Summary: The study demonstrates the successful construction of SHIVs with bulky aromatic substitutions at residue 375, allowing efficient replication in rhesus macaques and effective transmission across rectal, vaginal, penile, oral, or intravenous routes. These SHIVs can serve as a model for HIV-1 infection studies in preclinical monkey trials.

Summary: The main risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva (SCCC) among people with HIV (PWH) in South Africa are immunodeficiency and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The incidence rate of SCCC decreased between 2004 and 2014, and PWH residing within latitudes 30°S to 34°S had a lower SCCC risk. Other risk factors for SCCC were lower CD4 counts and middle age, while there was no evidence for an association of sex or settlement type with SCCC risk.

Summary: The identification of differentially expressed proteins in the plasma of patients with AIDS-NHL may lead to the development of biomarkers for screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Immunoglobulin and complement components were found to be common proteins in this study. These proteins play a role in the pathogenesis of AIDS-NHL.

Summary: The first reported case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) was in 1984, with increasing number of patients diagnosed with HIV despite proper medical care. Surveillance of HIV in KSA faces challenges, with the need for targeted treatment and preventive strategies to control HIV co-infections. The progress towards meeting WHO 90-90-90 goals for HIV is not systematically monitored, with differences in common co-infections and the need for new resilient methods of treatment and preventive measures.

Summary: This study examined the cancer incidence and risk among HIV-infected individuals in Korea compared to the general population. The findings showed an increased risk of cancer, particularly AIDS-defining and virus-related cancers, in people with HIV. Efforts to improve cancer prevention, screening, and healthcare accessibility for HIV-infected individuals are necessary.

Summary: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is an endemic systemic mycosis in Latin America, and when it occurs in individuals with immunosuppressive conditions, it can present as an opportunistic disease. A study conducted in a Brazilian reference center found a low occurrence of PCM in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), but PCM diagnosis helped identify HIV infection in some atypical and severe cases. Therefore, HIV investigation is recommended in PCM patients.

Summary: People living with HIV are at a higher risk of sarcopenia, which can significantly impact their quality of life and ultimately lead to death. This systematic review explored the prevalence of sarcopenia in this population and identified several factors associated with its development. The findings indicate that age, gender, time since HIV diagnosis, vertebral fractures, drug use, and gamma-glutamyl transferase level are promoting factors, while higher education, employment, physical exercise, calf circumference, and gait speed are protective factors against sarcopenia.

Summary: The link between obesity and the severity of COVID-19 is emphasized by accumulating data. Obesity affects multiple components of the immune system, leading to a reduced defense against harmful microorganisms. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 takes advantage of the weakened immune system in obese individuals, precipitating COVID-19 and, in some cases, death. Therefore, obesity should be regarded as another form of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and treated seriously. Unlike AIDS caused by HIV, obesity is a comorbidity-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is important to recognize obesity as a risk factor for COVID-19 mortality. Obesity is a modifiable condition, and lifestyle modifications can reverse it. Strong public health actions are needed to promote lifestyle measures and reduce the burden of overweight and obesity, which currently affect more than one-third of the global population and are projected to increase to 55-80% in the next thirty years.

Summary: Severe mycobacterial IRIS in HIV can cause secondary HLH driven by pathologic IFN gamma production and T-cell activation, leading to worse outcomes. Increased ferritin, anemia, CXCL9, and sCD25 associate with this phenotype and may be used for risk stratification and treatment optimization.
