Acute pesticide intoxication is a common method of suicide globally. This article reviews current diagnostic methods and makes suggestions for future development. In the case of paraquat intoxication, it is characterized by multi-organ failure, causing substantial mortality and morbidity. Early diagnosis may save the life of a paraquat intoxication patient. Conventional paraquat intoxication diagnostic methods, such as symptom review and urine sodium dithionite assay, are timeconsuming and impractical in resource-scarce areas where most intoxication cases occur. Several experimental and clinical studies have shown the potential of portable Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS), paper-based devices, and machine learning for paraquat intoxication diagnosis. Portable SERS and new SERS substrates maintain the sensitivity of SERS while being less costly and more convenient than conventional SERS. Paper-based devices provide the advantages of price and portability. Machine learning algorithms can be implemented as a mobile phone application and facilitate diagnosis in resource-limited areas. Although these methods have not yet met all features of an ideal diagnostic method, the combination and development of these methods offer much promise. Published by AIP Publishing.

Refractive Changes Following Premature Posterior Capsulotomy Using Neodymium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet Laser

Chia-Yi Lee, Tsai-Te Lu, Yaa-Jyuhn James Meir, Kuan-Jen Chen, Chun-Fu Liu, Chao-Min Cheng, Hung-Chi Chen

Summary: This study aimed to determine the timing of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy on CDVA, IOP, and SE in patients with PCO. The results showed that Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy performed within one year after cataract surgery may lead to significant hyperopic change, in which ACD alteration affects the hyperopic shift significantly.

Urinary Biomarkers for Detection of Clinical Endometriosis or Adenomyosis

Wei-Chun Chen, Chao-Min Cheng, Wan-Ting Liao, Ting-Chang Chang

Summary: Clinical endometriosis/adenomyosis can be diagnosed by serum CA125, as well as urinary markers such as VDBP and A1AT creatinine ratios. The combination of these biomarkers provides good diagnostic performance. The development of non-invasive point-of-care tests using these markers is of great importance.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in miRNA and cytokine expression in the peritoneal fluid of OVCA patients after receiving HIPEC during CRS. The results showed immediate down-regulation of miR-320a-3p and miR-663-a, followed by upregulation after 24 hours. Additionally, six other miRNAs and several cytokines demonstrated significant changes in expression post-HIPEC. Further research is needed to understand the role of HIPEC in these changes.

Delivery and Transcriptome Assessment of an In Vitro Three-Dimensional Proximal Tubule Model Established by Human Kidney 2 Cells in Clinical Gelatin Sponges

Hui-Yi Hsiao, Tzung-Hai Yen, Fang-Yu Wu, Chao-Min Cheng, Jia-Wei Liu, Yu-Ting Fan, Jung-Ju Huang, Chung-Yi Nien

Summary: The high prevalence of kidney diseases and the low identification rate of drug nephrotoxicity in preclinical studies highlight the importance of representative and feasible renal models. In this study, a simplified three-dimensional (3D) model using HK-2 cells and gelatin sponges as scaffolds was established. Compared to the two-dimensional (2D) model, the 3D model exhibited a more similar gene expression profile to native human proximal tubule cells, which is crucial for successful nephrotoxicity prediction.

COVID-19 Bivalent Booster in Pregnancy: Maternal and Neonatal Antibody Response to Omicron BA.5, BQ.1, BF.7 and XBB.1.5 SARS-CoV-2

Wei-Chun Chen, Shu-Yu Hu, Ching-Fen Shen, Hui-Yu Chuang, Chin-Ru Ker, Ching-Ju Shen, Chao-Min Cheng

Summary: The study investigated the effects of bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccination during pregnancy on the levels of neutralizing antibodies in maternal and umbilical cord blood, as well as the efficacy against Omicron SARS-CoV-2 subvariants. The results showed high levels of neutralizing antibody inhibition in both maternal and umbilical cord blood for the Omicron subvariants. Individuals who received AZD1222 vaccines in previous monovalent vaccination had poorer maternal neutralizing antibody inhibition for certain subvariants. Maternal blood from infants with lower birth weights demonstrated better neutralizing antibody inhibition for certain subvariants.
