Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify factors associated with sustained abstinence in people experiencing severe mental illness following a smoking intervention. Results showed that participation in smoking interventions was associated with higher odds of abstinence in the medium-term, but not long-term follow-ups. Limited knowledge on the factors associated with staying quit in smokers experiencing severe mental illness was found.

Summary: Smoking rates are higher among individuals using mental health services, with high levels of nicotine dependence and heavier smoking patterns observed during the pandemic. While some individuals reported quitting smoking, smoking inequalities may have become more entrenched in this population. Efforts should be made within mental health services to address this modifiable risk factor and source of poor health outcomes.

Summary: The term severe mental illness (SMI) refers to psychiatric disorders that have the highest clinical burden and socio-economic impact on individuals and their communities. Pharmacogenomic (PGx) approaches show potential in personalizing treatment and improving outcomes for SMI, but lack of standardization and limited evidence hinder interpretation. A systematic review of literature and analysis of 42 articles suggest that PGx testing may be cost-effective in specific settings and have modest clinical benefits, but efforts are needed to improve standardization, knowledge, and guidelines in clinical practice for screening recommendations.

Summary: Smoking is highly prevalent among individuals with mental illness, and exercise interventions have shown promise as an adjunctive treatment for smoking cessation in individuals without mental illness. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise interventions for smoking cessation in people with mental illness.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) are at an increased risk of frailty. This systematic review examined the prevalence and correlates of frailty, as well as the efficacy of interventions, in this population. The findings indicate a high prevalence of frailty among individuals with SMI, with associations to physical comorbidity, cognitive deficits, falls, and mortality. However, further research is needed to develop appropriate interventions for frailty in this population.

Summary: The use of social media data, particularly from Twitter, to predict mental health outcomes has the potential to continuously monitor mental health and provide timely information. However, the quality of the underlying mental health data and the machine learning methods used are crucial for reliable results. This study reviews the current methodologies used in predicting mental health outcomes from Twitter data and highlights the need for high-quality data and improved methodologies.

Summary: This study quantified the suicide rates among people with serious mental illness (bipolar disorder, major depression, or schizophrenia). The findings showed high suicide rates, especially among individuals with major depression. Male patients were found to have a higher risk of suicide compared to females. Poisoning was the most common method of suicide. The study highlights the need for increased psychological assessment and monitoring, as well as further research on regional and age differences in suicide among this population.

Summary: This study aims to identify evidence-based smoking-cessation strategies for young adults, examine gaps in the literature, and discuss methodological issues related to smoking-cessation studies. The research found that multiple interventions have been examined, but there is no conclusive evidence about the most effective intervention for young adults. Further studies should compare the relative effectiveness of these intervention modalities.

Summary: Brain atrophy, a decrease in brain volume, is associated with cognitive health in older adults. Insufficient moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) has been linked to lower brain volume. This study found that meeting weekly MVPA recommendations helps preserve the volume of over 30 brain areas and structures in older adults. Additionally, cardiorespiratory fitness is an important predictor of brain volume preservation.

Summary: Tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells play a crucial role in local immune defense against infection and cancer progression. This study shows that chronic inflammation affects TRM activation and TRM cells present in tissues prior to tumor onset impact cancer evolution. In preclinical models, pre-existing TRM-like cells enhance immune cell recruitment, leading to tumor immune evasion and resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors. These findings highlight the importance of TRM-like activity in shaping tumor immunogenicity and influencing immunotherapy outcomes.

Summary: Engagement in recreational activities has positive impacts on the physical and mental health of individuals with mental health conditions. The study explores the impact of recreational-based volunteering, specifically parkrun, on the health, social, and wellbeing of individuals with mental health conditions. Results show that participating in both running/walking and volunteering at parkrun leads to a stronger sense of community and facilitates meeting new people compared to solely participating in running/walking. These findings highlight the importance of the volunteer aspect in recreational activities for individuals' recovery and well-being.

Summary: Observational studies suggest that physical activity can reduce the risk of mental health and substance use disorders. The bidirectional causal relationship of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with various mental health and substance use disorders was investigated using two-sample Mendelian Randomisation. The results indicated that physical activity was associated with a lower risk of depression and cigarette smoking, while sedentary behaviour decreased the risk of anorexia and schizophrenia.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to explore gender differences in the associations between childhood adversity subtypes and psychiatric symptoms in the general population. The results showed that overall childhood adversity was significantly associated with overall psychopathology, regardless of gender. However, differential associations were found between specific types of childhood adversity and symptom manifestation, with abuse being particularly associated with psychopathology in women and neglect being associated with psychopathology in men.

Summary: This study investigated the factors associated with the recording of HbA1c in individuals with first diagnoses of serious mental illness (SMI) and the factors associated with HbA1c levels when recorded. The study found a relatively low level of HbA1c recording, though it has increased over time, and text extraction has improved diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, it is important to improve routine monitoring of dysglycaemia in these high-risk disorders.
