Lodging stress significantly reduces the grain yield and quality. Uniconazole is a plant growth regulator and it can potentially reduce lodging stress by enhancing lignin metabolism and lodging resistance. We conducted a field study in the semiarid regions of China to determine suitable uniconazole application strategies based on the culm morphological characteristics, rind penetration strength, lignin metabolism, lodging stress, and grain yield from summer maize during 2015 and 2016. Seeds were soaked in uniconazole at concentrations of 0 (SCK0), 25 (SU25), 50 (SU50) and 75 (SU75) mg kg(-1). In another experiment, uniconazole was applied to the foliage at concentrations of 0 (FCK0), 25 (FU25), 50 (FU50) and 75 (FU75) mg L-1 at the eight-leaf stage. Our results suggested that uniconazole significantly alleviated lodging stress by enhancing lignin metabolism and optimizing the culm morphological characteristics. Uniconazole significantly increased the lignin content and activities of lignin-related enzymes such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, tyrosine ammonia-lyase, and peroxidase, where their maximum values were obtained with SU25 and FU25 treatments. The grain yield and ear characteristics increased but then decreased as the uniconazole concentration increased, where treatments SU25 and FU25 obtained the highest grain yield and ear characteristics. Seed soaking significantly enhanced lignin accumulation and alleviated lodging stress compared with foliar application. Our results suggest that the lignin content is closely related to lodging resistance in maize and higher lignin accumulation in the third basal internode can improve lodging resistance. Uniconazole application significantly reduced the risk of lodging stress and improved the grain yield of maize, where the most effective treatments were soaking seeds at 25 mg kg(-1) and foliar application of 25 mg L-1 at the eight-leaf stage.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the role of gut microbiota in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction (ED). Gut microbiota modifications can affect prostate health through immune system activation and the production of proinflammatory cytokines, while they can also contribute to the onset of ED by altering hormone levels and metabolic profiles.

Effects of nitrogen and water stress on the rehydration, endogenous hormonal regulation and yield of maize

Yu Xin Chi, Shakeel Ahmad, Ke Jun Yang, Jian Fu, Li Yang, Xun Bo Zhou, Hong De Zhu

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of rehydration treatments on the growth and yield of maize under water and nitrogen stress. The results showed that the application of nitrogen fertilizer significantly improved leaf moisture status and affected plant hormones, photosynthetic pigments, and chlorophyll fluorescence. Additionally, with longer rehydration time, these indicators showed an increasing trend. Therefore, rehydration treatments can significantly enhance the growth and yield of maize in the cold semi-arid region.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the role of procalcitonin (PCT) as a prognostic factor in Fournier's Gangrene (FG). By retrospectively reviewing the medical records of 20 male FG patients, it was found that elevated PCT levels were associated with increased overall mortality risk. Additionally, a Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score > 2, Streptococcical etiology, and FGSI score >9 were also associated with unfavorable outcome.

Co-application of chitooligosaccharides and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi reduced greenhouse gas fluxes in saline soil by improving the rhizosphere microecology of soybean

Junqing Ma, Yi Xie, Jiali Sun, Ping Zou, Siqi Ma, Yuan Yuan, Shakeel Ahmad, Xia Yang, Changliang Jing, Yiqiang Li

Summary: Soil salinization affects soil ecology and greenhouse gas emissions. Chitooligosaccharides and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can reduce GHG fluxes in salinized soil by altering rhizosphere microecology. Certain bacterial species are highly correlated with GHG emissions, and foliar spraying of chitooligosaccharides enhances soybean tolerance to salt stress. The co-application of chitooligosaccharides and Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi has a greater effect than their individual application.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate predictors of Proficiency score (PS) achievement in robot-assisted radical prostatectomies (RARP) performed by trainee surgeons with two different surgical techniques. The results showed significant differences in operative time, positive surgical margins, nerve-sparing procedures, and learning curve time between the two groups. PS, continence status, potency, biochemical recurrence, and 1-year trifecta rates were comparable. Multivariable analysis identified time from learning curve starting >= 12 months and a nerve-sparing intent as independent predictors of PS score achievement.

Summary: The worldwide prevalence of uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections (uUTIs) caused by multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli is increasing. Fosfomycin trometamol (FT) is recommended as a viable alternative to fluoroquinolones for the treatment of uUTIs and prevention of infectious complications after prostate biopsy. The safety and effectiveness of a single oral dose of FT are similar to that of longer treatment schedules with other drugs.

Summary: Drought is a pressing issue worldwide, and selecting wheat genotypes adapted to changing climatic conditions is crucial. This study evaluated 156 bread wheat genotypes, including landraces and modern varieties, under different drought treatments. The results showed that landraces had higher yield stability and protein content under drought stress, suggesting their potential for developing drought-tolerant modern wheat varieties. Effective utilization of landraces in breeding programs is important for developing climate-resilient wheat varieties.
