Summary: This study applied machine learning to predict the metastasis of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) lymph nodes in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Models were established using baseline and pathological features of 3352 surgically treated ESCC patients, achieving high negative predictive values and suggesting potential intraoperative applications to spare RLN node dissection.

Summary: EBUS is an efficient tool for RLN node evaluation, with superior diagnostic performance compared to CT. Specifically, EBUS of the L-RLN nodes showed the best sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy. Additionally, combining EBUS with CT increased the NPV, particularly in early-T-stage ESCC.

Summary: Photothermal therapy has been established as an effective non-invasive treatment for cancer metastatic lymph nodes, but the monitoring and reporting of treatment progress still need to be explored. In this study, pegylated gold nanorods were delivered via the lymphatic route and combined with laser irradiation, resulting in a time-dependent reduction in tumour activity and statistically significant treatment response even after conclusion. This non-invasive technique could offer more insights into tumour therapy dynamics through lymphatic administration in preclinical studies.

Summary: Recent technological advances in thyroid surgery have led to the development and use of energy-based devices (EBDs), which offer advantages such as reduced blood loss, lower incidence of post-operative hypocalcemia, and shorter operation times. However, there is a risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury during EBD use due to high temperatures generated by the devices. It is important for surgeons to maintain safe distances and adhere to proper cooling times to prevent inadvertent thermal injuries to the RLN.

Summary: This study evaluated multimodal predictive factors of LN-prRLN metastasis in PTC patients, including clinical data, pathological data, and preoperative sonographic characteristics. The results showed that CEUS centripetal perfusion pattern, central LN detected by ultrasound, and LN-arRLN metastasis were independent characteristics for predicting LN-prRLN metastasis in PTC patients.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) lymph node (LN) dissection on the survival and postoperative complications in patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The results showed that both the unilateral RLN-LN dissection plus standard two-field lymphadenectomy (U-2FL) and total two-field lymphadenectomy (T-2FL) groups had significantly better outcomes compared with the standard two-field lymphadenectomy (S-2FL) group. Adequacy of RLN-LN dissection is an important prognosticator for improved overall survival and recurrence-free survival in patients with thoracic ESCC.

Summary: We compared the prognosis after lung cancer surgery between 104 patients with ILD and 104 patients without ILD who were matched by key variables. The findings showed that patients with ILD had worse survival rates, especially those with concomitant IPF or high physiological severity of ILD. Evaluating the underlying ILD before surgery is considered helpful in predicting the prognosis after lung cancer surgery.

Summary: The study aimed to validate the effectiveness of the IASLC grading system in Korean patients and propose a modification to improve its predictive ability, especially for grade 2 patients. By reviewing the histopathologic characteristics of 1358 patients with invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the validity of the revised model (Lepidic-10) was evaluated and compared to the IASLC system. The results showed that the Lepidic-10 model had better performance in predicting survival and recurrence time in patients from two hospitals compared to the IASLC grading.

Summary: This study found that exposing patients to virtual reality (VR) prior to endoscopic procedures can reduce their anxiety levels, leading to less discomfort and incomplete procedures, as well as decreased use of sedative medication. The proportion of patients with high anxiety significantly decreased in the VR group compared to the control group, and patients in the VR group reported higher satisfaction with sedation.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the current mHealth apps that improve brace-wearing compliance by assessing their quality and functionalities. Ten apps were identified from literature review and commercial app markets. The apps were evaluated based on transparency, health content, technical content, security/privacy, usability issues, and subjective ratings. The overall quality of the apps was moderate, with none reaching a high or excellent quality. The transparency section had the highest rating, while the security/privacy section had the lowest rating. There is a need for developing high-quality apps with appropriate functionalities to support brace treatment for patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

Summary: Significant translational research advances have been made in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) research field in recent years. Endoscopic evaluation is a reasonable option for acquiring upper GI tissue for research purposes with minimal risk. The optimal number of biopsy samples and sample storage is crucial and might influence results. Few reports have been published on methods for sample collection from endoscopic biopsies. This review provides a protocol for collecting study samples for upper GI research, including microbiome, DNA, RNA, protein, single-cell RNA sequencing, and organoid culture, through a comprehensive literature review. Different methods and sample sizes are recommended for different types of analysis.
