Summary: Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is a global problem with unknown molecular drivers. A study found that 67.8% of participants, mostly with mild infections, reported PASC, with symptoms including fatigue, dyspnea, and concentration deficit. These symptoms persisted in 60% of participants over an average 8-month follow-up period. PASC was associated with elevated plasma levels of IL-18, IL-6, and TNF.

Zingerone inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in THP-1 macrophages. It also enhanced autophagosome formation and reduced the intracellular survival of A. actinomycetemcomitans. These findings suggest that zingerone has potential as a treatment for periodontal inflammation.

Summary: The tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in breast cancer development. This study successfully encapsulated mifepristone and curcumin into hyaluronic acid-modified liposomes, which showed stronger anti-proliferation and anti-migration effects compared to other groups. The in vivo results demonstrated that mice treated with these liposomes had smaller tumor volume, less angiogenesis, lower extracellular matrix deposition, and weaker lung metastasis. These findings suggest that combination therapy using hyaluronic acid-modified liposomes may be an effective approach for treating breast cancer.

Summary: This research study found that in depressed patients without coexisting inflammatory diseases, the gene expression levels of specific immune-inflammatory factors such as IL-17, IL-21, IL-23, and IL-35 were higher, while Foxp3 expression was lower. The duration of the disease appears to be more important than the severity of depression in relation to the expression of these genes. These findings suggest that specific inflammatory genes may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of depressive disorders.

Summary: The accumulation of all-trans-retinal (atRAL) has been proposed as a pathogenic factor in Stargardt disease type 1 (STGD1) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study showed that atRAL induced complement activation through the alternative pathway in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, and led to the production of interleukin-1 beta. Inhibition of p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathways ameliorated complement activation in RPE cells, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for macular degeneration.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the linear correlation between IL-1ra and IL-6 in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their relationship with disease's inflammatory activity. IL-6 and IL-1ra levels were measured in 407 RA patients. No correlation was found between serum levels of IL-6 and IL-1ra. However, both cytokines were positively associated with disease activity and acute phase reactants. After controlling for covariates, disease activity scores were more strongly associated with IL-1ra compared to IL-6.

Summary: Mood disorders caused by chemotherapy have become more important as cancer patients' survival increases. This study used methotrexate to induce mood disorders in rats and found that treatment with the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can alleviate anxiety and depression-like behaviors, increase antioxidant capacity, reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory response, and regulate brain chemistry. The findings suggest that NAC treatment could be an effective strategy in revising the treatment for individuals suffering from chemotherapy-induced mood disorders.

Summary: Food deprivation can lead to neurological dysfunctions, including memory impairment. This study used Aplysia as an animal model to investigate the memory deficits caused by prolonged food deprivation. The results showed that 14 days of food deprivation decreased the level of 5-HT in the hemolymph, which contributed to the lack of sensitization and its cellular correlates. However, exogenous application of 5-HT partially induced sensitization in the food deprived animals.

By screening CatWalk XT gait parameters and using exploratory factor analysis, 38 suitable parameters for assessing motor function were identified. A reliable Coordinated Function Index (CFI) was proposed based on these parameters and simplified for improved assessment efficacy.
