In this study, we explore the determinants of forest enterprises' timber storage accumulation after severe storm events. The explanatory power of variables reflecting economic, institutional and tree species-related factors is tested via econometric analyses. Timber storage accumulation is assessed conducting a weighted multiple linear regression analysis. In addition, the moderating effect of timber price alterations on timber storage accumulation is tested employing timber price alterations as a moderator variable in a hierarchical regression analysis. The results show a linear positive relation between forest enterprises' damaged and stored timber quantities. It was found that coniferous timber was stored to a greater extent than non-coniferous timber which can be explained by higher storm damage as well as better suitability for multiyear storage. State forestry stored the highest shares of damaged timber, followed by municipal and private forest enterprises, which can be explained as a countervailing measure. A further central finding of our study is that the timber price drops after storm events act as a moderator variable on the relation between damaged and stored timber quantities. Hence, empirical timber price reactions help to improve estimation accuracy regarding the shares of damaged timber which are stored. Derived from our results, we find timber storage accumulation to be a common practice by forest companies to mitigate revenue losses caused by extreme storm events. As coefficients vary strongly among the analyzed variables' categories, we consider case-specific storage accumulation estimations to be crucial for improving the accuracy of national wood and timber accounting, but also for a full view on storm-related economic damage in the forest sector. In addition, it is likely that capturing the proportions of timber storage in forests will gain relevance in the future, since forest damage from natural disturbances is expected to increase as a consequence of climate change.

Exploring controls of timber stock residence times in storage after severe storm events

Klaus Zimmermann, Tobias Schuetz, Holger Weimar, Matthias Dieter

Summary: The study explores the controls of coniferous timber stocks residence times in storage after severe storm events using forest accounting database. Factors such as market price dynamics, species groups, ownership categories and forest worker capacities were found to be significant controls for mean residence times of timber stock in storage. Stronger timber price falls were correlated with shorter mean residence times of timber stocks in storage, related to liquidity maintenance of forest enterprises.

Estimating supply and demand elasticities of dissolving pulp, lignocellulose-based chemical derivatives and textile fibres in an emerging forest-based bioeconomy

Franziska Schier, Christian Morland, Matthias Dieter, Holger Weimar

Summary: In this study, the market behavior of emerging forest products based on lignocellulose and their response to main economic drivers were investigated. The global market elasticities for dissolving pulp, cellulose-based chemical derivatives, and textile fibers were computed. Structural changes in the data were observed from 1992 to 2015, leading to the division of the timeline into three sub-periods for elasticity estimation. The price elasticities of dissolving pulp showed significant fluctuations over time, while the elasticities of cellulose-based derivatives and textile fibers did not exhibit a clear trend towards more elastic or inelastic coefficients.

Summary: A new method was developed to determine enzymatic parameters without biofilm disintegration, using beads made of different mineral materials in aquatic environments. Enzyme activities and kinetics were determined based on fluorometric detection of reaction products, with ceramic bead biofilms showing higher enzymatic activities and higher standard deviations compared to sintered glass bead biofilms.

Summary: Germany emphasizes the development of the bioeconomy, especially in the sustainable management of renewable resources. This study calculated and described the biomass flows of production and use in the German bioeconomy in 2015, showing that agricultural biomass is mainly used for food and feed, biogenic residues and waste are mostly utilized by the energy sector, and forest-produced woody biomass is primarily used as solid fuel.

Assessment of Possible Production Leakage from Implementing the EU Biodiversity Strategy on Forest Product Markets

Franziska Schier, Susanne Iost, Bjoern Seintsch, Holger Weimar, Matthias Dieter

Summary: The EU Biodiversity Strategy aims to restore biodiversity by protecting nature in the European Union. Implementing the strategy will lead to a decrease in EU roundwood production and impact the production and trade of wood-based products. However, the apparent consumption of wood-based products remains stable. Globally, the EU roundwood production deficit is partly compensated by non-EU countries, but the remaining deficit is not produced and consumed.

An evidence and gap map of the environmental Kuznets curve and the forest transition hypothesis for estimating forest area development

Julia Tandetzki, Franziska Schier, Margret Koethke, Holger Weimar

Summary: Understanding the relationship between forest area development and socio-economic dynamics is crucial for forest conservation. Statistical models can provide valuable insights in analyzing this relationship. This study provides a systematic overview of two prominent concepts, the forest transition hypothesis (FTH) and the environmental Kuznets curve for deforestation (EKCd), and finds that the evidence base for EKCd is more comprehensive. Most studies focus on analyzing data from developing countries. The statistical analysis of these concepts does not provide a unified picture, highlighting the need for further research on different interpretations and approaches.

Hadis Mohajerani, Mathias Jackel, Zoe Salm, Tobias Schuetz, Markus C. Casper

Summary: The aim of this study was to simulate dominant runoff generation processes in a mesoscale catchment in southwestern Germany and compare them with a data-mining-based digital soil map. The physically-based distributed hydrological model WaSiM-ETH was used, with parameterization using 11 Pedo-transfer functions and synthetic rainfall events. The simulated patterns of runoff generation showed high variability due to land use, rainfall rates, and the use of different Pedo-transfer functions.

Supply of wood processing residues - a basic calculation approach and its application on the example of wood packaging

Ulrike Saal, Susanne Iost, Holger Weimar

Summary: Waste reduction, recycling, and increased material efficiency are important goals in industrial ecology, and the wood processing industry is also focused on intensive resource recovery. This study presents an approach for calculating the supply of wood processing residues, using a material flow analysis methodology and product-specific conversion factors. The calculated supply of wood processing residues in the European Union in 2018 was 29.7 million m(3)f, with a total material input of 70.8 million m(3)f and a production volume of 40.8 million m(3)f. The quantification of wood processing residues improves the accuracy and level of detail in existing and future wood resource balances.
