This paper deals with R&D investment and technology licensing in a supply chain formed of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and a contract manufacturer (CM). The R&D is conducted by the CM and the OEM agrees to pay a share of the cost. At the R&D stage, we assume that there are some uncertainties both in terms of performance of the developed technology and market uncertainties. These uncertainties are resolved in the sales stage, as technology matures and information about consumers' preferences become available. Further, the OEM can license the technology to a third party and share the revenues with the CM. We characterize equilibrium pricing and licensing strategies in two scenarios, namely, the licensing decision is made before or after the uncertainties are resolved. A comparison of the two equilibria indicates that the OEM is indifferent between making the licensing decision in the first or the second stage in most cases. But when the market potential, competition intensity, royalty rate and revenue sharing rate are moderate, there exists a small region in the parameter space where the OEM prefers to make the licensing decision in Stage 2. Interestingly, we obtain that for a large region of the parameter space, the two partners have the same preferences in terms of licensing. It is also found that different probability distribution of stochastic technology efficiency results in different licensing strategies. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Implications of economies of scale and scope for round-trip shipping canvassing with empty container repositioning

Zhuzhu Song, Wansheng Tang, Ruiqing Zhao

Summary: The repositioning of empty containers from surplus to shortage areas results in economies of scope for transportation services. The liner company should focus on fewer forwarders while the forwarders should expand service scope. The order of canvassing routes with low potential market demand may not necessarily be optimal for the liner company.

Consumer showrooming with supplier encroachment and omnichannel retailing

Shichen Zhang, Yao Yao, Jianxiong Zhang

Summary: This study explores the effects of consumer showrooming on supplier encroachment and retailer omnichannel retailing. The results show that both the supplier and the retailer can benefit from showrooming when the consumers' hassle costs and the retailer's additional revenue are at an intermediate level. However, the retailer's omnichannel strategy may limit this win-win range.

Accounting for consumers' environmental concern in supply chain contracts

Fanjun Yao, Elena Parilina, Georges Zaccour, Hongwei Gao

Summary: This paper explores the impact of consumers' environmental concern on the strategies and outcomes of a supply chain. Taking a supply chain perspective instead of a single-firm one is more realistic since the retailer has a direct influence on sales through pricing policy. Therefore, the contractual arrangement in the supply chain becomes an important issue.

Large satellite constellations and space debris: Exploratory analysis of strategic management of the space commons

Pierre Bernhard, Marc Deschamps, Georges Zaccour

Summary: The use of satellite technology has become increasingly important for nations, companies, and individuals. However, since the first satellite was launched in 1957, space has been polluted with debris, especially in low orbits. The current situation is concerning, with frequent collision risk alerts and avoidance maneuvers by satellites and the International Space Station. The introduction of mega-constellations of satellites has further exacerbated these problems. This paper provides an economic analysis to balance the size of satellite constellations with the cost of preserving the space environment, aiming to contribute to the sustainable development of the space economy.

Managing quality and pricing during a product recall: An analysis of pre-crisis, crisis and post-crisis regimes

Arka Mukherjee, Margarida Carvalho, Georges Zaccour

Summary: Product recalls are often a result of quality failures, but these crises are usually temporary and the affected firm can eventually recover. The decisions and profits of the manufacturer are influenced by stochastic parameters such as crisis likelihood, recovery likelihood, crisis impact, and recovery intensity. Additionally, myopic firms are more severely affected by a product recall than farsighted firms, especially when the impact of the recall is high.

Great fish war with moratorium

Ilyass Dahmouni, Elena M. Parilina, Georges Zaccour

Summary: We study a discrete-time fish war model with a moratorium on fishing activities when the fish stock reaches a critical low value. The moratorium is in place until the stock recovers to a desirable level. We determine conditions for avoiding the moratorium and find the optimal duration when it is necessary. When players cannot avoid the moratorium, we propose a moratorium-free strategy profile that matches the Nash equilibrium in linear-state strategies under certain conditions. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate our findings.

Subsidies and pricing strategies in a vehicle scrappage program with strategic consumers

Hosain Zaman, Georges Zaccour

Summary: We analyze the government's vehicle scrappage program and the strategic behavior of manufacturers in response to increased consumer willingness to pay. In a two-period game, we determine equilibrium prices and subsidy levels. Our findings show that prices increase over time and are higher with the subsidy compared to the benchmark case. Moreover, if consumers act strategically, equilibrium prices will be higher than if they behave myopically.

Remanufacturing with innovative features: A strategic analysis

Can Baris Cetin, Georges Zaccour

Summary: In this study, the best remanufacturing strategy for OEM and IR in an innovative industry is investigated, taking into account the consumer valuation of products and the level of innovation. The research focuses on including innovative features in remanufactured products instead of passively carrying over product quality. Three remanufacturing strategies are considered: not remanufacturing, remanufacturing without adding innovative features, and remanufacturing with upgrades. The impact of competition and remanufacturing strategy on firms' environmental impact and consumer surplus is analyzed.

Feedback Nash Equilibria in Differential Games With Impulse Control

Utsav Sadana, Puduru Viswanadha Reddy, Georges Zaccour

Summary: In this article, we study a class of deterministic finite-horizon two-player nonzero-sum differential games where players are endowed with different kinds of controls. We seek to derive conditions for the existence of feedback Nash equilibrium strategies for the players and provide a verification theorem for identifying such equilibrium strategies. Furthermore, we specialize the obtained results in a scalar two-player linear-quadratic differential game with impulse control and provide an analytical characterization of the feedback Nash equilibrium for the first time.

A branch-and-cut algorithm for the connected max- k-cut problem

Patrick Healy, Nicolas Jozefowiez, Pierre Laroche, Franc Marchetti, Sebastien Martin, Zsuzsanna Roka

Summary: The Connected Max-k-Cut Problem is an extension of the well-known Max-Cut Problem, where the objective is to partition a graph into k connected subgraphs by maximizing the cost of inter-partition edges. The researchers propose a new integer linear program and a branch-and-cut algorithm for this problem, and also use graph isomorphism to structure the instances and facilitate their resolution. Extensive computational experiments show that, if k > 2, their approach outperforms existing algorithms in terms of quality.

An effective hybrid evolutionary algorithm for the clustered orienteering problem

Qinghua Wu, Mu He, Jin-Kao Hao, Yongliang Lu

Summary: This paper studies a variant of the orienteering problem known as the clustered orienteering problem. In this problem, customers are grouped into clusters and a profit is associated with each cluster, collected only when all customers in the cluster are served. The proposed evolutionary algorithm, incorporating a backbone-based crossover operator and a destroy-and-repair mutation operator, outperforms existing algorithms on benchmark instances and sets new records on some instances. It also demonstrates scalability on large instances and has shown superiority over three state-of-the-art COP algorithms. The algorithm is also successfully applied to a dynamic version of the COP considering stochastic travel time.
