Improving Performance in Complex Surroundings: A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Two Hospital Strategies in the Netherlands

Erik Wackers, Simone van Dulmen, Bart Berden, Jan Kremer, Niek Stadhouders, Patrick Jeurissen

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of two Dutch hospitals' strategies aimed at increasing healthcare quality and reducing costs. The findings showed that both strategies led to a decrease in the volume of care provided by the hospitals, while maintaining the quality of care. However, one hospital failed to sufficiently reduce operating costs, resulting in declining profit margins. Overall, these strategies have shifted the focus of hospitals from production to quality-driven care.
