies for patients treated with curative intent. There were no overall survival differences between patients with or without SPN.

Summary: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and aggressive form of thyroid cancer with a poor prognosis. Improving the management of this deadly disease involves the use of molecular tests for targeted therapies, fast-track dedicated care pathways, and prompt initiation of treatment. Adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy is recommended for localized disease after surgery, while chemotherapy or targeted therapy combined with decompressive cervical radiotherapy is recommended for locally advanced or metastatic disease.

Summary: In order to address the evaluation issue of radiotherapy innovations, the HERO project of ESTRO has initiated the development of a radiotherapy-specific value-based framework. A systematic literature search revealed no widely accepted definition or classification system for radiotherapy innovations. However, the unique properties of radiotherapy interventions can be used to categorize innovations in radiation oncology, but clear terminology denoting radiotherapy-specific characteristics is still needed.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic analysis of primary ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC). The results provide the first comprehensive molecular atlas for primary GCOC, including previously identified CTNNB1 mutation and novel alterations in MAP3K, EP300, and the 22q11.21 region. The transcriptome analysis reveals significant involvement of cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. More GCOC cases should be compared to validate these findings for accurate clinical guidance.

Summary: This study compares the outcomes of transoral resections using the da Vinci SP and da Vinci Xi systems for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). The results indicate that the da Vinci SP system has advantages in terms of reduced docking and console times, as well as improved rates of wide negative resection margins. However, there were no significant differences in complication rates or postoperative functional outcomes between the two systems.
