Higher levels of lycopene, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, folate, and vitamin E were associated with reduced ulcerative colitis risk, while higher levels of calcium and magnesium were associated with increased risk.

Summary: Patients with longstanding inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are at high risk of developing intestinal cancers. This study found significant differences between intestinal cancers associated with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease-associated cancers were diagnosed at more advanced stages, detected less frequently by surveillance, and had a poorer prognosis compared to those associated with ulcerative colitis.

Differences in IgA O- and N-glycosylation between patient groups were found to be associated with the diseases, and a statistical model was constructed to predict the disease group of the patients. These findings contribute to the development of noninvasive biomarkers for IBD and improvement in patient care.

Low-to medium-level RASs were found to persist over time, while high-level resistant RASs gradually disappeared. Different patterns of RAS persistence according to HCV subtype could have implications for retreatment with first-generation DAAs and for global HCV elimination goals.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common movement disorder, and mutations in the GBA1 gene are the most common genetic risk factor for PD. PD-GBA1 is distinct from idiopathic PD in terms of age of onset, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive impairment. This study found differences in DNA methylation levels of the SNCA gene between PD-GBA1 and idiopathic PD, suggesting the existence of different genetic subtypes within PD.

Summary: Microglia are heterogenous cells in the nervous system that have distinct populations contributing to specific processes, including neuroprotection. Our study found that male microglia tend to have a more pro-inflammatory phenotype, while female microglia are more sensitive to glucocerebrosidase inhibition. Furthermore, glucocerebrosidase inhibition impaired the ability of female microglia to enhance the Nrf2-dependent detoxification pathway in neurons.

Summary: This study aimed to identify lifestyle factors that affect the onset of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The results showed that patients with inflammatory bowel disease were less likely to engage in regular physical activity during childhood and early adulthood compared to the control group. There was no significant association between intake of refined sugar and the onset of inflammatory bowel disease. Patients with Crohn's disease had a higher rate of overweight during childhood compared to ulcerative colitis and the control group. The study highlights the relevance of environmental factors in the development of inflammatory bowel disease and suggests a protective effect of physical activity on its onset.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE assessed by the Canon Aplio i800 ultrasound system in liver fibrosis and compared it with traditional liver histology and transient elastography (TE). The results showed that 2D-SWE had good to excellent performance in diagnosing significant fibrosis, severe fibrosis, and cirrhosis, and its accuracy was comparable to TE. Therefore, the 2D-SWE system has a promising potential in the diagnostic workup of chronic liver disease.

Summary: This study found that AXL is expressed on tissue macrophages in patients with cirrhosis, but not on tissue-infiltrating liver macrophages, hepatocytes, and sinusoidal endothelial cells. The expression of AXL decreases significantly with cirrhosis progression and is negatively correlated with liver function and C-reactive protein. AXL-expressing liver macrophages show high expression of CD68, HLA-DR, CD16, and CD206. Additionally, AXL expression decreases on gut and peritoneal macrophages in cirrhotic patients but increases in regional lymph nodes. These findings suggest an important role for AXL in the regulation of hepatic immune homeostasis.
