In recent years nanotechnology has revolutionized the healthcare strategies and envisioned to have a tremendous impact to offer better health facilities. In this context, medical nanotechnology involves design, fabrication, regulation, and application of therapeutic drugs and devices having a size in nano-range (1-100 nm). Owing to the revolutionary implications in drug delivery and gene therapy, nanotherapeutics has gained increasing research interest in the current medical sector of the modern world. The areas which anticipate benefits from nano-based drug delivery systems are cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, blood disorders and orthopedic problems. The development of nanotherapeutics with multi-functionalities has considerable potential to fill the lacunae existing in the present therapeutic domain. Nanomedicines in the field of cancer management have enhanced permeability and retention of drugs thereby effectively targeting the affected tissues. Polymeric conjugates of asparaginase, polymeric micelles of paclitaxel have been recmended for various types of cancer treatment. The advancement of nano therapeutics and diagnostics can provide the improved effectiveness of the drug with less or no toxicity concerns. Similarly, diagnostic imaging is having potential future applications with newer imaging elements at nano level. The newly emerging field of nanorobotics can provide new directions in the field of healthcare. In this article, an attempt has been made to highlight the novel nanotherapeutic potentialities of polymeric nanoparticles, nanoemulsion, solid lipid nanoparticle, nanostructured lipid carriers, dendrimers, nanocapsules and nanosponges based approaches. The useful applications of these nano-medicines in the field of cancer, nutrition, and health have been discussed in details. Regulatory and safety concerns along with the commercial status of nanosystems have also been presented. In summary, a successful translation of emerging nanotherapeutics into commercial products may lead to an expansion of biomedical science. Towards the end of the review, future perspectives of this important field have been introduced briefly.

Magnetic nanomaterials as drug delivery vehicles and therapeutic constructs to treat cancer

Tayyaba Anjum, Nazim Hussain, Hafiz M. N. Iqbal, Artur Jedrzak, Teofil Jesionowski, Muhammad Bilal, Muhammad Bilal

Summary: Anticancer drugs have been produced using heterocyclic compounds, but there is a need for inexpensive and less toxic nanocatalysts for the formation of these compounds. Nanotechnology and nano-medicine provide personalized medicine and new medical technologies. Magnetic nanoparticles have been developed for the manufacturing of heterocyclic compounds for cancer treatment. They can act as diagnostic and therapeutic agents, offering less toxicity and better targeting in therapies such as chemotherapy and thermotherapy.

Summary: Newly emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 continuously pose global public health concerns and can lead to waves of COVID-19 pandemic. These variants can spread quickly across countries, cause severe disease and reduce the efficacy of current vaccines and immunotherapies. The Omicron variant, first identified in South Africa, is currently the only variant of interest. This review provides an overview of SARS-CoV-2 variants, with a focus on the Omicron variant, its lineages, and hybrid variants. The challenges and strategies to counter the Omicron variant amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are also discussed.

Pathological and molecular identification of Mycobacterium avium infection in a loft of domestic pigeons (Columba livia var. domestica) from India

Asok Kumar Mariappan, Karikalan Mathesh, Sankar Muthu, Mukesh Bhatt, Megha Sharma, G. Saikumar, Kuldeep Dhama

Summary: This study reports the pathological and molecular identification of Mycobacterium avium causing avian mycobacteriosis in domestic pigeons. Ten adult racing pigeons out of 30 showed severe chronic and debilitating disease followed by death. Clinical signs included chronic emaciation, dullness, ruffled feathers, lameness, and greenish, watery diarrhea. Post-mortem examination revealed multifocal granulomatous lesions in various organs, and PCR analysis confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium avium infection. This is the first detailed report of avian mycobacteriosis in pigeons from India, highlighting the need for strict surveillance to prevent potential zoonotic infections in humans.

Hydrothermally improved natural manganese-containing catalytic materials to degrade 4-chlorophenol

Sobhan Ghanbari, Ali Fatehizadeh, Afshin Ebrahimi, Bijan Bina, Ensiyeh Taheri, Hafiz M. N. Iqbal

Summary: In this study, natural manganese-containing mineral (NMM) was used as a catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation. The catalytic activity of NMM and H-NMM, which were modified by hydro-thermal aging process, was evaluated for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The synergistic effect of NMM and H-NMM in the ozonation process showed promising potential for mitigating environmentally related pollutants.

Flavonoids and ischemic stroke-induced neuroinflammation: Focus on the glial cells

Weizhuo Lu, Zhiwu Chen, Jiyue Wen

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a common and serious disease, and neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in its progression. Microglia, astrocytes, and infiltrating immune cells are involved in the complicated neuroinflammation cascade, releasing different molecules that affect inflammation. Flavonoids, plant-specific compounds, have shown protective effects against cerebral ischemia injury by modulating the inflammatory responses.
