Summary: Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) have shown great potential in pharmaceutical applications, including the development of active pharmaceutical ingredient delivery systems, enzyme inhibition, adsorption, and DNA precipitation. By combining different starch sources and methods, SNPs demonstrate remarkable diversity in pharmaceutical applications. Future studies should focus on the safety of SNPs and provide information on variables that may affect their important properties.

Summary: Smart healthcare systems have the potential to benefit older adults by improving their daily lives and providing medical services. However, ethical issues in these systems have not been thoroughly examined, with most research focusing on technical aspects. This study used a scoping review to analyze ethical issues in smart healthcare for older adults, including responsibility/autonomy, privacy, and the digital divide. It highlights the need for future development and application of smart healthcare systems to consider these ethical aspects and engage in critical discussions to customize ethical requirements based on specific user needs.

Summary: This study reviews the physical therapy techniques used in horses over the past 20 years, with exercise, electrotherapy, and hydrotherapy being the most frequently reported methods. However, there is a lack of detailed information on the application and outcomes of these techniques in clinical cases. Further research is needed to better understand the types of interventions, parameterization, and outcomes of equine rehabilitation in clinical practice.

Summary: Phyllodes tumors are rare breast tumors with various guidelines on management. Preoperative diagnostics include ultrasound, MRI, and core needle biopsy. Surgical margins depend on grade, adjuvant radiation is useful for local recurrence, and there is no evidence supporting adjuvant chemotherapy for phyllodes tumors. Surveillance protocols vary in the literature.

Summary: A scoping review of existing US-based interventions to improve CRC screening was conducted, revealing a positive impact on screening effectiveness. Projects with more components, patient navigation, and free/low-cost testing had greater effects on screening rates. Therefore, organizations implementing CRC screening programs should consider both intervention components and relevant program materials.

Summary: The use of germline genetic testing is increasing among cancer patients due to the availability of multigene panel tests, decreased costs, and improved insurance coverage. The US Food and Drug Administration's approval of genotype-directed therapies also contributes to this trend. Additionally, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network has endorsed germline genetic testing for certain cancer types. This article debates the advantages and disadvantages of offering germline multigene panel testing to all patients diagnosed with any GI cancer.

Summary: Translational and clinical research has shown that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Blood-based biomarkers, such as cytokines and interleukins, have been studied as indicators of neuroinflammation in AD. However, inconsistent results have been reported due to lack of standardization. This study used machine-learning and statistical analysis to explore the impact of age, sex, and APOE genotype on cytokines. The results showed sex differences in IL12 and an APOE-related difference in IL10, with IL1 beta being significantly associated with MCI-to-dementia conversion. Further clinical research is needed to understand the role of plasma cytokines in neuroimmune and inflammatory dynamics in AD.

Summary: Genetic counselors play an important role in research teams and are seeking additional opportunities for research training. Therefore, a grant was obtained to develop an undergraduate minor in genomics and human health, promote a research program for genetic counselors, and initiate a combined PhD program in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology, and Genetics with a track in genetic counseling. Early progress has been made in each component and the aim is to replicate this program at other sites.
