A set of lead artefacts were recovered at the Late Roman Republican archaeological site of Monte dos Castelinhos (Portugal), located in a prominent position on the right bank of the Tagus River, in the rear of its estuary. All artefacts, namely 16 shapeless fragment, seven glandes plumbeae and six possible metallurgical remains, were analysed using Q-ICPMS to determine minor and trace elemental compositions (Ag, As, Bi, Cu, Ni, Sb and Sn) and Pb isotope ratios. Statistical analyses of these data allow us to identify elements with similar behaviours and to differentiate raw materials used in the manufacture of the lead artefacts. Variation on the concentrations of Ag, Bi, Cu and Sb suggests galena as the most probable lead ore source, although some artefacts with a high Cu content may suggest the reduction of litharge obtained from argentiferous jarosites containing Cu. Pb isotope ratios point to raw materials with a probable Iberian provenance, namely from mines of the Sierra Morena and Ossa Morena Zone. Besides, there is evidence of the use of lead also resulting by the reduction of litharge, a byproduct of the silver cupellation, in our case using argentiferous jarosites from the Iberian Pyrite Belt mixed with lead from other provenance.

Early Iron Age copper-based funerary items from southern Portugal

Pedro Valerio, Maria Fatima Araujo, Antonio M. Monge Soares, Luis C. Alves, Rui M. Soares, Linda Melo, Lidia Baptista

Summary: The recently excavated necropolises in Esfola and Monte do Bolor 1/2 in Beja, Portugal, revealed funerary items mainly made of low-tin bronze alloys, with some exceptions of copper or leaded bronze. These findings suggest an indigenous metallurgy influenced by earlier Phoenician stimuli, although the potential to achieve different colors by changing alloy compositions was not commonly utilized.

Summary: This study examines three Chalcolithic pits from the complex of ditched enclosures in Monte das Cabeceiras 2, Beja, with a focus on zooarchaeology and taphonomy. The analysis of filling sequences, material culture, and human remains sheds light on the social practices related to animal management during the Chalcolithic period in Southwestern Iberia. The presence of structured deposits with animal remains in the pits suggests possible feasting or ritual offerings, providing insights into the cultural practices of the time.

New evidence on Iron Age bronze metallurgy in southwestern Iberian Peninsula: ingots and artefacts from Cabeco Redondo (Portugal)

Pedro Valerio, Rui M. Soares, Rui J. C. Silva, Antonio M. Monge Soares, Maria Fatima Araujo

Summary: Archaeological works at Cabeco Redondo in southern Portugal have uncovered the remains of a monumental building from the 6th-5th century BC, with artifacts and architecture consistent with the post-Orientalizing contexts of the time. The metal debris found at the site, including copper ingots and various tools and ornaments, were studied using micro-EDXRF, optical microscopy, and SEM-EDS to determine their composition and manufacturing processes. The majority of the metal debris was pure copper, with some examples of bronze and leaded bronze. The artifacts mainly consisted of low-tin bronze and leaded bronze alloys. The study also compared the features of the metal debris and artifacts with other contemporary sites in the region to better understand the technological patterns of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula during the middle of the first millennium BC.

Summary: The study examines gold jewellery from archaeological sites in southern Portugal dating back to the 1st millennium BC. It focuses on two exceptional plaques depicting Mesopotamian iconography, two rings known as nezems, and a fragment of an earring or pendant. Various techniques, including p-EDXRF, SEM-EDS, optical microscopy, and reflectance transformation imaging, were used to analyze the production techniques, composition, and iconographic motifs of the jewellery. The study reveals different manufacturing processes, variable silver contents (11-39 wt%), and relatively constant copper amounts (1.8-2.5 wt%). The composition of individual items provides insights into associations, economic factors, and the gold alloys used by ancient goldsmith workshops.

Chalcolithic copper production and use in the western end of the Iberian Peninsula: The testimony of Castro de Chibanes (Portugal)

Pedro Valerio, Joaquina Soares, Luis C. Alves, Rui J. C. Silva, Maria Fatima Araujo, Carlos Tavares da Silva

Summary: Recent archaeological excavations at Castro de Chibanes in Portugal uncovered prehistoric remains from 2500-1900 cal BC, including ceramic crucibles and metal artefacts. Chemical and microstructural analysis revealed local copper production with varying arsenic contents, suggesting limited compositional homogenisation during post-casting manufacture. Comparison with other Chalcolithic settlements in the region indicates a broader context of metal production and use during the 3rd millennium BC. Furthermore, a previously identified bronze Bell Beaker tanged dagger was found to be composed of a leaded bronze alloy with a unique microstructure containing Cu-Fe sulphides with high Se contents, prompting a reassessment of its typology and chronology.

Summary: This research analyzed the texture, chemical composition, and mineral composition of Chalcolithic pottery from three different phases in the Lisbon region of Portugal. The results suggest that the production techniques of the pottery remained similar throughout the Chalcolithic period, with firing temperatures between 700 and 800 degrees Celsius. The pottery also used multiple sources of raw materials.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on graphene oxide for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd by slurry sampling microplasma optical emission spectrometry

Krzysztof Greda, Maja Welna, Anna Szymczycha-Madeja, Pawel Pohl

Summary: For the first time, a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-mu SPE) based on graphene oxide was used for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd. With this method, Cd can be efficiently extracted from a mixture of alkali and alkaline earth metals without the need for an elution step. The combination of D-mu SPE and SAGD OES significantly reduces matrix effects and improves the tolerance of Cd to alkali metals. The method shows simplicity in the measurement system and the commercially available nanosorbent used.

Summary: This work proposes a rapid and sensitive spectroscopic method for detecting melamine in food products using rare-earth Terbium-doped Graphene Quantum Dots (Tb-GQDs) synthesized by microwave and simple chemical conjugation methods. The synthesized Tb-GQDs show a spherical shape with a size of approximately 6 nm and a quantum yield of 52%. The maximum detection limit for melamine concentration in milk and milk products is found to be 0.31 μM. The dual emitting Tb-GQDs provide a sensitive and effective platform for real-time detection of melamine in food samples, particularly in milk, and show promising potential in the food industry.
