In corals, different biological processes are associated with the daily variation of temperature and light, which in shallow reefs can vary widely and regularly reach extreme levels. The expression of cellular defense mechanisms such as the heat shock proteins Hsp70 and Hsp60 was analyzed in coral colonies adapted to live in a shallow lagoon, during three consecutive days characterized by the same temperature/light trend. Each of the three species investigated showed a significant diel modulation of both Hsps, which also displayed a coordinated expression. However, the diel modulations of both Hsps were species specific and only that of the branching Acropora tenuis appeared correlated with the temperature. All the species displayed high Hsp levels at 13.00 and 16.00, probably as protection for the cellular stress produced by the elevated temperature and light. Taken together, the results may provide useful information about the cellular mechanisms involved in the corals adaptation to extreme conditions.

Evolution and biogeography of the Zanclea-Scleractinia symbiosis

Davide Maggioni, Roberto Arrigoni, Davide Seveso, Paolo Galli, Michael L. Berumen, Vianney Denis, Bert W. Hoeksema, Danwei Huang, Federica Manca, Daniela Pica, Stefania Puce, James D. Reimer, Simone Montano

Summary: In this study, 321 Zanclea colonies associated with 31 coral genera were analyzed to investigate the evolution and biogeography of this group. The results showed high genetic diversity of hydrozoans, with nine clades corresponding to cryptic or pseudo-cryptic species. While most Zanclea clades have a wide distribution across the Indo-Pacific, two host-specific clades were possibly found exclusively in the Red Sea. The lack of congruence between Zanclea and coral phylogenies suggests a lack of coevolutionary events.

Diversity, host specificity and biogeography in the Cladocorynidae (Hydrozoa, Capitata), with description of a new genus

Summary: This study provides a thorough morpho-molecular reassessment of the hydrozoan family Cladocorynidae, confirming the monophyly of the two nominal genera and describing a new genus exclusively associated with octocorals. The research suggests that symbiosis with octocorals likely appeared in the most recent common ancestor of Pteroclava and Pseudozanclea, with specific synapomorphies emerging in the most recent common ancestor of all cladocorynid taxa. Genetic analysis of Pteroclava krempfi colonies revealed high intra-specific variability and distinct clades based on host specificity and geographic distribution.

An integrative study of some species of Gonaxia Vervoort, 1993 from off New Caledonia, with the establishment of Gonaxiidae as a new family of thecate hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa)

Summary: This article reports on ten species belonging to the genus Gonaxia found in recent collections from the deep waters of the New Caledonian region by the French Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos Program. The study used classical morphological approaches and included the first genetic characterization of the genus. Two new species were described, and additional notes on other species were provided. A new family, Gonaxiidae Maggioni, fam. nov., was proposed based on the multi-locus phylogenetic hypothesis of the Macrocolonia.

Summary: The genus Sciurella Allman, 1883 is reassessed based on fertile specimens from Indonesia and Australia, using both morphological and genetic approaches. The distinction between Sciurella and Nemertesia is confirmed by newly-generated genetic data. The taxonomic status of the species within Sciurella is discussed based on available literature data.

Phylogeography of Blue Corals (Genus Heliopora) Across the Indo-West Pacific

Summary: Species delimitation of corals is complex, requiring integrated genetic and morphological analyses, and sampling from a wide geographic range. In the case of the blue coral Heliopora, there are two valid species and distinct genetic lineages in different regions. This study highlights the importance of phylogenetic analysis using genome-wide markers and examining populations across their distribution range.

Being Safe, but Not Too Safe: A Nudibranch Feeding on a Bryozoan-Associated Hydrozoan

Summary: Nudibranchs, carnivorous animals, have been observed to prey on various types of animals, including cnidarians such as hydrozoans. However, there have been no records of nudibranchs preying on symbiotic hydrozoans due to the protective action of the host. In this study, a newly described nudibranch species, Sakuraeolis marhe, was found feeding on Zanclea sp. 2, a hydrozoan associated with a bryozoan. This is the first well-documented case of a nudibranch feeding on a symbiotic hydrozoan, providing new insights into their trophic associations.

Differential genetic variability at two mtDNA COI regions does not imply mismatches in Odonata molecular identification performances

Summary: This study compared the identification performance of the 5' and 3' end COI regions in odonate species, with the 3' end region showing slightly higher variability. However, phylogenetic reconstructions, genetic distances, and diagnostic characters identification demonstrated similar discrimination power for both regions. Overall, the DNA barcoding inventory assembled in this study provides valuable insights into the systematics and conservation of odonate species, with implications for future monitoring-based studies.
