This research presents a WSN computer system model applied to precision irrigation, specifically for conditions in which sensor nodes may be located far from the coordinator. The proposed model is based on a tailored hardware and software aiming to extend both sensor nodes and WSN lifetime. The coordinator is aware of its sensor nodes' available energy and such feature enables estimating the remaining lifetime of each sensor node. The so-called Sensor nOdes' system for data acqUisition of Long range (SOUL) is the conceptual model for a sensor node hardware and software system design, concerning energy management and messages grouping, improving both sensor nodes and network lifetime. The sensor nodes were employed to monitor soil moisture and thus the SOUL computer system model was validated in field conditions. Sensor nodes lifetime was increased by 5.7 times when compared with a conventional use.

Performance of models to determine flow rate using orifice plates

Nicolas D. Cano, Antonio P. de Camargo, Gustavo L. Muniz, Jonesmar de Oliveira, Jose G. Dalfre Filho, Jose A. Frizzone

Summary: This study evaluates three methodologies for orifice-plate water-flow estimation, quantifying errors in flow determinations to propose appropriate measurement ranges for each condition. The Reader-Harris/Gallagher equation adequately estimates the discharge coefficient, while empirical equations demonstrate smaller measurement errors and greater rangeability of flow meters.

Discharge sensitivity of collapsible drip tapes to water temperature

Ana C. S. de Araujo, Jose A. Frizzone, Antonio P. de Camargo, Diego J. de S. Pereira, Veronica G. M. L. de Melo, Wagner W. A. Bombardelli

Summary: This study quantified the impact of water temperature variations on the discharge of collapsible thin-walled drip tapes with integrated non-pressure-compensating emitters. Different emitter models showed varying responses to temperature changes, with some seeing an increase in discharge while others experienced a decrease, with the greatest variations occurring at certain pressure ranges. Wall thickness did not have a significant effect on discharge variation.

Evaluation of Minor Losses in Connectors Used in Microirrigation Subunits Using Machine Learning Techniques

Wagner W. A. Bombardelli, Antonio P. Camargo, Luiz H. A. Rodrigues, Jose A. Frizzone

Summary: The study developed machine learning models to predict minor losses caused by fittings commonly used in microirrigation subunits, with the multilayer perceptron (MLP) model showing the best performance. These models can be used and compared through an open-source web application, serving as an online tool for designing and simulating minor losses.

Extreme values of ET0 at Piracicaba, Brazil, for designing irrigation systems

Veronica G. M. L. de Melo, Jose A. Frizzone, Leonardo L. de Melo, Antonio P. de Camargo

Summary: Irrigation system capacity should not be solely determined by average or maximum values, but should also consider expected lifespan, irrigation interval, and frequency distribution of maximum ET0 values.

Learning Lessons From the Scrum Adoption in the Brazilian Air Force

Fernando Rodrigues de Sa, Ricardo Godoi Vieira, Adilson Marques da Cunha

Summary: This article discusses the experience of implementing Scrum in a hierarchical organization, specifically the Brazilian Air Force. Despite the apparent conflict between Scrum teams and military groups, the key to success was the support from the institution and the valuable teachings from military pilots. The main contribution of this article is the lessons learned that can inspire other organizations to adopt Scrum and Agile practices. The ultimate goal is to make the Brazilian Aeronautics Computing Center a reference in Agile Methods within the Brazilian Air Force.

Automated Barometric Chamber for Entomology Experiments: Arthropods' Behavior and Insect-Plant Interactions

Camila M. Costa, Antonio P. Camargo, Eric Alberto da Silva, Jose Mauricio S. Bento

Summary: An automated barometric chamber was designed for researching arthropod behaviors and insect-plant interactions in the laboratory. By changing the barometric pressure, researchers can observe the characteristics of arthropod and plant growth, behavior, and interactions. The control system ensures a stable barometric pressure and two experiments demonstrated the impact of barometric pressure on insect feeding activity.

Influence of suspended solid particles on calcium carbonate fouling in dripper labyrinths

Gustavo L. Muniz, Antonio P. Camargo, Filipe Signorelli, Celso A. Bertran, Diego J. S. Pereira, Jose A. Frizzone

Summary: This study investigates the fouling process of calcium carbonate in dripper prototypes in the presence and absence of suspended solid particles (SSP). The presence of SSP reduces the fouling of the labyrinth walls and changes the crystal habit of CaCO3. One type of prototype is resistant to clogging while the other is prone to clogging.

Dripper clogging by soil particles entering lateral lines directly during irrigation network assembly in the field

Marcos Antonio Correa Matos do Amaral, Rubens Duarte Coelho, Jefferson de Oliveira Costa, Diego Jose de Sousa Pereira, Antonio Pires de Camargo

Summary: Emitter clogging is a common problem in drip irrigation systems, which can be caused by physical, chemical, or biological factors. Research shows that pulses of soil particles are one of the main causes of clogging, and the discharge from the emitters, particle size, concentration of contaminants, and orientation of installation all have an impact on clogging.

Risk Evaluation of Chemical Clogging of Irrigation Emitters via Geostatistics and Multivariate Analysis in the Northern Region of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Gustavo Lopes Muniz, Agda Loureiro Goncalves Oliveira, Maria Geralda Benedito, Nicolas Duarte Cano, Antonio Pires de Camargo, Ariovaldo Jose da Silva

Summary: In this study, the hydrogeochemistry of 350 underground wells in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, was analyzed to identify the water-chemical parameters contributing to emitter clogging in drip irrigation systems. Risk assessment maps were generated for each parameter and the area was classified into different water-use restriction levels. Interpolation methods and multivariate analysis were employed to analyze the data. The results revealed strong correlations between pH and various chemical parameters and identified three possible mechanisms contributing to emitter clogging in the study area.
