Summary: In this study, a new exo-alginate lyase named Alys1 with high activity was cloned from a marine strain, showing cold-adapted characteristics and efficient degradation of alginates at low temperatures. Alys1 can depolymerize alginates polyM and polyG, producing monosaccharides as minimal alginate oligosaccharides, and demonstrates bifunctionality with a preference for M over G. These properties make Alys1 a valuable candidate for both basic research and industrial applications.

Summary: In this study, the combined use of 3% alginate lyase and 3% cellulose in a 1:6 feed ratio resulted in the maximum saccharification yield of Sargassum horneri biomass, producing 20.83 g/L glucose and 1.73 g/L mannitol. The crude S. horneri hydrolysate (pH 3.0) was found to be suitable for erythritol production by Yarrowia lipolytica strain, achieving a concentration of 18.42 g/L and a yield of 0.82 g/g after fermentation in a 10-L fermenter for 60 hours. The proposed strategy demonstrates the feasibility of converting invasive Sargassum into high-value chemicals for the first time.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
