Algal test using chlorococcal algae Desmodesmus subspicatus was used to determine single acute toxicity of either diclofenac or cadmium and to assess acute toxicity of their binary mixtures. The test confirmed significant acute toxicity of both diclofenac and cadmium; diclofenac with acute toxicity E(r)C50 60.44 +/- 0.20 mg/L and cadmium with acute toxicity E(r)C50 2.14 +/- 0.02 mg/L. This study of acute toxicity of binary cadmium-diclofenac mixtures confirmed their negative effects on aquatic producers and it also proved influence of the above substances on acute toxicity of their mixtures. Normalization method was applied to predict acute toxicity of binary mixtures composed of chemicals with significantly different acute toxicities. Normalization method used molar ratio (R) of chemicals in binary mixtures as their composition descriptor.

Summary: In this study, nanocrystalline lanthanum orthovanadate co-doped with Eu3+ was successfully synthesized through solid-state synthesis. The relationship between the structural, morphological, and photoluminescent properties of LaVO4 was examined for the first time, providing valuable insights into the characteristics of this material. Characterization techniques including XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, FTIR, PL, UV-Vis DRS, SEM, and AFM were employed to investigate the synthesized powders.

Summary: Thermogravimetry (TG) is a simple method for rapid analysis of soil properties, but its link with microbiological soil properties has not been systematically tested. This study aimed to search and validate the relationships between thermal mass losses (TML) and various soil properties. Results showed significant correlations between TML and basic soil properties, and equations developed from these correlations were successfully validated for prediction, mainly for arable soils.

Comparing the photocatalytic performance of GO/ZnO and g-C3N4/ZnO composites prepared using metallurgical waste as a source of zinc

Radim Skuta, Bruno Kostura, Michal Ritz, Krystof Foniok, Jiri Pavlovsky, Dalibor Matysek

Summary: Acid leachate from steel sludge was used to prepare photo-catalytically active composites based on GO/ZnO-L and g-C3N4/ZnO-L. The composites exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of azo dye compared to the model composites. This is attributed to the modified electronic structure and the emergence of new quantum levels caused by the presence of other metal oxides in ZnO-L, leading to a more efficient separation of photo-generated charge carriers.

Summary: This study demonstrates the comparison of two different semiconductor materials, TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 composites, modified with Ag nanoparticles as photocatalysts for degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) dye. A new synthesis route for Ag NPs was proposed, and the best photocatalytic performances were achieved for TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 materials modified with a very low Ag content. The results suggest the potential of these materials for the degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment.

Summary: In this study, steel sludge was used to prepare the ZnOL-GO composite, which exhibited excellent photocatalytic efficiency against Acid Orange 7 compared to the model composite. The presence of other metal oxides in ZnOL in conjunction with GO significantly increased the photocatalytic efficiency of the composite material, likely due to modification of the electronic structure and more efficient separation of charge carriers. The results demonstrate new possibilities in processing and utilizing metallurgical waste.
