Neurological disorders are found to be influencing the peripheral tissues outside CNS. Recent developments in biomarkers for CNS have emerged with various diagnostic and therapeutic shortcomings. The role of central biomarkers including CSF-based and molecular imaging-based probes are still unclear for early diagnosis of major neurological diseases. Current trends show that early detection of neurodegenerative diseases with non-invasive methods is a major focus of researchers, and the development of biomarkers aiming peripheral tissues is in demand. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are known for the progressive loss in neural structures or functions, including the neural death. Various dysfunctions of metabolic and biochemical pathways are associated with early occurrence of neuro-disorders in peripheral tissues including skin, blood cells, and eyes. This article reviews the peripheral biomarkers explored for early detection of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases including blood cells, skin fibroblast, proteomics, saliva, olfactory, stomach and colon, heart and peripheral nervous system, and others.

The Multifarious Applications of Copper Nanoclusters in Biosensing and Bioimaging and Their Translational Role in Early Disease Detection

Kumar Babu Busi, Mathangi Palanivel, Krishna Kanta Ghosh, Writoban Basu Ball, Balazs Gulyas, Parasuraman Padmanabhan, Sabyasachi Chakrabortty

Summary: Nanoclusters with ultrasmall size and high fluorescence are advantageous for use in biological systems, particularly in early disease diagnosis. Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have several advantages over other metallic nanoclusters, making them ideal for bioimaging purposes. Optical imaging technology, utilizing the fluorescent properties of Cu NCs, has promising applications in early cancer diagnosis and imaging-guided treatment.

The Galenic Heart in the Gothic Cathedral and the Adjournment in Discovery of Circulation

Laszlo Kiraly, Balazs Gulyas

Summary: The study found consistent parallels between Aristotle's/Galen's tripartite concept and the structure of Gothic cathedrals, suggesting a common philosophical and symbolic foundation. The interpretation of this tripartite concept effectively delayed the recognition of circulation and the role of the heart.

Stronger brain activation for own baby but similar activation toward babies of own and different ethnicities in parents living in a multicultural environment

Bindiya Lakshmi Raghunath, Kelly Hwee Leng Sng, S. H. Annabel Chen, Vimalan Vijayaragavan, Balazs Gulyas, Peipei Setoh, Gianluca Esposito

Summary: Specific facial features in infants automatically elicit attention, affection, and nurturing behavior of adults, known as the baby schema effect. There is also an innate tendency to categorize people into in-group and out-group members based on salient features such as ethnicity. This study used fMRI to examine parents' neural responses to infants of different ethnicities and kinship relationships. The findings revealed that parents showed similar brain activations, regardless of ethnicity and kinship, in regions associated with attention, reward processing, empathy, memory, goal-directed action planning, and social cognition. These regions were activated to a higher degree when viewing the parents' own infant.

Surface Ligand Influences the Cu Nanoclusters as a Dual Sensing Optical Probe for Localized pH Environment and Fluoride Ion

Kumar Babu Busi, Subhalaxmi Das, Mathangi Palanivel, Krishna Kanta Ghosh, Balazs Gulyas, Parasuraman Padmanabhan, Sabyasachi Chakrabortty

Summary: We have developed a simple and cost-effective method for the synthesis of red-/green-color-emitting protein/amino acid-mediated copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) in water. These Cu NCs exhibited strong fluorescence, aqueous colloidal stability, and low toxicity, making them suitable for applications in biology and environmental science. The optical properties of the Cu NCs responded linearly to changes in pH, and they showed a robust pH reversible nature between pH 7 and 11, which has potential for rapid and localized pH sensing. Additionally, the Cu NCs were found to be efficient optical probes for fluoride ion detection, with different limits of detection for protein-Cu NCs and amino acid-Cu NCs.
