In this study, an analytical method for the routine determination of nine perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UPLC-QTOF-MS), was developed, validated, and used for their assay in surface water and sediments. The method yielded good linearity with a correlation coefficient (R (2)) ranging between 0.991 and 0.999 for all the compounds investigated. Limits of detection (LOD) ranged between 0.02 and 0.08 ng/l, while the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.065 to 0.261 ng/l. Recovery studies were carried out in replicate assays, and percentage recoveries ranged between 56 and 112% for the nine perfluorinated compounds investigated. The method was applied to determine levels of perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) and PFOS in surface water and sediment samples collected along the Plankenburg River in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Samples were pre-treated, extracted, and cleaned up via offline solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures, using hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) C-18 cartridges. Levels of PFOA and PFOS found in surface water ranged between (12.8 +/- 4.24 and 62.62 +/- 4.86 ng/l) and (< LOD and 3.8 ng/l), respectively, while levels measured in corresponding sediment samples ranged between 0.14-0.33 ng/g (PFOA) and < LOD and 0.7 +/- 0.013 ng/g (PFOS). Concentrations of PFOA and PFOS were suspected to be associated with anthropogenic activities in the vicinity of the sampling areas.

Summary: The management and quality monitoring of wastewater play a crucial role in sustainable development, with ecotoxicological assessment methods proving to be effective supplements to traditional chemical evaluations. A study in a location in South Africa revealed that while the effluent from wastewater treatment plants showed toxicity to test organisms, dilution could significantly mitigate these effects.

Summary: A method for extracting and determining fullerenes in sediments was developed and validated for environmental risk assessment. The environmental concentration of fullerenes in sediment samples collected from Umgeni River, South Africa ranged from not detected to 30.55 μg g(-1) using this method, which is the first report on the occurrence and ecological risk assessment of carbonaceous fullerene nanoparticles in African sediments and biosolids.

Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in aqueous systems under visible light irridiation using needle-like SnO2 nanoparticles anchored on exfoliated g-C3N4

Adewumi Olufemi Oluwole, Olatunde Stephen Olatunji

Summary: In this study, needle-like SnO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites were synthesized and showed efficient decomposition of tetracycline under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction between SnO2 nanoparticles and exfoliated g-C3N4 nanosheets promoted the separation of charge carriers, leading to enhanced degradation of tetracycline. This nanocomposite material has potential applications for the degradation of pharmaceuticals with similar chemical structures.

Sorption and partitioning of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) onto sediments of Diep and Plankenburg river systems Western Cape, South Africa

Summary: This study investigated the partitioning behavior of PFOA and PFOS in sediment samples from river systems. The results showed that the sediments had high sorption capacities for PFOA and PFOS, with the sorption increasing over time. Lower pH values and increasing ionic strength favored the sorption and partitioning of PFAS onto sediments in aqueous solution. This study provides important data and scientific knowledge for understanding the fate and sorption of PFAS in aquatic systems.

Occurrence, detection and ecotoxicity studies of selected pharmaceuticals in aqueous ecosystems- a systematic appraisal

Elizabeth Oyinkansola Omotola, Adewumi Olufemi Oluwole, Peter Olusakin Oladoye, Olatunde Stephen Olatunji

Summary: Pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) have become an important group of environmental contaminants globally, as their residues are constantly detected in the environment. This study aims to address the knowledge gap on the occurrence of selected PCs in environmental matrices in Africa compared to other regions, as well as their toxic effects on both aquatic and non-aquatic biota through ecotoxicity bioassays. Africa has the highest levels of certain pharmaceutical residues, while Europe has the lowest. However, there is limited data on the combined forms of pharmaceuticals for ecotoxicity bioassays.

Summary: Composite materials of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) doped with activated carbon (AC) were synthesized and applied for the degradation of enrofloxacin in an aqueous system. The composites showed enhanced photocatalytic performance and extended visible light response. The improved efficiency can be attributed to the increased surface area and high photoinduced charge separation. The composites also exhibited excellent recyclability and stability, making them promising candidates for environmental remediation.
