Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult multipotent cells that due to their ability to homing to damaged tissues and differentiate into specialized cells, are remarkable cells in the field of regenerative medicine. It's suggested that the predominant mechanism of MSCs in tissue repair might be related to their paracrine activity. The utilization of MSCs for tissue repair is initially based on the differentiation ability of these cells; however now it has been revealed that only a small fraction of the transplanted MSCs actually fuse and survive in host tissues. Indeed, MSCs supply the microenvironment with the secretion of soluble trophic factors, survival signals and the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) such as exosome. Also, the paracrine activity of EVs could mediate the cellular communication to induce cell-differentiation/self-renewal. Recent findings suggest that EVs released by MSCs may also be critical in the physiological function of these cells. This review provides an overview of MSC-derived extracellular vesicles as a hopeful opportunity to advance novel cell-free therapy strategies that might prevail over the obstacles and risks associated with the use of native or engineered stem cells. EVs are very stable; they can pass the biological barriers without rejection and can shuttle bioactive molecules from one cell to another, causing the exchange of genetic information and reprogramming of the recipient cells. Moreover, extracellular vesicles may provide therapeutic cargo for a wide range of diseases and cancer therapy.

Summary: A new electrochemical sensor has been developed to accurately measure fentanyl by measuring its oxidation current in aqueous solutions. The study demonstrates that a glassy carbon electrode modified with a nanocomposite of multi-walled carbon nanotube, hydroxyapatite, and copper-based metal-organic framework (MWCNT-HA/Cu-H3BTC) (GCE/MWCNT-HA/Cu-H3BTC) can achieve sensitive detection of fentanyl, with excellent reproducibility and stability.

The Effects of Oxytocin on Craving, Mental Health Parameters, and Stress Hormones in Methamphetamine-Dependent Patients Undergoing Matrix Treatment Model: A Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial

Abbas Azadbakht, Mehrdad Salehi, Mohammad Reza Maracy, Hamid Reza Banafshe

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of oxytocin (OXT) on craving, mental health, and stress hormones in methamphetamine (METH)-dependent patients undergoing matrix treatment model (MTM). The results showed that OXT administration for 4 weeks significantly improved craving and depression scores, but did not have a significant effect on anxiety scores. Additionally, OXT administration significantly decreased cortisol and ACTH levels.

Examining of Heavy Metal Concentrations in Hookah Smokers

Amir Ghaderi, Amir Hossein Khoshakhlagh, Masoome Irani, Azam Ghaseminezhad, Prem Gautam, Nezam Mirzaei, Hamid Reza Banafshe, Bahador Nemati, Heshmatollah Moradpour Ghalerashidi

Summary: This study investigated the levels of heavy metals and elements in urine and blood of hookah users and non-users, as well as their clinical symptoms. Results showed significantly higher levels of lead, arsenic, and thallium in hookah users compared to non-users, along with common clinical symptoms of constipation and fatigue. These findings can guide policy development to regulate hookah smoking and prevent associated health risks.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentrations of heavy metals in smoked and non-smoked cigarette butts and assessed the associated health risks. The results showed that heavy metal concentrations were significantly higher in smoked cigarette butts compared to non-smoked ones. Nickel and cadmium in Iranian and other brands indicated potential non-carcinogenic risks, while chromium showed a potential carcinogenic risk in all brands. Continuous monitoring and regulation of cigarette ingredients are recommended.
