Summary: Gas-liquid interfaces have gained interest in biomedicine, particularly in the use of microbubbles as theranostic platforms. In this study, two commercially available photosensitizers were conjugated to bovine serum albumin before microbubble synthesis to enhance photodynamic therapy. The conjugates increased microbubble concentration and stability compared to plain microbubbles. Agents based on one of the photosensitizers demonstrated higher photodynamic activity and microbubbles showed acoustic stability in human blood plasma. The study concludes that these microbubble platforms have potential for further applications in photodynamic therapy.

Summary: Phthalocyanine derivatives can act as photosensitizers for the treatment of microbial infections. By modifying the structure and substituents of phthalocyanines, the interaction with microorganisms and photodynamic inactivation can be enhanced. Phthalocyanines have strong absorption and emit red fluorescence in the phototherapeutic window, and they efficiently generate reactive oxygen species to eliminate microbes.

Summary: This study presents a convenient method for the synthesis of N,N-dimethyl chitosan oligosaccharide (DMCOS) from chitin. The synthesis protocol involves acid-catalyzed tandem depolymerization-deacetylation-N-methylation reactions using formaldehyde as the methylation reagent. The resulting DMCOS exhibits a high degree of deacetylation, a high degree of methylation, and a low average molecular weight, and shows superior antifungal activity against Candida species compared to chitosan.

Summary: This study investigated the application of biopolymeric materials and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the safety of strawberries. The materials showed potential as photosensitizers and effectively reduced the survival of Staphylococcus aureus on the surface of the films. The materials were also shown to be safe for use as films without posing a risk to humans and the environment. The photoactive coatings on strawberries maintained their weight and effectively delayed fungal contamination. The antimicrobial effects of aPDT combined with the photoactive coatings were enhanced, while the quality of the strawberries was maintained.
