Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of malnutrition in elderly cancer patients using the nutritional assessment tool PG-SGA SF. Malnutrition was found to be significantly associated with worse overall survival, impacting quality of life and leading to more frequent nutrition impact symptoms. The study also revealed that PG-SGA SF improved the predictive ability of the TNM classification system for mortality in elderly cancer patients.

Summary: This study investigated the nutritional status and preoperative nutrition impact symptoms of patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery in 27 Australian tertiary hospitals. The results showed that malnutrition and clinically significant weight loss were not associated with surgical complications but were related to increased length of hospital stay.

Summary: Malnutrition, cachexia, and sarcopenia are common problems in pancreatic cancer patients and are associated with increased toxicity, shorter survival, and reduced quality of life. Early diagnosis of nutritional problems is crucial for proper management in pancreatic cancer patients. It is important for healthcare professionals and patients to understand the significance of nutritional status and its impact on clinical outcomes and quality of life.

Summary: This study compared the nutritional outcomes of HPV-positive and negative OPSCC patients undergoing (chemo) radiotherapy, finding that although HPV-positive patients were less likely to be malnourished at the beginning of treatment, the difference in malnutrition rates between the two groups did not significantly differ over the course of treatment. Additionally, HPV-positive patients were significantly more likely to experience >10% weight loss at three months post-treatment. Both HPV-positive and negative patients require intense nutritional intervention during and after treatment, with HPV-positive patients potentially needing more intense intervention during acute recovery. Ongoing nutritional support is essential for both groups at 3 months post-treatment.

Summary: This observational study aimed to determine the incidence of poor nutritional status and symptom burden in children undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The results showed that most of the patients were at high risk of malnutrition, and the number of symptoms was significantly positively correlated with the risk score for malnutrition and the Z-score.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and prognostic role of nutrition impact symptoms (NIS) in patients with lung cancer. The results showed that NIS were closely related to the overall survival and quality of life of lung cancer patients. NIS were independent prognostic factors and correlated with malnutrition and cancer cachexia.

Summary: Malnutrition is common in cancer patients, and symptom barriers to adequate oral intake, known as nutritional impact symptoms (NIS), are associated with reduced intake and weight loss. Currently, there are no specific guidelines for the management of NIS, but evidence suggests that simple assessments and inexpensive interventions can be used for diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive validity of two malnutrition screening tools in different hospital wards, and found that PG-SGA SF as a proactive screening tool can predict length of stay, while SNAQ cannot. Therefore, proactive screening for malnutrition risk using PG-SGA is recommended.

Summary: The research suggests that HPV infection may increase the risk of malnutrition, significant weight loss, and the need for gastrostomy in head and neck cancer patients. However, the data on the influence of HPV infection on the occurrence and severity of nutritional disorders in HNC patients is still limited and inconclusive.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the consumption of ultra-processed foods by pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes mellitus and its association with total gestational weight gain and glycemic control. The results showed that increased consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with poorer glycemic control and higher total gestational weight gain in pregnant women with diabetes.

Summary: This study found an association between dietary fat intake and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and/or liver fibrosis in people living with HIV/AIDS. High intake of total fat was linked to higher risk of NAFLD, while intermediate intake of certain fatty acids was associated with lower risk. Conversely, higher intake of certain fatty acids was linked to lower odds of liver fibrosis, while higher intake of n-6 PUFA was significantly associated with fibrosis. Dietary assessment of total fat and fatty acids should be incorporated into HIV care for prevention of NAFLD and fibrosis in this population.

Summary: This study evaluates the association between the nutritional status of children and adolescents with cancer in Brazil and the prediction of clinical outcomes. The study found a high prevalence of malnutrition among the participants, and severe malnutrition and living in the North region were associated with the poorest survival. The study also identified predictors of readmission within 30 days, including region, age group, and type of cancer.
