Summary: This study aimed to describe considerations for developing supportive care interventions targeted to head and neck cancer survivors. The findings showed unanimous support for developing HNC-specific interventions. Group-based interventions were preferred for the value of peer-support, although not suitable for all survivors. The suggested topics for interventions included education on side effects, symptom management, relationship changes, and fear of recurrence. These findings can inform the development of supportive care interventions tailored to the unique psychosocial concerns of HNC survivors.

Summary: The study found that 37% of bereaved families experienced emotional distress during code status discussions, with 32% identifying areas for improvement. Factors associated with high distress included families hoping for miraculous recovery, feeling unable to voice their opinions on CPR, and physicians failing to adapt explanations to families' preparation level. Recommendations for improvement included holding discussions in a relaxed atmosphere conducive to questioning and ensuring physicians adapt explanations to families' preparation level.

Summary: This study aims to identify opportunities for improvement in providing palliative care services after a serious fall. The findings suggest that palliative care is associated with death and aggressive life-sustaining treatments, indicating that early use of palliative care could benefit patients who fall.

Summary: In recent years, therapy for oncologic diseases has advanced with the goal of improving patient survival and quality of life. While robotic technology is widely used in other surgical specialties, its application in head and neck surgery lacks large-scale randomized trials for evaluation. Further research is needed to determine the clinical effectiveness and safety of robot-assisted surgery in this field.

Summary: This study found that only 19.3% of metastatic head and neck cancer patients received palliative care. Factors associated with palliative care utilization included more recent years of diagnosis, Northeast facility geography, and non-private insurances. Additionally, interventional palliative care and pain management only palliative care were associated with lower overall survival compared to no palliative care.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the utility of radiologically defined sarcopenia, or a low skeletal muscle index (SMI), as a biomarker for frailty and postoperative complications (POC) in patients with head and neck skin cancer (HNSC). The study used retrospectively collected data and found that low SMIs were related to frailty and malnutrition. However, only frailty based on Geriatric 8 (G8) score was related to POC. The study concluded that low SMI is a practical biomarker for frailty and malnutrition in HNSC, and further research should focus on interventions based on low SMI scores.

Summary: This study aimed to compare outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) between patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and patients without MPNs. The study found that patients with MPNs had a lower risk of in-hospital death or cardiac arrest after AMI compared with non-MPN patients, but a higher risk of major bleeding. Additionally, there was a decreasing temporal rate of in-hospital death or cardiac arrest and bleeding in non-MPN patients, while there was an increasing temporal rate of in-hospital death or cardiac arrest and a stable rate of major bleeding in MPN patients.

Summary: This study found that an elevated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with an increased risk of head and neck cancer (HNC) incidence. The risk is particularly significant for oral cavity, oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and laryngeal cancers. The association between elevated eGFR and HNC risk is observed even in individuals with adjusted hypertension and diabetes. These findings have implications for understanding the etiology of HNC and developing preventive strategies.

Summary: Specialized palliative care services are available at all Nordic university hospitals, but the collaboration between head and neck surgeons, oncologists, and palliative care specialists is not well-structured. The palliative care pathway for patients with HNC is not systematically organized, indicating a need for early integrated palliative care in addition to existing care pathways in the Nordic countries.

Summary: Understanding patient and caregiver experience is crucial for person-centered care, especially in palliative care. This study aimed to compare the experiences of family caregivers in PCU and non-PCU units during their loved ones' last hospital admission. Differences were observed in terms of scientific appropriateness of care and person-centered care between the two groups.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer patients who underwent long-term systemic anticoagulation had a lower risk of sepsis, shock, acute kidney injury, and in-hospital mortality, and a shorter hospital stay. The study suggests that long-term systemic anticoagulation should be considered as a treatment option for pancreatic cancer patients.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of cochlear implantation in children diagnosed with ASD. The results suggest that some deaf children with ASD can achieve measurable open-set speech perception after approximately 4.5 years of cochlear implant use. Language usage varies among individuals, and most children showed improvement in social engagement.

Summary: This study characterizes the demographic and clinical characteristics of infants diagnosed with paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) and investigates sex-and race-specific differences in presentation. It highlights the importance of flexible laryngoscopy for evaluating stridor in infants and reports the absence of sex-and race/ethnicity-based differences in the presentation of PVFM in this cohort.

Summary: This study found that the most common and severe symptoms reported by patients with advanced cancer were fatigue, low sense of well-being, and poor appetite. However, these symptoms were addressed less frequently than expected in shared care plans developed by oncology nurses. Further research is needed to understand how primary palliative care interventions can effectively improve bothersome symptoms for patients with advanced cancer.

Summary: Complex regional pain syndrome is a challenging chronic pain disorder, and the current treatment options are often insufficient. Scrambler therapy, a noninvasive method of neuromodulation, has shown promise in treating refractory neuropathic pain. This case report presents two patients with complex regional pain syndrome who underwent scrambler therapy and experienced significant pain relief and improved function and quality of life.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with prelingual deafness experienced delays in their cochlear implant care, with longer intervals between candidacy evaluation and surgery, as well as fewer postoperative rehabilitation visits. The average age at implantation for the COVID-19 group was 5.7 years, higher than the pre-COVID-19 group's average age of 3.7 years.
