In this article, we analyse the evolution of circular economy (CE) scientific knowledge in the most productive political geographies in the field, namely the European Union (EU) 28 and China by using bibliometric, network and survey analysis. Our objective is to provide a systemic, quantitative, visiotemporal review of the evolution of the CE scientific research field. Using Web of Science (WoS) database and Scopus, we trace the bibliometric characteristics of key research terms, their co-occurrences, publication (co)authorships at multi-level (author, institute, city, region, country), issue journals, literature citations and funding sources. Our findings from co-authorship, citation, co-citation, bibliometric coupling, co-occurrence and network analyses indicate that China and the EU have the highest amount of CE literature published and are each other's primary source of co-authorship. Emerging or reiterated main themes in the joint CE literature between EU and China are emergy analysis, indicators; resource efficiency, food waste, zero waste; eco-cities, lifestyle and governance. There appears a good potential for international cooperation in the sectoral fields of automotive, construction and demolition, critical raw materials; in business, (new) business models, product and services platforms, and from security perspective, resource security, security of supply, given the paucity of co-authorship between China and the EU under these themes. In China; Beijing, Shenyang, Dalian, Shanghai are the most active cities with a central role of Chinese Academy of Sciences at institution level of analysis. The most active EU institute is the Delft University of Technology in South Holland, the Netherlands. In Europe, we observe countries citing CE literature yet with no or few publications. Journal of Cleaner Production is the most important outlet for publications on CE and also for joint publications of CE researchers in both China and EU-28. We conclude our article with future research agendas, and a positive note on existing interests in international cooperation based on our survey participated by highly-cited CE authors. Circular economy strategies for electric vehicle batteries reduce reliance on raw materials

Joris Baars, Teresa Domenech, Raimund Bleischwitz, Hans Eric Melin, Oliver Heidrich

Summary: New battery chemistry can reduce reliance on cobalt for electric vehicles, but circular economy strategies are needed to prevent burden shifting to other resources. The adoption of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles will increase demand for natural resources, leading to new challenges and risks in the supply chain. To strengthen resilience and sustainability, circular economy strategies are essential to reduce primary resource requirements.

Summary: Integrated assessment models (IAMs) are key tools for climate mitigation scenarios, but face critiques on method adequacy and result communication. Despite conceptual diversity, IAMs are often criticized collectively. Six main critiques include representation of actors, technology diffusion modeling, capital markets representation, energy-economy feedbacks, policy scenarios, and interpretation and use of model results.

Water, waste, energy and food nexus in Brazil: Identifying a resource interlinkage research agenda through a systematic review

Lilia Caiado Couto, Luiza C. Campos, Warde da Fonseca-Zang, Joachim Zang, Raimund Bleischwitz

Summary: The resource nexus framework addresses interlinkages between natural resources and systems that provide water, energy, food and waste management, raising trade-offs and synergies that are rarely acknowledged. Brazil, as the world's eighth largest economy heavily reliant on natural resources, serves as a textbook case for nexus research, highlighting critical interlinkages neglected by literature. A novel method for nexus research was proposed, systematically reviewing context-specific papers and establishing resource interlinkages to identify research gaps and policy priorities.

R&D tax credits can be a significant source of taxpayer support for fossil fuel innovation

Will McDowall

Summary: The urgent need to accelerate the transition towards low-carbon energy is well understood, and government support for energy innovation is a key focus. This support includes both direct spending and indirect support through tax credits. Data shows that tax credits can be a significant source of innovation support for fossil fuel extraction companies, although this varies by country. As a result, publicly available data on direct R&D spending may underestimate government support for innovation in fossil fuel extraction.

Supportive governance for city-scale low carbon building retrofits: a case study from Shanghai

Zhongjue Yu, Yong Geng, Qi He, Lucy Oates, Andrew Sudmant, Andy Gouldson, Raimund Bleischwitz

Summary: Energy efficiency retrofits in public and commercial buildings in Shanghai have successfully achieved significant energy and emissions reductions with commercially acceptable payback periods. Subsidies from government have played a crucial role in reducing payback periods, but may also deter investment from financial institutions. The Changning Low Carbon Office has been instrumental in coordinating and supporting energy efficiency retrofitting efforts.

Challenges and opportunities for energy system modelling to foster multi-level governance of energy transitions

Leonhard Hofbauer, Will McDowall, Steve Pye

Summary: Achieving a swift energy transition for global climate goals requires coordinated action across various levels of government, and energy modelling plays a crucial role in fostering a multi-level governance system. However, current energy modelling practices often overlook the multi-level nature of energy governance, highlighting the need to embed multi-level governance throughout the modeling process to ensure effective decision support.

Mapping regional vulnerability in Europe's energy transition: development and application of an indicator to assess declining employment in four carbon-intensive industries

Will McDowall, Tobias Reinauer, Panagiotis Fragkos, Michal Miedzinski, Jennifer Cronin

Summary: Europe's transition to a low-carbon energy system will lead to significant changes in the economy, with some regions being more vulnerable than others. A study analyzes the economic vulnerability of European regions to ambitious decarbonisation scenarios, taking into account employment losses in carbon-intensive industries. The study finds that vulnerability is concentrated in regions with high employment in declining industries and weak adaptive capacity. Additionally, the results show that different transition pathways do not significantly alter regional vulnerability. The findings suggest the need for additional policy support to ensure a just transition for vulnerable regions.

Guimei Zhao, Wenxiu Li, Yong Geng, Raimund Bleischwitz

Summary: This study investigates the features of antimony flows and stocks in China from 2011 to 2020 and highlights the high supply risk and environmental pollution associated with antimony production. The majority of secondary antimony production in China comes from end-of-life lead-acid batteries and bearing gears. To ensure sustainable supply and clean production, appropriate antimony management policies need to be implemented.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.
