The photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction in crystalline materials is one of most important routes for the synthesis of cyclobutane compounds, which are otherwise difficult to prepare by conventional organic synthesis. In this perspective, a series of olefins that undergo photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions is summarized and categorized according to their various functionality. Using these olefins, a range of cyclobutane derivatives were prepared by this [2 + 2] cycloaddition protocol.

Synthesis of triarylborane-centered N-heterocyclic carbene cages with tunable photophysical properties

Yi-Fan Zhang, Ya-Wen Zhang, Xin Li, Li-Ying Sun, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: Triarylborane-based discrete metal-carbene supramolecular cages [M-3(1)(2)](PF6)(3) (M = Ag, Au) were synthesized and characterized. The new hexacarbene assemblies show a significant solvatochromic effect in solvents of different polarity. Furthermore, the reversible fluoride binding property of [Au-3(1)(2)](PF6)(3) was investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence titrations. This work holds promise for future developments in the area of highly emissive and stimulus-responsive NHC-metal assemblies.

Xin Li, Yi-Lin Wang, Can Chen, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: In this study, a series of carbene-triphenylamine hybrids with tunable emission were synthesized. These hybrids can be converted to carbon-centered luminescent radicals with blue-to-cyan emissions or nitrogen-centered luminescent radicals with orange emissions through chemical reduction or oxidation, respectively. The nitrogen-centered radicals exhibited good stability in atmospheric air.

Hierarchical self-assembly of a radical naphthalenediimide-based N-heterocyclic carbene-Au(i) macrocycle

Chong Wang, Qing-Wen Zhu, Jian-Gang Yu, Xin Li, Hao Li, Li-Ying Sun, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: Here, we demonstrate that a naphthalenediimide skeleton can promote the hierarchical assembly of a metal N-heterocyclic carbene macrocycle into various supramolecular structures. The macrocycle displays solvent-dependent supramolecular isomerization, and two different polymorphs are obtained from DMF and MeCN solvents. Co-precipitation with cuprous bromide anion leads to the formation of a tertiary structure. By utilizing donor-acceptor interactions, two cocrystal complexes with different supramolecular systems are successfully created. Additionally, the solid-state structure of the corresponding radical macrocycle confirms the presence of an ordered linear array formed through noncovalent interactions with the NHC-Au(i) macrocycle.

Metal-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry Directed toward Metallosupramolecular Synthesis and Beyond

Sha Bai, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have led to breakthroughs in transition-metal catalysis, main group chemistry, and organocatalysis. However, the chemistry of NHC-based metallosupramolecular assemblies is underdeveloped. This Account summarizes the development and applications of M-NHC chemistry toward supramolecular synthesis, including structural design, postassembly modification (PAM), and functional applications. The M-NHC-templated approaches have proven to be powerful methods for constructing diverse architectures with functional applications. Rating: 9/10

Solvato-Controlled Assembly and Structural Transformation of Emissive Poly-NHC-Based Organometallic Cages and Their Applications in Amino Acid Sensing and Fluorescence Imaging

Heng Zhang, Yang Li, Yi-Fan Zhang, Xiu-Juan Qiao, Li-Ying Sun, Jianli Li, Yao-Yu Wang, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: This study reports the solvato-controlled self-assembly of two unique topologies with different emission characteristics, a water-soluble Ag8L4 cage (A) and an Ag4L2 cage (B), produced from the same sulfonate-pendant tetraphenylethene (TPE) bridged tetrakis-(1,2,4-triazolium) ligand. Both cages show interesting solvent-responsive reversible structural transformation, and the change of fluorescence signals can efficiently track the process. Additionally, water-soluble cage A exhibits unique properties in thermochromism, thiol amino acid sensing, and subcellular imaging in aqueous media.

Summary: A series of tetrahedral cages functionalized with crown ether moieties were designed and synthesized, which exhibited reversible binding of ammonium cations and could be further developed as a drug delivery system. The combination of a bisammonium linker and one of the cages resulted in the formation of a supramolecular gel with multiple-stimuli responsiveness and excellent self-healing properties. The drug-loaded gel showed significantly improved cytotoxicity compared to free drugs.

Gold(i) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with tunable electronic properties for sensitive colorimetric detection of glutathione

Yi-Fan Zhang, Xin Li, Heng Zhang, Xi-Qiang Wang, Li-Ying Sun, Xiang-Long Duan, Ying-Feng Han

Summary: This study synthesized a series of sterically and electronically modulated gold(I)-NHC complexes and applied them for glutathione (GSH) detection. The results showed that these gold(I)-NHC complexes exhibited peroxidase-like activity and could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 to produce blue oxidized TMB. Importantly, introducing electron-withdrawing moieties on the NHC backbone enhanced the catalytic activity. Therefore, using Au(I)-NHC complexes as a colorimetric assay enables sensitive detection of GSH with a low detection limit of 0.14 mM.
