We don't need no fancy hedges! Or do we?

Summary: Hedging decisions in the real world often contradict the literature. We found that minimizing a downside risk criterion leads to consistently better outcomes for hedgers than variance minimization (MV), especially in scenarios corresponding to strong upward or downward price movements.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the prediction of seizure freedom after epilepsy surgery by using more complex models, recruiting larger sample sizes, and using data-driven selection of clinical predictors. The study also conducted the first external validation of a machine learning model in this area. The results showed that model performance was influenced by sample size and predictor selection. Therefore, improving feature selection, collaboration, data standardization, and model sharing are necessary to advance the field.

Scoping Review on Platelets and Tumor Angiogenesis: Do We Need More Evidence or Better Analysis?

Summary: Platelets play an important role in the tumor microenvironment and are closely related to angiogenesis. Although there is abundant evidence supporting their involvement in tumor angiogenesis, it remains unclear whether the number, volume, content, and localization of platelets have clinical relevance. More molecular and quantitative data are needed to translate the findings from preclinical studies into the clinical setting, and to correlate platelet biology with angiogenesis for personalized cancer therapy and clinical prognosis.

How much data do we need to estimate computational models of decision-making? The COMPASS toolbox

Summary: The standard approach of carrying out a goodness-of-recovery study to determine the amount of data needed for useful parameter estimations from a computational model may not always be optimal. This paper proposes a novel approach using a generalized concept of statistical power and a Python-based toolbox to determine the required data size for parameter estimates. Simulations indicate that a high number of trials per person is necessary for high-powered studies in a specific computational model.

Logistic regression models for patient-level prediction based on massive observational data: Do we need all data?

Stock market volatility forecasting: Do we need high-frequency data?

Summary: Research suggests that high-frequency volatility models outperform low-frequency volatility models in short-term forecasts, but as the forecast horizon increases, the difference in forecast accuracy becomes statistically indistinguishable for most market indices. In asset allocation, asset allocation based on high-frequency volatility model forecasts does not outperform asset allocation based on low-frequency volatility model forecasts.

Do we need soft cosmology?

Summary: This study examines the possibility of soft cosmology, with small deviations from the usual framework due to the effective appearance of soft-matter properties in the Universe sectors. It is suggested that dark energy may exhibit a different equation-of-state parameter at large scales and at intermediate scales. The proposal of a novel parametrization with the introduction of softness parameters for the dark sectors aims to improve clustering behavior and alleviate tensions. Additionally, an extension of cosmological perturbation theory and detailed statistical mechanical analysis would provide robust arguments in favor of soft cosmology.

Wireless Distributed Edge Learning: How Many Edge Devices Do We Need?

Summary: The study focuses on distributed machine learning at the wireless edge, aiming to minimize average completion time by optimizing the tradeoff between computation and communication. It provides upper and lower bounds for the number of edge devices needed, and establishes necessary conditions for adding these devices in different asymptotic regimes. Conducted experiments and numerical results support the claim that the number of edge devices should be carefully selected for timely distributed edge learning.

Summary: The study found that methods quantifying large chromosomal alterations like the HRD score and HRDetect, capturing a wider range of HRD-induced genomic aberrations, are equally effective in identifying HRD ovarian cancer cases. Additionally, HRDetect trained on ovarian cancer data was more accurate than HRDetect trained on breast cancer data.

This research sheds light on the close connection between the gut microbiome and individual health, providing a basis for targeted studies on perturbation of specific metabolites and identification of potential plasma biomarkers.

Summary: This study investigated a melanoma patient resistant to anti-PD-1 treatment and found consecutive acquisition of B2M loss and impaired JAK1 signaling, leading to immune escape of tumor cells. These findings shed light on the complexity of acquired resistance to immunotherapy and suggest that coexisting altered pathways can result in pan T-cell immune escape.

RB1 loss overrides PARP inhibitor sensitivity driven by RNASEH2B loss in prostate cancer

Summary: Current targeted cancer therapies overlook concurrent genomic alterations and mainly focus on single gene mutations. This study finds that RNASEH2B, RB1, and BRCA2 genes on chromosome 13q are frequently deleted in prostate cancer. Loss of RNASEH2B sensitizes cancer cells to PARP inhibition, but co-deletion with RB1 reduces this sensitivity. Notably, loss of BRCA2 resensitizes cells to PARP inhibition in RNASEH2B/RB1 co-deleted cells.
