To examine the association between nutritional status and frailty in older adults. Cross-sectional study. Community-dwelling older adults were recruited from 10 study sites in South Korea. 1473 volunteers aged 70-84 years without severe cognitive impairment and who participated in the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) conducted in 2016. Nutritional status was measured using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF). Frailty was assessed with the Fried's frailty index. The relationship between nutritional status and frailty was examined using the multinomial regression analysis, adjusting for covariates. Of the respondents 14.3% had poor nutrition (0.8% with malnutrition, 13.5% at risk of malnutrition). There were 10.7% who were frail, with 48.5% being prefrail, and 40.8% robust. Poor nutrition was related to a significantly increased risk of being prefrail (odds ratio [OR]: 1.59, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09-2.32) and frail (OR: 3.30, 95% CI: 1.96-5.54). Poor nutritional status is strongly associated with frailty in older adults. More research to understand the interdependency between nutritional status and frailty may lead to better management of the two geriatric conditions.

Summary: The study translated CFS into Korean and found significant correlations between CFS-K and other frailty screening tools, indicating its validity in assessing frailty in older Korean patients. Further large-scale studies in various clinical settings are needed to evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of CFS-K.

Summary: The study found that depression alone or depression combined with cognitive impairment was associated with higher risk of falls in older adults. Additionally, gender differences were noted in the risk of falls, with depression having a bigger effect on the risk of falls in men compared to women.

Summary: Frailty in older adults, especially when combined with other health domains such as cognitive, psychological, and social aspects, can predict adverse outcomes including institutionalization and mortality. The risk of negative health outcomes increases with frailty in a higher number of domains, and specific combinations of frailty domains have varying effects on outcomes.

Eun-Jeong Han, Mi Kyung Song, Yunhwan Lee

Summary: This study aimed to identify trajectories of multimorbidity in older adults prior to receiving long-term care benefits and demonstrate their value in predicting mortality. Results showed three patterns of multimorbidity trajectories over a 10-year period: consistently low morbidity, abrupt increase in morbidity, and gradual increase in morbidity. Those with high-risk trajectories had higher mortality rates compared to those with low morbidity.
