Summary: A highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay strip was developed for the rapid and accurate detection of the acute myocardial infarction biomarker, H-FABP. By utilizing a custom smartphone-based analytical device and tonality analysis, quantitative detection of H-FABP with a low limit of detection was achieved. The visually distinguishable color change on the strip around the threshold concentration of H-FABP enables semi-quantitative diagnosis by the naked eye.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of pesticide poisoning patients admitted to two Malaysian hospitals and the early impact of the national paraquat ban implemented on 1st January 2020. The majority of pesticide poisoning cases were self-poisoning, with a higher proportion among the Indian ethnic minority. Domestic interpersonal conflicts were the most common socio-environmental stressors, and paraquat poisoning accounted for the majority of fatalities. After the paraquat ban, there was a decrease in the proportion of pesticide poisoning cases using paraquat and a slight reduction in overall case-fatality.

Summary: Major depressive disorder, or depression, is a common mental illness worldwide, and the current clinical diagnosis methods have limitations. Therefore, it is crucial to search for high-quality depression biomarkers and develop accurate and convenient early diagnosis methods. This review summarizes various potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of depression, discusses their advantages and disadvantages in early diagnosis, and explores the feasibility of applying these biomarkers for depression diagnosis. Additionally, disposable devices and wearable devices for detecting these biomarkers are introduced and analyzed, and future perspectives for early diagnosis of depression, especially in a point-of-care scenario, are proposed.

Summary: A method for constructing 3D fibrous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates was developed, allowing direct formation of monolayer gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on filter paper. The strategy involves coating the fiber surface with perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FOS) to manipulate surface energy and enable the thermodynamically driven formation of discrete Au NPs. The 3D fibrous structure of the Au NP-decorated paper provides a large detection space and enhances sensitivity for trace-level, label-free detection of various substances.

Summary: In this study, a novel strip-based lateral flow assay (LFA) using lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles conjugated to antibodies was developed for detecting preeclampsia. The CD44/FKBPL ratio was found to be reduced in early-onset preeclampsia (EOPE) with good diagnostic potential. The improved LFA prototypes achieved a lower limit of detection for FKBPL and CD44, making it more sensitive than the standard ELISA method. The LFA showed promise as a rapid and highly sensitive point-of-care test for preeclampsia, with a 100% positive predictive value and 91% negative predictive value using clinical samples.

Summary: Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) is an early biomarker for acute myocardial infarction. Researchers developed an electrochemiluminescence device integrated with a microfluidic chip (m-ECL device) for on-site detection of H-FABP. The device enables direct detection of H-FABP in human serum without any pre-treatment and shows promising application prospects for point-of-care testing of acute myocardial infarction.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in miRNA and cytokine expression in the peritoneal fluid of OVCA patients after receiving HIPEC during CRS. The results showed immediate down-regulation of miR-320a-3p and miR-663-a, followed by upregulation after 24 hours. Additionally, six other miRNAs and several cytokines demonstrated significant changes in expression post-HIPEC. Further research is needed to understand the role of HIPEC in these changes.

Summary: The high prevalence of kidney diseases and the low identification rate of drug nephrotoxicity in preclinical studies highlight the importance of representative and feasible renal models. In this study, a simplified three-dimensional (3D) model using HK-2 cells and gelatin sponges as scaffolds was established. Compared to the two-dimensional (2D) model, the 3D model exhibited a more similar gene expression profile to native human proximal tubule cells, which is crucial for successful nephrotoxicity prediction.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccination during pregnancy on the levels of neutralizing antibodies in maternal and umbilical cord blood, as well as the efficacy against Omicron SARS-CoV-2 subvariants. The results showed high levels of neutralizing antibody inhibition in both maternal and umbilical cord blood for the Omicron subvariants. Individuals who received AZD1222 vaccines in previous monovalent vaccination had poorer maternal neutralizing antibody inhibition for certain subvariants. Maternal blood from infants with lower birth weights demonstrated better neutralizing antibody inhibition for certain subvariants.
