This study aims to review the frugal innovation literature in order to understand the main sources, theories, and overlapping concepts, as well as the input, success factors, impeding factors, and output of frugal innovations (Fls). A systematic research approach was applied in this study to synthesize the frugal innovation literature. Using a standard research review protocol, 101 relevant articles were extracted from 11 publication databases. We found that even though frugal innovation literature is in an embryonic stage there are over a dozen of definitions of it. This study analyses various definition of frugal innovation. The FI concept overlaps with a large number of other concepts, thus hindering the pace of FI research. Combining many overlapping concepts into one - frugal innovation - would help to develop frugal innovation as a well-established discipline. The theoretical development of frugal innovation discipline is still in an early stage. Hence, theory-driven studies are necessary. Fls are emerging from numerous sources as such exploring it from various levels and units of analysis are important. Fl requires a significant change in a firm's approach to innovation. It plays an important role in sustainability. Based on the analysis of the extant frugal innovation literature, this study points out research agenda. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

What determines a positive attitude towards natural food products? An expectancy theory approach

Shalini Talwar, Puneet Kaur, Sushant Kumar, Mokter Hossain, Amandeep Dhir

Summary: Natural food products are gaining popularity worldwide, but are still only favored by a relatively small segment of consumers. Factors such as health consciousness and natural content have a positive impact on consumers' attitude towards natural food products, while price barrier has a negative impact. Brand love and image barrier also moderate these associations.

Frugal innovation as a source of sustainable entrepreneurship to tackle social and environmental challenges

Muhammad Shehryar Shahid, Mokter Hossain, Subhan Shahid, Tehreem Anwar

Summary: Sustainable entrepreneurs are facing increasing challenges in achieving triple-bottom-line objectives. This study explores the use of frugal innovation as a means to foster sustainable entrepreneurship and overcome the barriers in this field. The findings demonstrate that sustainable entrepreneurship based on frugal innovation can lead to social outcomes such as female empowerment, improved quality of life, and access to affordable healthcare, as well as environmental outcomes such as sustainable products and production techniques. Additionally, sustainable entrepreneurship creates new markets and promotes inclusive growth in developing countries. The research highlights the dual purpose of sustainable entrepreneurship when combined with frugal innovation, allowing businesses to make a profit while solving societal problems.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
