This study evaluated the adverse effect of wastewater effluents on three fish species, Carassius auratus, Zacco platypus, and Zacco koreanus, collected in the Eungcheon, Mihocheon, and Busocheon streams, respectively. Fish gills, liver, and kidneys from the mixing zone (MZ) and sites upstream (US) and downstream (DS) of the MZ were analyzed for oxidative stress responses and histology. Catalase and glutathione S-transferase activity was significantly higher at MZ and DS than from US (p < 0.05), indicating induction of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Additionally, degree of tissue changes (DTC) indicated highest histopathological alteration in MZ, followed by DS and US. Integrated biomarker response (IBR) for oxidative stress and histopathological alterations showed higher values consistently for 1 koreanus than other two species. Water temperature, EC, and TN levels seemed to be responsible for the observed biomarker responses. These findings indicate that thermal hot spring effluent discharged into Busocheon steam induced the most significant impact on the cool water species (Z. koreanus). Overall, this study suggests that the IBR index is a very useful tool for monitoring in situ adverse effects of wastewater effluents on fish, particularly for histopathological alterations representing prolonged impact. Trophic fractionation in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture off Tongyoung Coast: A stable isotope approach

Summary: Through stable isotope analysis, this study identified sea cucumber as the most important extractive co-cultured species in the IMTA system, followed by suspension-feeding bivalves, with cultured seaweeds having the least impact on waste reduction. The lack of isotopic consistency between IMTA and control feeders suggests minimal contribution of aquaculture waste to the neighboring coastal environment.

Summary: In this study, it was found that maternal exposure to sublethal concentrations of benzotriazole had transgenerational effects on the freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna at the genomic and individual levels. Even descendants that had never been exposed to benzotriazole showed significant alterations in gene expression and individual size. Interestingly, detoxification related genes were affected differently in exposed and unexposed generations.

Biofuel production from Euglena: Current status and techno-economic perspectives

Sunah Kim, Hyungjoon Im, Jaecheul Yu, Keunho Kim, Minjeong Kim, Taeho Lee

Summary: Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuel. The resources for SAFs have shifted from oil crops to agricultural waste and now to microalgae. Microalgae are the best feedstock for jet biofuel production due to their productivity and carbon dioxide capturing capability. However, microalgae-based biofuel faces the limitation of a high freezing point. A recently developed jet biofuel derived from Euglena wax ester has attracted attention for its low freezing point. Challenges remain in improving production yields and conducting techno-economic analysis. Valorization of industrial byproducts, such as food wastes, will ensure economic viability of biofuel production.

Particulate matter-induced metabolic recoding of epigenetics in macrophages drives pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.
