Can we increase efficiency of CT lung cancer screening by combining with CVD and COPD screening? Results of an early economic evaluation

Carina M. Behr, Hendrik Koffijberg, Koen Degeling, Rozemarijn Vliegenthart, Maarten J. IJzerman

Summary: The study estimated the maximum acceptable cost per screened individual for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening and evaluated the impact of additionally screening for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), or both. The results showed that combined screening for lung cancer and cardiovascular disease is more economically viable than screening for lung cancer alone, primarily due to the benefits of cardiovascular disease screening. Screening high-risk populations for cardiovascular disease is more cost-effective compared to COPD.

Monitoring of rheumatoid arthritis: a patient survey on disease insight and possible added value of an innovative inflammation monitoring device

Ria Wolkorte, Lieke Heesink, Michelle M. A. Kip, Hendrik Koffijberg, Monique Tabak, Christiane Gruenloh

Summary: Most rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients feel they have sufficient insight into their disease and perceive added value in using the HandScan monitoring device, mainly due to the additional knowledge it provides on inflammation. Patients believe that using an optical spectral transmission device can increase their understanding of their current disease status and support discussions with rheumatologists on treatment options.

Summary: HyFoSy and HSG produce similar findings in a majority of patients and clinical management based on the results of either HyFoSy or HSG leads to comparable pregnancy outcomes. HyFoSy is experienced as significantly less painful.

Predicting pregnancy chances leading to term live birth in oligo/anovulatory women diagnosed with PCOS

Marlise N. Gunning, Jacob P. Christ, Bas B. van Rijn, Maria P. H. Koster, Gouke J. Bonsel, Joop S. E. Laven, Marinus J. C. Eijkemans, Bart C. J. M. Fauser

Summary: This prospective cohort follow-up study aimed to identify patient features that predict the time to pregnancy leading to term live birth in infertile women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results showed that race, smoking, BMI, insulin, total testosterone, and SHBG concentrations were associated with the chance of pregnancy.

Maternal Cardiovascular Health in Early Pregnancy and Childhood Brain Structure

Carolina C. V. Silva, Susana Santos, Ryan L. Muetzel, Meike W. Vernooij, Bas B. van Rijn, Vincent W. V. Jaddoe, Hanan El Marroun

Summary: The study found that poor maternal cardiovascular health during pregnancy may impact offspring brain development in the long term, with higher maternal diastolic blood pressure in early pregnancy associated with lower offspring white matter mean diffusivity.

Associations of Early Pregnancy Metabolite Profiles with Gestational Blood Pressure Development

Sophia M. M. Blaauwendraad, Rama J. J. Wahab, Bas B. B. van Rijn, Berthold Koletzko, Vincent W. V. Jaddoe, Romy Gaillard

Summary: Blood pressure development plays a major role in gestational hypertensive disorders. Metabolomics can identify the underlying metabolic mechanisms and predict gestational hypertensive disorders. Altered early pregnancy serum metabolite profiles, mainly characterized by changes in non-esterified fatty acids and phospholipids, are associated with higher gestational blood pressure throughout pregnancy.

Offspring school performance at age 12 after induction of labor vs non-intervention at term: A linked cohort study

Renee J. Burger, Ben W. W. Mol, Wessel Ganzevoort, Sanne J. J. Gordijn, Eva Pajkrt, Joris A. M. Van Der Post, Christianne J. M. De Groot, Anita C. J. Ravelli

Summary: This study examined the impact of labor induction at each week of gestation from 37 to 42 weeks on offspring's school performance at age 12. The results showed that induction of labor was associated with decreased school performance scores and a lower proportion of children reaching higher secondary school level. These long-term effects should be taken into account in counseling and decision making.

Summary: Childhood maltreatment is associated with depression, cardiometabolic disease, and their comorbidity in adulthood. A meta-analysis of 13 international observational studies found that adults with a history of childhood maltreatment have higher odds of depression, cardiometabolic disease, and comorbidity between both conditions. The associations remained significant after adjusting for lifestyle factors.

Gestational age and socio demographic factors associated with school performance at the age of 12 years, a population based study

Renee J. Burger, Tessa J. Roseboom, Wessel Ganzevoort, Sanne J. Gordijn, Eva Pajkrt, Ameen Abu-Hanna, Martine Eskes, Aleid G. Leemhuis, Ben W. Mol, Christianne J. M. de Groot, Anita C. J. Ravelli

Summary: This study investigates the association between gestational age, sociodemographic characteristics, and school performance at the age of 12. Results show that longer gestational age is associated with better school performance, regardless of socio-demographic factors. Factors such as maternal education, maternal age, and ethnicity also influence school performance. Preterm children and those from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds are more vulnerable to the negative impact of preterm birth on school performance. Caution is needed in interpreting the results due to differential loss to follow-up.

Health Economic Research Assessing the Value of Early Detection of Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review

Martijn J. Oude J. Wolcherink, Carina M. M. Behr, Xavier G. L. V. Pouwels, Carine J. M. Doggen, Hendrik Koffijberg

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the cost effectiveness of recent early detection strategies for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in at-risk adult populations. The findings suggest that most early detection strategies are cost effective and can reduce CVD-related costs. However, the lack of standardization complicates the comparison of cost-effectiveness outcomes between studies.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the physiological parameters of coronary microvascular function, coronary flow reserve (CFR), and microvascular resistance reserve (MRR). The study found that CFRabs and MRRabs measured using continuous thermodilution were lower than CFRbolus and MRRbolus measured using bolus thermodilution, and they were related to physical activity and health.

Clinical decision rules in primary care: necessary investments for sustainable healthcare

Jorn S. S. Heerink, Ruud Oudega, Rogier Hopstaken, Hendrik Koffijberg, Ron Kusters

Summary: Clinical judgement in primary care is often decisive, and the use of Clinical decision rules (CDRs) is limited in this setting. This paper discusses the implementation barriers and the need for tailor-made CDRs in primary care. The case study on the Oudega rule highlights the importance of evaluating current CDRs and anticipating new developments for improved patient-oriented care.
