Low macroinvertebrate biomass suggests limited food availability for shorebird communities in intertidal areas of the Bijagos archipelago (Guinea-Bissau)

Knowledge of the macrozoobenthic community and its interactions with predators is critical for understanding intertidal ecosystems but this information is still lacking for many tropical sites. We core-sampled three intertidal areas in the Bijagos archipelago, Guinea-Bissau, one of the largest intertidal wetlands in West Africa, to evaluate macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity, investigate ecological variables influencing macroinvertebrate distribution, and estimate food availability for several shorebird species. We found a low macroinvertebrate biomass, which mostly consisted of bivalves and polychaetes. The fiddler crab Afruca tangeri was also among the more abundant species. Both Shannon diversity and rarefied species richness indicate macrozoobenthic communities in the Bijagos have low diversity but there is large variation in species composition among sites. Sediment fine fraction, organic content and distance to the coast were correlated with the abundance of several macroinvertebrate taxa. Harvestable biomass for the shorebird species studied was very low, below the values described for intertidal sites in temperate areas and some other sites in the tropics. Although this fits with low shorebird densities in the Bijagos, it also suggests that wintering shorebird communities must depend on secondary production by macrobenthic invertebrates during the winter, in the same way as has been proposed for other tropical intertidal systems.

Stopover use of a large estuarine wetland by dunlins during spring and autumn migrations: Linking local refuelling conditions to migratory strategies

Summary: Migratory strategies play a crucial role in stopover ecology. This study compared refuelling rates and physiological state in spring and autumn dunlin migrants, and found similar refuelling rates and physiological status between the two seasons. However, early autumn migrants showed enhanced refuelling rates and blood oxygen-carrying capacity. The study contributes to our understanding of stopover ecology in migratory shorebirds and highlights the importance of the Tagus estuary as a high-quality stopover site.

Trace elements in relation to trophic ecology of long-distance migratory shorebirds and seabirds in West Africa

Summary: Shorebirds and seabirds are used as bioindicators of environmental contamination in marine ecosystems. A study in the Bijagós Archipelago found low exposure of these birds to toxic elements, except for mercury. There were differences in trace element concentrations between trophic guilds, with different elements higher in pelagic fish consumers (seabirds) and benthic invertebrate consumers (shorebirds). Although there is currently no toxicological risk to these bird populations, further monitoring of high mercury burdens is recommended.

Heat stress increases risk taking in foraging shorebirds

Summary: Animals often face trade-offs between food acquisition and predation/disturbance avoidance. However, the impact of modulating factors such as thermal risk and foraging opportunities on this trade-off has been largely disregarded. In this study, we investigated the influence of temporal and environmental gradients on the flight initiation distance (FID) and escape mode in shorebirds, and found that heat-stressed shorebirds take greater risks and adjust risk-taking behavior according to tidal and seasonal cycles.

Trophic ecology of a migratory shorebird community at a globally important non-breeding site: combining DNA metabarcoding and conventional techniques

Summary: Detailed studies on the diet of whole-bird communities are lacking, but they are essential for understanding community structure and species persistence in ecosystems. We studied the diet of a shorebird community in the Bijagos Archipelago, West Africa using molecular and morphological prey identification. Our results showed that shorebirds consumed a high diversity of prey, especially highly mobile prey like crustaceans and fish, which are typically overlooked in shorebird studies. Our study highlights the importance of reducing competition through diverse prey consumption in a key non-breeding area for migratory shorebirds.

Summary: The Bijagos Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau is one of the largest and most important coastal intertidal ecosystems in West Africa, supporting a significant proportion of migratory shorebirds and serving as a nursery area for benthic fish. This study investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of macrozoobenthos density, biomass, and community composition across six intertidal flats in three islands of the archipelago. Results showed variations in density, biomass, and community composition across sites and months, with higher density observed towards the end of the dry season.

Global changes in coastal wetlands of importance for non-breeding shorebirds

Current studies have geographical bias, but remote sensing can provide a standardized approach to analyze the changes in shorebird habitats. This study used remote sensing data to analyze the changes in IBAs over the past two decades, revealing significant losses of tidal flats and expansion of marshland and urban areas.

Contrasting patterns of population structure of Bulwer's petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) between oceans revealed by statistical phylogeography

Summary: This study provides the first description of the phylogeographic patterns and historical demography of Bulwer's petrel, as well as insights into the drivers of species diversification in the marine environment. Three highly differentiated groups were identified, including the Western Pacific, Central Pacific, and Atlantic populations. The Isthmus of Panama restricts gene flow between oceans, but the deepest phylogeographic break occurs within the Pacific Ocean, where oceanographic barriers play a key role in driving and maintaining the remarkable structure found in this highly mobile seabird.

Summary: Plastic pollution and vulnerable marine organisms have uneven distributions. This study combines plastic density estimates and bird movement data to estimate exposure risk. The Mediterranean, Black seas, northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic, and southwest Indian oceans are high-risk areas. Threatened species have disproportionately high exposure risk. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones of the USA, Japan, and the UK have the highest exposure risk. International collaboration is crucial for addressing marine plastic impacts.
