As the pressure of environmental deterioration mounted in recent years, Chinese government has formulated a series of environmental policies and regulations with the intention of improving environmental quality. However, the effectiveness of these environmental regulations have not been carefully examined yet. This study for the first time investigates the effects of environmental regulations on the environmental performance. Using the city-level panel data of 283 Chinese cities for the period 2003-2010 and four indicators for environmental quality (the industrial waste water discharged, industrial SO2 emissions and industrial Soot emissions), this study employs the first-difference GMM method that could deal with potential endogeneity and allow dynamics to conduct the empirical estimations. Overall, the estimation results indicate that current environmental control measures and regulations have not achieved the desired goal of controlling and reducing pollution. Moreover, the direct impact of FDI on China's environment is negative, suggesting that there is evidence for the Pollution Heaven hypothesis. The coefficients of the interactive term of environmental regulation and foreign direct investment are estimated to be negative, which indicates that the environmental regulation is effective only when FDI is controlled for. The estimation results are basically consistent for different Chinese regions. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The inducing factors of environmental emergencies: Do environmental decentralization and regional corruption matter?

Yu Hao, Lu Xu, Yunxia Guo, Haitao Wu

Summary: Environmental emergencies can cause serious damage to ecological environment, human health, and social properties in a short period of time. Environmental decentralization can help local governments curb the occurrence of environmental emergencies, but regional corruption may weaken its effectiveness. The study found a negative impact of environmental decentralization on environmental emergencies, but this effect decreases with higher levels of corruption, and there is heterogeneity in the relationship between the two in different regions.

The role of information and communication technology on green total factor energy efficiency: Does environmental regulation work?

Yu Hao, Yunxia Guo, Haitao Wu

Summary: This study explores the impact of ICT development on GTFEE in China's 30 provincial administrative regions from 2006 to 2017, finding that ICT development plays a positive role in promoting GTFEE, which is moderated by environmental regulations. The regression results of the dynamic threshold model indicate that diverse environmental regulation intensities lead to different influences of ICT development on GTFEE, with varying impacts among different regions.

Junfeng Zhao, Jianliang Shen, Jinling Yan, Xiaodong Yang, Yu Hao, Qiying Ran

Summary: This study examines the impact of corruption and market segmentation on haze pollution. It finds that corruption has a positive effect on haze pollution and exacerbates it through market segmentation. The impact of corruption on haze pollution varies across different regions and periods. To mitigate haze pollution, policymakers should focus on improving institutional mechanisms and enhancing the synergistic effect between anti-corruption efforts and environmental governance.

Yan Xue, Caidong Jiang, Yunxia Guo, Jianmin Liu, Haitao Wu, Yu Hao

Summary: This paper evaluates the impact and mechanism of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the high-quality development of Chinese listed companies. The results show that CSR significantly promotes the improvement of corporate development quality and this effect is achieved through mechanisms such as green innovation, environmental investment, and corporate governance. Furthermore, the incentive effect of CSR on high-quality development is more pronounced in non-state-owned companies and during bull markets.

Are environmental problems a barometer of corruption in the eyes of residents? Evidence from China

Guoyao Yan, Yu Hao, Yunxia Guo, Haitao Wu

Summary: Actual environmental pollution worsens people's perception of environmental problems and government corruption, thus affecting government credibility and social stability. This study investigates the impact of environmental issues on corruption perception using panel data from a large-scale dynamics survey in China from 2014 to 2018. The empirical results reveal a significant positive linear correlation between residents' perception of environmental problems and corruption perception.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.
