The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether 6-mm dental implants in the posterior segments of either jaw perform equally well in terms of clinical and radiographic outcomes when compared with 10-mm implants after 5 y of loading. Patients with single-tooth gaps in the posterior area who were scheduled for implant therapy were randomly assigned to a group receiving either a 6- or 10-mm implant. After a healing period of 10 wk, implants were loaded with a screw-retained single crown and followed up at yearly intervals. Of 96 patients, 86 could be recalled after 5 y. The implant survival rates amounted to 91% (95% confidence interval: 0.836 to 0.998) for the 6-mm group and 100% for the 10-mm group (P = 0.036). Median crown-to-implant (C/I) ratios were 1.75 (interquartile range [IQR], 1.50 to 1.90) for the 6-mm group and 1.04 (IQR, 0.95 to 1.15) for the 10-mm group, whereas the median marginal bone levels measured -0.29 mm (IQR, -0.92 to 0.23) for the 6-mm group and -0.15 mm (IQR: -0.93 - 0.41) for the 10-mm group after 5 y. The C/I ratio turned out to be statistically significant (P < 0.001), whereas marginal bone levels showed no significant difference between the groups. The 6-mm implants exhibited significantly lower survival rates than the 10-mm implants over 5 y, whereas there was no difference between upper and lower jaws in terms of survival (P = 0.58). Lost implants did not show any sign of marginal bone loss or peri-implant infection previous to loss of osseointegration. High C/I ratio and implant length had no significant effect on marginal bone level changes or technical and biological complications (German Clinical Trials Registry: DRKS00006290).

Effect of tapered-end and round-end bristles on the abrasive dentine wear applying increasing brushing forces

Blend Hamza, Leonardo Svellenti, Philipp Koerner, Thomas Attin, Florian J. Wegehaupt

Summary: This study investigates the effect of toothbrush bristles end configuration on abrasive dentine wear at different brushing forces. The results show that brushing with tapered-end bristles significantly reduces abrasive dentine wear compared to brushing with round-end bristles, regardless of the applied brushing force. This suggests that tapered-end toothbrushes may be a safer choice, especially for patients showing signs of non-carious cervical lesions.

Effect of the toothbrush tuft arrangement and bristle stiffness on the abrasive dentin wear

Blend Hamza, Maria Niedzwiecki, Philipp Koerner, Thomas Attin, Florian J. Wegehaupt

Summary: This study investigated the impact of toothbrush tuft arrangement and bristle stiffness on abrasive dentin wear. The results showed that crossed tuft toothbrushes caused less wear compared to parallel tuft toothbrushes. Additionally, soft crossed tuft toothbrushes resulted in higher wear compared to medium crossed tuft toothbrushes. These findings can provide useful guidance for dentists and dental hygienists in advising patients.

Species-specific enamel differences in hardness and abrasion resistance between the permanent incisors of cattle (Bos primigenius taurus) and the ever-growing incisors of nutria (Myocastor coypus)

Valentin L. Fischer, Daniela E. Winkler, Robert Glogowski, Thomas Attin, Jean-Michel Hatt, Marcus Clauss, Florian Wegehaupt

Summary: The wear rates of hypselodont teeth in lagomorphs or rodents are higher compared to ungulates, possibly due to differences in enamel hardness. In this study, the hardness of enamel from cattle and nutria incisors was tested, and the susceptibility to enamel abrasion was assessed using different abrasives. The results showed that nutria enamel had lower hardness than cattle enamel and was more susceptible to abrasion when exposed to fine silt and volcanic ash.

Microbial approaches for the assessment of toothpaste efficacy against oral species: A method comparison

Pune N. Paque, Lamprini Karygianni, Julien Kneubuehler, Lorenzo Fiscalini, Daniel B. Wiedemeier, Marcel Muller, Thomas Attin, Thomas Thurnheer

Summary: This study compared different microbial methods to evaluate the properties of antimicrobial toothpaste and assessed the antibacterial efficacy of different toothpastes against various oral microorganisms in a laboratory setting. The results showed that toothpastes with amine fluoride and triclosan had the highest antimicrobial efficacy, while the addition of activated carbon had no significant effect on the antimicrobial action. Additionally, the selection of a wide range of oral microorganisms is crucial when testing the chemical impact of toothpaste and its supplements.

The L-shape technique in guided bone regeneration with simultaneous implant placement in the esthetic zone: A step-by-step protocol and a 2-14 year retrospective study

Anina-Nives Zuercher, Leonardo Mancini, Nadja Naenni, Daniel-Stefan Thoma, Franz-Josef Strauss, Ronald-Ernst Jung

Summary: This study describes the L-shape technique in guided bone regeneration (GBR) with simultaneous implant placement and reports on its clinical, esthetic, and patient satisfaction outcomes up to 14 years of follow-up. The results show that the L-shape augmentation procedure is a reliable technique for GBR and simultaneous implant placement in the esthetic zone, with stable clinical and esthetic results and high levels of patient satisfaction.

Manuel J. Zoller, Blend Hamza, Claudia Cucuzza, Andrea Gubler, Thomas Attin, Florian J. Wegehaupt

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) and relative enamel abrasivity (REA) values of charcoal toothpastes. The results showed that the RDA and REA values of charcoal toothpastes did not differ significantly from previously tested commercially available toothpastes.

Effect of brushing force on the abrasive dentin wear using slurries with different abrasivity values

Blend Hamza, Laura Martinola, Philipp Korner, Andrea Gubler, Thomas Attin, Florian Just Wegehaupt

Summary: This study investigated the effects of abrasive slurries with different RDA values and increasing brushing forces on dentin wear. The results showed that the abrasivity of the slurry did not contribute to abrasive wear when the brushing force was kept at 1N. However, increasing the brushing force to 2N resulted in significantly higher abrasive wear, particularly with the use of a high abrasive slurry.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the wear of resin-based fissure sealants with different compositions properties under erosive, abrasive, and erosive/abrasive conditions. Results showed that sealants with higher filler content exhibited better wear resistance, while the addition of fluoride reduced the wear resistance of sealants at similar filler contents.

Ten-Year Performance of Posterior 6-mm Implants with Single-Tooth Restorations: A Randomized Controlled Trial

P. Sahrmann, N. Naenni, R. E. Jung, C. H. F. Hammerle, T. Attin, P. R. Schmidlin

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of short dental implants (TG) to longer implants (CG) with single crown restorations after 10 years. The results showed that the survival rates of TG and CG were 85.7% and 97.1%, respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups. The study concluded that short dental implants with single-crown restorations can be considered a valuable alternative, especially when vertical bone dimensions are limited.

Summary: This research investigated the effect of simplified adhesive strategies on the marginal integrity in primary molars. The results showed that universal adhesives applied in selective enamel etch or self-etch mode resulted in comparable marginal integrities when restoring class-II cavities in primary molars. Shortening the adhesive application time could lead to a reduction in the marginal integrity.
