Objectives. - To describe and compare the epidemiological characteristics associated with influenza type A and B as well as the characteristics associated with influenza pneumonia. The secondary objective was to evaluate the performance of influenza rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) in the emergency department. Patients and methods. - Prospective study, including 251 adult patients admitted to the emergency department during the 2013-2014 influenza outbreaks for flu-like illness confirmed by RT-PCR. Results. - A total of 106 patients were infected with influenza type B (42%) and 145 with influenza type A (58%). Mean age was 56 and the sex-ratio was 0.9. In a multivariate analysis, the only factor independently related with the type of influenza strain was the patient's age. Overall, 17% of influenza-infected patients were vaccinated and 38% presented with pneumonia, with no significant difference between strains. In a univariate analysis, the risk factors associated with the occurrence of pneumonia were age, vaccination, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Only 22% of samples positive by RT-PCR for influenza. B and 40% for influenza A were positive by RDT. Conclusion. - Influenza type A and type B had similar clinical and biological signs, including severity. Influenza type B should not be neglected. Any emergency department may use the RDT for its ease-of-use and rapidity. However, its low sensitivity should be taken into consideration when interpreting results. (C) 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. Seroprevalence of Toscana Virus and Sandfly Fever Sicilian Virus in European Bat Colonies Measured Using a Neutralization Test

Nazli Ayhan, Marc Lopez-Roig, Abir Monastiri, Remi N. Charrel, Jordi Serra-Cobo

Summary: A study tested 329 bats from eight species collected in southern Spain for neutralizing antibodies specific to TOSV and SFSV, finding bats are not likely major players in the natural cycle of these sandfly-borne viruses; large breeding colonies can be used as sentinels for virus surveillance in specific locations.

Evaluation of a Trio Toscana Virus Real-Time RT-PCR Assay Targeting Three Genomic Regions within Nucleoprotein Gene

Laurence Thirion, Laura Pezzi, Irene Pedrosa-Corral, Sara Sanbonmatsu-Gamez, Xavier De Lamballerie, Alessandra Falchi, Mercedes Perez-Ruiz, Remi N. Charrel

Summary: In this study, three real-time RT-qPCR assays for detecting TOSV RNA were evaluated and combined to create a multi-region assay named Trio TOSV RT-qPCR. The Trio TOSV RT-qPCR assay showed equal or better performance in specificity and sensitivity compared to the three monoplex assays, indicating its potential for both research and diagnostic purposes.

Cytomegalovirus Viral Load in Transplanted Patients Using the NeuMoDx™ (Qiagen) Automated System: A 1-Month Experience Feedback

Lea Luciani, Denis Mongin, Laetitia Ninove, Antoine Nougairede, Kevin Bardy, Celine Gazin, Remi N. Charrel, Christine Zandotti

Summary: The evaluation of NeuMoDx™ in measuring CMV viral load showed that it is reliable and allows for rapid measurement, aiding in effective patient management. Despite initial differences in viral load measurement, long-term use of NeuMoDx™ compared to the classical technique R-GENE(R) did not demonstrate significant differences in patient management.

Evaluation of the Ridaquick Rotavirus/Adenovirus Immuno-Chromatographic Assay in Real-Life Situation

Francis Simo-Fouda, Laetitia Ninove, Lea Luciani, Christine Zandotti, Celine Gazin, Remi N. Charrel, Antoine Nougairede

Summary: The study retrospectively evaluated the rotavirus and adenovirus ICT routinely used in the virology laboratory at the University Hospital of Marseille, France. The results showed that the ICT had high sensitivity and specificity for rotavirus detection, but low sensitivity for adenovirus detection, indicating that a PCR-based assay is better suited for adenovirus detection in stools.

Eva Lopez, Margot Barthelemy, Cecile Baronti, Shirley Masse, Alessandra Falchi, Fabien Durbesson, Renaud Vincentelli, Xavier de Lamballerie, Remi Charrel, Bruno Coutard

Summary: A rapid molecular assay has been developed to detect mutations in variants of the COVID-19 virus, showing high sensitivity and specificity. This method can be used for high-throughput identification of mutations and serve as an initial screening to select samples for full genome sequencing.

Exposure to Phlebotomus perniciosus sandfly vectors is positively associated with Toscana virus and Leishmania infantum infection in human blood donors in Murcia Region, southeast Spain

Maria Ortuno, Clara Munoz, Tatiana Spitzova, Petra Sumova, Maria Asuncion Iborra, Pedro Perez-Cutillas, Nazli Ayhan, Remi N. Charrel, Petr Volf, Eduardo Berriatua

Summary: In a study conducted in Murcia Region, southeast Spain, the prevalence of antibodies against Phlebotomus perniciosus sandfly salivary gland homogenate (SGH) and recombinant protein rSP03B was found to be 69% and 88%, respectively. The prevalence of Toscana virus (TOSV), Sandfly Fever Sicilian virus (SFSV), and Leishmania infections were 26%, 0%, and 1%, respectively. The study also questioned the diagnostic value of rSP03B as a marker for these infections in humans.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immune response and neutralizing activity against SARS-CoV-2 among primary health care workers (PHCW) in France and assess the association between neutralizing activity and various factors, including the COVID-19 vaccination scheme. The study found that individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection were more likely to have neutralizing antibodies, regardless of vaccination status. Among those vaccinated with two doses, the time since vaccination was associated with the detection of neutralizing antibodies.

The Role of the Leishmania infantum Infected Dogs as a Potential Reservoir Host for Toscana Virus in a Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis Focus of Northern Tunisia

Khalil Dachraoui, Ifhem Chelbi, Imen Labidi, Raja Ben Osman, Aida Sayadi, Mourad Ben Said, Saifedine Cherni, Mohammed Abdo Saghir Abbas, Remi Charrel, Elyes Zhioua

Summary: This study investigated the role of dogs as reservoir hosts for Toscana virus (TOSV) and Leishmania infantum infections. Dogs exposed to sandfly bites were examined for TOSV and L. infantum infections, and the sandflies were screened for the presence of these pathogens. The results showed that dogs with zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) can serve as reservoirs for both TOSV and L. infantum, and can transmit TOSV to sandfly vectors in natural settings.
