Summary: In this work, a general and broadly applicable template-directed photochemical [2+2]-cycloaddition reaction was developed for accessing a wide range of symmetrical and unsymmetrical cyclobutane products. The use of 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene as a covalent template enabled successful and highly selective photochemical homodimerization and heterodimerization reactions between cinnamic acid derivatives in the solid state. Notably, the method demonstrated excellent compatibility with both aryl- and heteroaryl-containing substrates, giving rise to beta-truxinic acid analogues as single diastereomers and in high yields (up to 99%).

Summary: The radical-cation-initiated dimerization of electron rich alkenes is an efficient method for synthesizing cyclobutanes, with organophotoredox catalysis and continuous flow technology providing a convenient synthetic route. This methodology has a broad scope and can yield a new class of functional materials, as well as improving the synthetic route to lignan dimeric natural products. The use of continuous flow conditions results in higher chemical yields and significantly reduced reaction times compared to traditional batch reactions.

Summary: A simple and practical method for constructing 1,3,5-trisubstituted imidazolidine derivatives via [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction has been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly between nonstabilized azomethine ylides and 2-benzothiazolamines, yielding a variety of differently substituted imidazolidines in high yields up to 98%. The structure of one example was confirmed by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis.

Summary: We report a meta-C-H olefination of arylmethanesulfonates using a potentially versatile aliphatic nitrile-directing group under microwave irradiation conditions. The reaction exhibited fair to very good yields and good to outstanding regioselectivities. Notably, the protocol showed broad substrate scope, including olefin-derived drugs and cyclic olefins. Furthermore, it was found that a dual meta-C-H bond could be utilized to generate bis-olefination products.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and structural characterization of free, uncomplexed phosphet-2-ones for the first time. Unsaturated four-membered phosphacycles were prepared by phosphinidene transfer from dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene compounds to cyclopropenones. The reaction is proposed to proceed through ketene-ylide and ketene-phosphaalkene intermediates. Further transformations of the phosphet-2-ones yielded more phosphet-2-ones and 1,2-dihydrophosphetes, including two furanone derivatives which are postulated to be produced by intramolecular phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulations.

Summary: The ditopic halogen-bond donors 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-di-I-tFb) form binary cocrystals with the unsymmetrical ditopic X-bond acceptor trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (2,4-bpe). For (1,2-di-I-tFb).(2,4-bpe) and (1,3-di-I-tFb).(2,4-bpe), the X-bond donor supports the C=C bonds of 2,4-bpe to undergo a topochemical [2+2] photodimerization in the solid state.

Summary: The silver-catalyzed intramolecular formal [2 + 2]-cycloaddition of alkyne-tethered cyclohexadienones allows for the synthesis of tricyclic fused cyclobutenes and dihydrofurans. The reaction can be controlled by the electronic properties of the alkynes, with electron-rich alkynes leading to cyclobutenes and electron-deficient alkynes forming dihydrofurans. Additionally, the synthetic potential of this method was demonstrated through gram-scale reactions and various transformations on the cyclobutene products.

Summary: Here, we demonstrate that a naphthalenediimide skeleton can promote the hierarchical assembly of a metal N-heterocyclic carbene macrocycle into various supramolecular structures. The macrocycle displays solvent-dependent supramolecular isomerization, and two different polymorphs are obtained from DMF and MeCN solvents. Co-precipitation with cuprous bromide anion leads to the formation of a tertiary structure. By utilizing donor-acceptor interactions, two cocrystal complexes with different supramolecular systems are successfully created. Additionally, the solid-state structure of the corresponding radical macrocycle confirms the presence of an ordered linear array formed through noncovalent interactions with the NHC-Au(i) macrocycle.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of sterically and electronically modulated gold(I)-NHC complexes and applied them for glutathione (GSH) detection. The results showed that these gold(I)-NHC complexes exhibited peroxidase-like activity and could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 to produce blue oxidized TMB. Importantly, introducing electron-withdrawing moieties on the NHC backbone enhanced the catalytic activity. Therefore, using Au(I)-NHC complexes as a colorimetric assay enables sensitive detection of GSH with a low detection limit of 0.14 mM.
