Summary: This paper introduces a new software, HMCA-Contour, which is designed to simplify the assessment and plotting of soil heavy metal contamination. With user-friendly interfaces, the software allows users to easily generate high-quality maps of heavy metal spatial distribution and pollution levels.

Summary: The study revealed that urban soils in Yazd City have high concentrations of toxic metals, especially As, Cd, and Pb, leading to considerable pollution in the area. The quality of urban soil in the study area is significantly influenced by toxic metals, particularly due to the prevailing wind direction, the route of the north-south highway of Iran, and the population density and traffic in certain areas.

Summary: This article provides an overview of alternative methods for restoring contaminated soils (phytoremediation), focusing on areas of excessive metallurgical activities in Greece. Two case studies in Northern Greece were selected, one characterized by metal mining and a hot summer Mediterranean climate, and the other involving lignite mining and pollution under subtropical climate.

Summary: This study investigates the use of phytoremediation, specifically focusing on Mediterranean plants, to reduce heavy metal concentrations in contaminated soils. Based on a review of 166 research studies, the findings suggest that phytoremediation is a sustainable and affordable option, particularly for developing countries. While non-native plant species may be preferred for their metal tolerance mechanisms, they can also pose risks to local ecosystems and should be carefully considered.

Summary: The study revealed that while the overall soil quality in the upstream watershed of the Guanting and Miyun Reservoirs in Beijing is excellent, there are relatively high contamination risks for Cd, Cu, Zn, and Cr. Through the analysis of heavy metal concentrations, factor analysis, and cluster analysis, the sources of different heavy metals were identified.

Summary: In this study, the spatial distribution and source apportionment of 8 heavy metals in topsoil samples from Shizuishan city in China were investigated. The results showed that the concentrations of these heavy metals were higher than the soil background values, and the soil samples exhibited high pollution and potential ecological risk. The heavy metals mainly originated from natural, industrial, traffic emission/coal consumption, and atmospheric deposition sources.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of aging on pig- and P. orientalis-derived biochars on the sorption capacity for Cd and Zn in biochar-treated soils. The sorption capacity increased with biochar application rates, and aging led to enhanced sorption capacity due to increased oxygen-containing functional groups. The presence of DEP enhanced sorption capacity in fresh biochar treatments, but not in aged treatments.

Summary: Spatial distributions and concentrations of heavy metals in vegetable plots in Nanjing were analyzed by GIS. The results showed that most heavy metal concentrations exceeded soil environmental quality standards, with positive correlations between heavy metal contents and soil nutrients. Principal components analysis suggested different sources for different heavy metals, indicating potential correlations between Cd and As sources.

Summary: Soil and water in Egypt are contaminated with various pollutants, including fertilizer misuse, industrial effluent, wastewater discharge, and mining activities. These pollutants have adverse effects on air, water, food, and human health. Some plants, called hyperaccumulators, have the potential to remove pollutants from soil and water at a low cost. This review focuses on the application of trees in the phytoremediation of salts and heavy metals in Egypt.

Summary: The enrichment factor (EF) is commonly used to determine the source of pollution, but its accuracy is questioned due to the discretion of background value choice. This study assessed the validity of the concerns and found varying heavy metal enrichment in soils based on different background values. Statistical analyses revealed strong positive relationships between clay content, cation exchange capacity, and certain heavy metals.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and pollution levels of heavy metals in the soil of Xinjiang. The results showed that Cd pollution was the most serious and certain areas had heavy pollution levels. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between heavy metal Pb and agricultural GDP, and between Cd and comprehensive energy consumption as well as industrial GDP.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities are the main cause of environmental pollution, which poses significant risks to human health by introducing excessive pollutants into the terrestrial ecosystem. This study evaluated the bioaccumulation of carcinogenic metals and mineral elements in wheat irrigated with sewage water, comparing various environmental traits to understand the fate of these toxic metals. The results show that regular monitoring of wheat crops irrigated with wastewater is highly recommended to minimize health risks in humans.

Summary: The assessment of heavy metal soil pollution in Kosovo is incomplete. The research aims to evaluate the level and spatial distribution of heavy metals and biogenic elements in soil samples throughout the country. The concentrations of lead, cadmium, copper, and nickel exceeded the maximum thresholds set by the EU directive in some sampling locations.
